Cassette Tape Conversion

Is there a way that I can convert my old cassette tapes using the headphone output of just a regular boom box or walkman and the mic line-in on my computer?

Yes there is, however, you don't want to use the Mic In. You want to use the Line In.

All you need is a cord with 2 3.5mm ends on it.

I've used a Sony Walkman, one of these cords and a program called Audicity to transfer a couple things off tape, plus I was also able to record off the radio with the same setup.

Where could I get a cord like that? Radio shack?

Radio Shack, yes.

If you have an old set of computer speakers anywhere, they might have used that dual-end cord.
(1 Speaker plugs into the computer, then the second speaker plugs into the first).

My dad had a boatload of them where he worked (speakers getting thrown away), and he brought a couple home for me to use. One is on my computer, the other I use for the Aux In on my car stereo (I can plug my PDA in).

I think I might just have one of those now that you mention it, thanks for the help.

I said 3.5mm before, to make sure I don't confuse you, I meant the standard side jack for headphones.

Looking at the Radio Shack site, it appears its actually 1/8 inch (which could be 3.5mm, I don't know) but like I said, I don't want to confuse you.

Yeah, I knew what you meant. I've already gone out, bought it, and got it up and recording.

Sweet. Got anything good?

I'm still trying to fiddle with it, setting the silence level and stuff to get the best capture. But so far I've converted about an hour or so of books on tape, its gonna take a while.
