Not at all. Nor do I want to change the ending so that somehow Luke is victorious.

Good for you...other people like to think beyond the films. I don't understand why you consider this a bad thing.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

I'm intrigued by the idea of Star Wars Infinities. It's always interesting to think what could have been. The biggest preditability in film is that the good guy wins.

Hi All,

I proudly bought the 2004 DVD's, I pretty much can except most of the changes except:

1) Greedo should have never even gotten a shot off.
2) The new Sarlakk (sp?).
3) Haydens ghost - The explaination makes sense, but it's inconsistant because Luke's reaction is a look of fimiliarity. Luke has never seen young Anakin, therefore the change does not make sense.

I can even pretty much defend the PT, but not the above changes.

I was just at Best Buy, and saw the DVDs on the stand.

ANd boy, I was tempted. I saw them beign played on their big screen TV and just..... stared. I stared at the incredible picture! Fabulous!
I picked up the set. I set it back down. I picked it back up, I set it back down. I picked it back up, carried it around a bit, then put it back down.

I swear if it wasn't for me SHEER LACK of fifty dollars... I might have caved in.
But remembering that GOD AWFUL GHOST DECAPITATION, I am so glad I didn't.

Besides, are Rikter and MebeJedi and MagnoliaFan not planning on an edited version of the DVDs with no changes? I say wait for this.

Surely *that* would be worthy of causign me to shit my pants.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Hal, you did exactly what I did at Best Buy on 22 September. I was coming home for a four-day weekend from school, and when I stopped at Best Buy, they had the huge Star Wars display and were playing ESB on the large widescreen TV with the couch and the surround speakers. I sat down, box set in my hand, watching the asteroid chase, stood back up walked over to the sci-fi/fantasy section, took a look at the Fellowship of the Ring Extended, went back over the the TV, watched the Vader/Palpatine scene, and then walked back over to the Star Wars display. The sound and picture quality was so good! And the set was $42.99 on sale! And I had the money! And if I waited, and decided to buy it another time, I would have to pay $51.99, and I knew I didn't want to do that! Long story short, I bought the trilogy, but I also have Rikter's bootlegs, so it's not like I'm allowing myself to be brainwashed by the new versions. I mean, everytime a change comes on the screen, I playback the original in my head. I despair, but yet I don't think the new versions are complete sh*t...the only reason they are such a travesty to purists such as ourselves is that the originals aren't being preserved.

Yes, Hal...you are stronger than me in resisting in the temptation, but...Dolby 5.1 EX!! That's all I have to say...

Before I bought the DVD set, the only copy of Star Wars I had, was the SE of ANH, which was taped off a television broadcast. I also had the OT of ANH, which was taped, and cut off from the tape limit right as the battle of Yavin started.

I had only seen the OT of empire and jedi, once beforehand. On rental VHS tapes. They had the interviews in the front.

It wasn't until I bought that DVDs that I saw the SE changes to them.

But in terms of quality, the film looks like it was made yesterday.

And I find that 90% of the changes, I can live with, as they don't affect the plot, or pacing.

it's just that last 10% that are not needed (Jabba in ANH, Greedo, Hayden) and can ruin it for most people.

I completely agree with you, and welcome to the boards, Skyman!

It's called Star Wars Infinities, and the story begins at the end of A New Hope, with Luke missing the exhaust port of the Death Star!!!

There's a similar story for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Anybody have read those? Are they any good?

I have all 3 Infinities. ANH is by far the best, telling a complete and engaging story. While interesting, ESB and RotJ are nothing more than entertaining 'what-ifs?'.

I agree, the ESB and ROTJ infinities just feel like they're missing something(although they both round out the story by the end). I think it was really creative of them just to change the story so that Han's tauntaun had died before he reached luke that the whole saga will be changed though.

Anyone know if the 4th Bonus dvd disc from the '04 set will become available to buy seperately?

Most bonus discs from any sets never come sold seperately. That's the whole point of packaging them with a set, you use them as a marketing tool to get more people to buy the set.

Considering you get two more discs for only about $5 more (during first week of sales), it is also the reason why I've been buying the extended editions of the LOTR trilogy as opposed to the theatrical editions.

I've bought both versions of each movie...I thought I could live without the Extended Editions, but I finally realized that I'm too big of a fan to not have the extra footage (and while the bonus features are immense and amazing, the only reason I bought the Extended Editions was because of all of the new scenes). Which reminds me, I need to preorder ROTK so it'll be waiting for me when I get home for Christmas break (would buy it the day it comes out, but I won't have time to watch it, so what's the point? And besides, I'll have take a road trip to get it since my college is in an isolated town of 3,000).

Saw ANH on dvd yesterday (no, I didn't buy them) - was surprised to see CGI blocks surrounding the TIE-Fighters when persuing the Millennium Falcon after it's escape from the DeathStar.

Very shoddy work, not to mention the more obvious sabre colour changes, space laser colour changes etc

Actually, those are the original matte blocks, meaning original footage of the models and not CG. What bugged me is that these had not been erased with CG. If the THX optimizer is run on the TV, these do go away. That's no excuse, though.

Doh - my bad, m8

Still shoddy, though. One of the mates I was watching it with was teasing me a little for noticing some shoody work prior to that - even he went quiet and couldn't believe that it wasn't caught.

What's a THX Optmizer?

There is a TV setup on each Star Wars DVD that has you set the color contrast brightness tint and other various settings, after this is done correctly you should not see the matte boxes.

There is a special menu on the disc that (among other things) helps you calibrate your TV's settings for color, contrast and sharpness. As I've learned from the boards, this is actually different for every movie, as opposed to making the friggin' DVD adhere to a particular spec (you know, so you'd have to set up your TV once and not have to screw with it every time for every movie).

Anyway, when I ran the optimizer, the matte blocks disappeared on my TV.

But Luke's saber is still green and the title card still recedes to quickly and the music is still reversed in the rear channels, so until these issues get properly, I'm going to remain a noisy cricket in Lucasfilm's ear.
