update: I just ordered a new video card, an XFX nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT. Looks like my Ti4600 is just about shot, as I can't even play a simple video file without my system crashing on me. I'm borrowing a friend's old 7500 in the mean time, though I may not get much work done on my capturing until the new card arrives.

Looks like it's time to work on the menu a bit more....

It is that.

Thanks Zion,

excuse my ignorance,

I understand the connectivity issues of the composite cable running 'from' your LD Player, but can you explain how it runs 'into' your computer?

Thanks again Zion,

I think I will need to buy some extra hardware for my computer (as in the pic you provided).
As is I have a firewire capture port (which I use for my DV tapes), but nothing for composite.

Best,

GPK.

"Pretty easy, no?"

LOL. Nice modem you've got there. (hee hee )

"As is I have a firewire capture port (which I use for my DV tapes), but nothing for composite."

Yeah, you don't want to use your camcorder as a capture device for the LDs. It will work, but you get much better quality from a real capture board (although using firewire to download your digital tapes is fine, because there's no conversion going on.)

This may not be the best place to post this message... Please direct me to a post that answers this question if it has already been answered.

If the aim is to preserve the original theatrical versions and not the original ld versions, can't you use the additional video quality/information provided in the new DVD set and add your filters/effects to make the video look more like the original. Doesn't that give you more room to work with? (in terms of color correction?)

Would integrating the old with new be too jarring a viewing experience (even if you make the new DVD video look "worse")?

In a nutshell, the general consensus is that it would be too jarring to edit the two versions together because of the large difference in video quality. Also, the audio mix between the two is different as well which creates more problems.

But has it been tried? attempted? Couldn't you use whichever audio source you wanted for the most part and match that as well? (I mean going from the better to the "worse")

Please go to this thread. Some forum members are attempting this, but in my opinion it's going to look aweful unless they dumb down the DVD video to look like the LD. But if they do that, what's the point?

Anyway, seems like a lot's happened since the last time I checked in to the board. I'm not leaving for good, I just needed a few days to cool off. I have a new capture coming and I will post screenshots when I have time to finish it.

Zion - few things.

first, glad you are back on the board. must admit the last few days left a bit of a taste in my mouth too. anyway, glad you're back.

second. some new screenies on there way to you if you could be so kind as to include them on the official screenshots thread that would be great.

third, if you've got mebe's e-mail could you PM me please. I talked to him a lot via PM but we never exchanged e-mail cos I thought we'd use the board. ah well.

I haven't really had a chance work on my project lately. I've been working 10-12 hour days 7 days a week for a couple weeks now. Looks like I'll be working like this for another week too.

I really wanted to have ANH done by Christmas. This probably isn't goint to happen, but I'll probably have some kind of test disc up on myspleen around new year's.

Yeah I've tried it, and for some scenes it kinda works OK, others it is just far too awful.
The audio is another problem altogether, whole chunks of the movie were re-scored to take the timing
differences and new scenes into account, and that is a real problem.

After doing some tests and seeing some of mebejedi's stuff, I am hopeful that we can make a 'less special' edition out of the DVD that will remove a lot of the really awful changes by:
1) Rotoscoping and painting out offending bits using the DVD as the main source
2) Cutting LD footage in where it might work (i.e. really short scenes with fast cuts
3) Getting pieces of frames from the SE SDTV German release an painting those into scenes.
4) Hopefully restoring some sequences or at least frames from film reels from 77 and the 97SE releases.

This will get us close to something that looks a lot more like the OT but you'll never turn it back into the complete OT by jamming bits form the LD release on there, the quality difference is just too great in many scenes.

Well I'm finally back to work on this again. The last month has been very hectic for me and I haven't had much time outside of work to do anything but sleep. Now that things are starting to get back to normal, I can once again concentrate on my project. This time around the capture looks cleaner with my new equipment, but I'm still tinkering with the filters since I've implemented some new ones. Here is my latest workflow:

* Capture all three ANH laserdiscs (I'm doing the first 7 min or so after the crawl at this point). Import simple crop script into VirtualDubMod for IVTC and DotCrawl. Save new avi.
* Combine all three using the TooT script. Import into VDubMod for MSU sharpen filter. Save new avi.
* Run through Laserschwert's De-Jaggy/De-Ghost script (also resizing to anamorphic) and import to VDubMod for MSU sharpen and denoiser filters. Save new avi.
* Color correct in Premiere.

This should turn out quite well. The other thing I've done this time around is use that PCI hack program I mentioned earlier to change the capture settings. This allowed me to disable the clipping on the sides and capture the full width of the video. Additionally, I used VirtualVCR's histogram to set the brightness/contrast levels instead of eyeballing it.

Screencaps should be up tomarrow if all goes as planned.
