I was actually thinking of starting this based on the last few posts in the joke thread, then someone said something.

So i bring you, the beer thread.

Discuss favorite beers, drinks involving beer, new beers you tried or want to try, get opinions on beer. as long as it involves the wonderful beverage we call beer discuss it here

-Darth Simon

p.s. I said beer, so no coors light, bud light, micholobe light or any of those other alcoholic waters unless your discussing how they're not really beer, thats ok

da-na-na-na na-nah, BEER!

Good thread. At any given time, the beer in my fridge is a hodge-podge of Budweiser, Guinness, and Heinekin. My favorite though is called Yuengling (brewed in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, USA)

I usually drink Guinness, but will drink just about whatever's available as long as it's real beer - not piss-water.

The most disappointing beer I ever had was sitting at an outdoor table with a buddy outside a train station in Spain. We hadn't had a local beer, so we ordered dos cervezas (sp?), and dammit, she brought us Budweiser! Suck!

The best beer, however, was at some proletariat bar in Prague (different trip from above) that I'll never find again, even if I spend another month in Prague - the place was a dive. I'm sure part of the reason I remember it as being so good was the edgy wondering if we were goin to get our American college butts stomped by some big Czech factory workers. But, the beer was truly outstanding, and at $0.25 a pint, you could get pretty rocked for only a couple of bucks.

Beer joke:
At a brewers' convention, several reps are taking a break in the bar of the hotel. When asked what kind of beverage he would like, the Anheuser-Busch rep says, "Why Bud, of course." The Corona rep asks for a Corona (obviously), and the Taiwanese rep asks for a Tsingtao. When the bartender gets to the Canadian rep, he responds, "I'll have a Coke." "Coke?" responds the bartender, "Aren't you drinking beer?"
"Why should I?" responds the Canadian rep, "Nobody else is."

I'm going to take moment to defend Budweiser. Sure, there are plenty of better beers out there, but Bud is not without its charms. It's palatable without being over-powering, while still being 5%, and it treats you nice the next day. Also, I've received everything from merchandise to free beer from them just for being a loyal consumer. I'll gladly except their gratitude.

Lastly, as someone mentioned above, for good or ill, you can go virtually ANYWHERE in the world, and they will have a Bud. You could go to some dive in Myanmar, and they will have Budweiser.

Okay, end of Jimbo-esque rant.

And just how did you register as a "frequent consumer"? I'd like to do that with Guinness or Killians.

Bossk, you've got good taste.

Perhaps my favorite beer is called Dragoon. There is one bar in Florence, Italy that had it, and that is the only place in the world I have been able to find it. Very stout. Very tasty.

Otherwise, Anchor Porter (brother to Anchor Steam), Lowenbrau, Guinness, Smithwick's, John Courage, Kirin... gosh, I guess I just like beer in general. It's good to be Irish

If you're ever in San Diego, make your way to Bottom Up or Pizza Port and try the Shark Bite Red. And go to BJ's Pizzeria and try their Hefeweizen. Spectacular.
If you're going to take forever, then I'm having a hotdog!

You'd think all beer would have twistie-tops, but NOOOO... you have to use those infernal bottle openers on all the stupid caps that are non-consumer-friendly. IMHO.

I've gotta try this Yuenglings and Smithwicks. It's getting pretty rave reviews here. Gotta find them first. My local Dominick's (grocery store) allows you to build custom six packs from a limited selection of single bottles. Maybe they'll have both of these available. It's worth a shot anyway.

Starboy, thanks! I appreciate it. Kirin is pretty good, too, although I've only had it once. My wife has really good taste in beer and she's willing to try just about any new beer she can get her hands on. Her family is very pro-beer so she's grown up around it. It's a very positive character trait.

I'm only a very little bit Irish, but any little bit helps, right? I'm mostly German (the only nationality that comes from both sides of my family). Both have a great beer heritage.

I live in Rockford. I know about Yuengling because I went to school on the east coast, where it is readily available. I've tried some specialty places around here but they haven't even heard of it.

Nope, no luck. And with regard to Smithwicks... apparently, that is only available stateside in kegs. Not an investment I'm willing to make at the moment.
