Anyone see Hellboy?

When I saw the trailers I was like "hoo boy, they just keep pumping them out." I had zero interest.

But then my roommate got it and was watching it one night, and once I sat down I was doomed. It was shockingly good, and not just for entertainment, but for quality. Maybe this discussion happened long ago, but it just happened to me.

Anyone else have the same experience?

I don't read many comic books, so I never knew about Hellboy until the movie came out. There have been some good comic book movies and I like Gulermo del Toro, so I went and saw the movie. I thought it was very well written and great visually with some good action set pieces. Ron Pearlman, a good actor in other things I've seen, delivers a performance that is on the level of performances of actors getting end of the year kudos, like Jamie Foxx in Ray.

Well, as much as I enjoyed Hellboy, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in Hell (pardon the pun) of Perlman winding up on the Academy's nomination list.

I agree. He did an astounding job, but not oscar worthy. And even if it was oscar worthy, I don't think the academy could ever choke down giving an award to a "fantasy" character. Sheesh. Literati.

Well, obviously the Academy will not give an Oscar nomination to someone playing a red-colored super hero just like they would not give to one to a Hobbit. I'm saying that it is a great performance that goes beyond just looking right for the part and doing action sequences. He does both of those well, but he also does the emotional scenes better than a comic movie called Hellboy usually calls for.

True, but to a comic book movie? No matter how great it was, I don't think its time yet.

No. McKellan was nominated, but did not win.

I would have to agree on the "too many" part. The third film wasn't even the one that deserved the nominations. It should have been the first one. And people, don't go saying that the awards were given for the whole series. Yes, that is what happened. But that is not what should have happened. The movie nominated was the third movie, not the series. If you want to recognize an entire series, that's what Special Achievement awards are for.

Hellboy was cool. Not award-worthy cool, but cool all the same. And I proudly display my Hellboy action figure at work.

Return of the King is the only fantasy movie to ever win an Oscar in one of the top categories. They give the technical awards to fantasy/action/science fiction all the time. Terminator 2, Matrix, and Jurassic Park all won multiple awards in categories like special effects and sound. Going into last year's Oscar, it was obvious that Return of the King was going to win Picture and Director, but winning Adapted Screenplay was what shocked me. And yes, Fellowship should have won Picture instead of Return, especially since I consider Beautiful Mind(which beat Fellowship) to be trash and thought Mystic River(which lost to Return) to be great.
The Academy and other critics don't consider acting in fantasy, action, or comedy to be as important as drama. Some of that acting requires very little(Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme having careers is proof of that). However, there are great performances in those categroies that are every bit as good as the dramatic work the Academy and critics praise. They only nominated Ian McKellan(for Fellowship) out of the Lord of the Rings series while I think many of those actors, with a few exceptions, gave the performances of their careers and there should have been multiple acting nominations for each of those films. Same goes for Star Wars. Alec Guiness was nominated, but Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford also deserved nominations for the first two films. That was all I was saying about Ron Pearlman in Hellboy. He gave a performance that I think was better than just about any other actor could manage in that movie. If they gave the part to DeNiro, I think he may not have given as good a performance as Pearlman. That is what I meant by a performance on the level of performances of actors getting year end kudos.

There's no question that Perlman pulled off Hellboy beyond the ability of just about anybody I could imagine in that role. He was spectacular in bringing that big red lunkhead to life.

I also think more actors from throughout the LOTR series should have been nominated for acting awards. I think Sean Astin should have received a supporting nod for ROTK, maybe Elijah Wood for ROTK (although I think Astin was better) or TTT, etc.

But I've gotta say that I did like the casting of Faramir in TTT/ROTK unlike somebody in another thread stated.

Mystic River was far superior to ROTK and should have taken the award. Even Lost in Translation should have been given the nod over ROTK. But hey, that's what these damn awards are all about, isn't it? Opinions.

and if it was for the entire series that they wanted to give oscars, they should have waited until ROTK, not give FOTR some right away...

The rules stipulate that awards can be given only for a film released during that year of eligibility and only ROTK was released during last year. And the nomination forms read "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" not "Lord of the Rings: The Whole Damn Series". So Academy voters should have looked at that film only. Like I said, if they want to give something because of the achievements of the whole series, give them some new Special Achievement award.
