What if TFA is awful? — Page 10

If it's awful, then there will be a funny Red Letter Media review to ease the pain.

Author

I don't think you have to worry about it being awful like the prequels; however, it's very likely that it will be a forgettable movie. The real angst will be to watch a contained story devolve into "what cool characters and plot can we think up next?" serial of the week. The difference is the same as that between a symphony and a pop concert.

What like Flash Gordon?

Yeah. You know, like everything George Lucas wanted Star Wars to be in the 70s. Only thank god constraints like time, money, and other people's better ideas got in the way.

You saw what George Lucas's unfettered version of Star Wars was. You did watch the prequels right?

WHAT IF TFA TRAILER IS AWFUL

I thought it was good.

I think I liked the last trailer as well.

You're full of surprises aren't you?

I wish he were full of more surprises. It'd make his posts more tolerable.

I certainly hope not. Although, the prequels have even managed to have some memorable moments, despite them not being the most fond amongst the majority. Many people remember podracing, the lava planet, the clones, Darth Maul's fight scene, etc. I'm sure there will be things to remember in TFA. I already have the image of Kylo igniting his lightsaber in the forest and the crashed Star Destroyer stuck in my memory, and those were just from the trailers.

Which of the two Star Destroyers? The one with its conning tower above the sands or the upside down larger one with the conning tower deeply buried inside the sand....? ;-)

The latter one is one of the most striking visuals linking back to the Original Trilogy, IMHO.

Lucas on the colorization of the THREE STOOGES in 2004: "Maybe just the fact that they're in black and white makes it funny, because their humor is dated. But by putting it in black and white, it puts it in a context where you can appreciate it for what it was.Lucas on film preservation before Congress in 1988: "The public's interest is ultimately dominant over all other interests."

We follow standard imperial procedure for infiltrating potentially hostile planets.

  1. First we send in the real nerds, the Forlorn hope, in a scouting mission.
  2. If they do not come back, we can assume they all fell asleep and the movie is awful
  3. If they do come back, we read and listen to their reports.
  4. If it is good, we go in full force.
  5. If it is bad, we spend the next twenty years sniping at George Lucas and J.J. Abrams from the rooftops and the forums.

I used to work with a guy whose last name was pronounced Forceborn. Yes, really.

The reason there’s no similar community trash-talking Paul McCartney’s albums (I agree, BTW), is that good-quality recordings of the Beatles that people love are widely available, so there’s no community of similarly frustrated Beatles fans to do it.

“Live and Let Die” by Wings was fantastic what are you talking about?

you used to say… Live and Let Live

you know you did, you know you did, you know you diiiieed

What about Rupert and the frog song anyone?

I think that decision is Corporal Hicks’. Since, you know, this is a Military operation.

The quality of TFA will affect the quality of Eps. 8-9 just like TPM’s badness dragged down AOTC and ROTS. You need a solid foundation to make a great trilogy.

What do you mean it dragged down AOTC? AOTC surpassed TPM in terms of badness. Anakin in AOTC even by far surpassed Jar Jar from TPM in terms of annoyance.

Pfft. Enlisted men can’t make decisions of that magnitude.

^ The word “Magnitude” in that sentence should always be spoken in Admiral Ackbar’s voice.

Oh I’m very pro-“Live and Let Die”. I like most of his 70s output well enough, it’s the 80s when things go off the rails for me.

Before TPM was released, people said that it couldn’t possibly be worse than ROTJ.

I don’t remember a single article, interview, or discussion stating anything like that. Do you have any links?

Don’t forget a new Rifftrax, thanks to them I can watch the PT and the holiday special without getting suicidal thoughts.

DV:Where is Padme?

“Does she have my legs?”

DV:Is she safe? Is she all right?

“Can I really go right in the suit?”

Back on topic, I think JJ knows most of the ways to not screw up from referencing the PT. A fine example would be the entire droid factory scene in Ep2. The second I see R2 fly or 3PO hanging by his fingers may be the point I just walk out on the movie. I should point out that after Ep1 I didn’t bother seeing the other 2 PT’s in the theater so I didn’t have the opportunity to walk out on that scene.

So, if the TFA is awful, I hope it’s soon enough that I can justify asking for a refund, and then hopefully we get new offerings from Rifftrax and RLM. Granted I would gladly exchange the latter offerings for a great movie that doesn’t deserve a Riffing or a Plinkett review, but getting burned the last 3 times doesn’t leave me a lot of hope though.

Asking me to accept the SE’s and prequels is like asking a Catholic to accept the Book of Mormon and the Quran.

I’ve talked to many people who were at least teenagers/young adults when TMP came out and no one had such discussions…

Still no one expected a Star Wars film to be not only bad, but a complete failure of a film.

I sure as hell did, after seeing the Desecrated Editions in the theater. I couldn’t even stomach RotJ😄E, and given that Lucas had managed to make my three favorite films unwatchable, I saw the writing on the wall as to Georgie-poo’s “vision”.
