Instead, we get many scenes of Alexander toasting to places he has conquered while not seeing him conquer them and many, many scenes of his troops rebelling against him. I learned virtually nothing of Alexander the man.
The first battle scene is a complete mess. It may be the worst directed battle scene I have ever seen. The second battle scene at least had some elephants to make it a little interesting. They should have dropped Anthony Hopkins' narration all together.
If Stone wanted to portray Alexander as homosexual or bisexual, that would be Stone's choice. However, Alexander seems to be bizarrly asexual. He didn't seem to be into Hephaistus even though Hephaistus was clearly into him. They may have had sex in the scenes after arriving at Babylon, but the movie didn't show whether Alexander wanted to or whether he just need a loyal friend. He only seemed to be interested in his wife to have an heir. At least we got to see Rosario Dawson's breasts. That was the best thing about the movie.
