Looks like a goofy outtake! Ahah

The "food" in the white void sequence looks an awful lot like this delicacy from my childhood...

But I don't know if they were on the market before 1972.

It seems like an obvious fan question that nobody ever asked the actors... What were they eating in those scenes?

The food in the script/shooting script is referred to as "foam rubber food" or "multi-colored foam rubber." There are other references but that's how it's described, without really telling what the food is. I think the audience is expected to assume it's some sort of dehydrated supplement or something—you know, future food, where edible rubber is the highlight. I imagine this is some kind of commentary on food quality in the 60s and 70s, where food was really becoming processed and manufactured.

Here is a interesting scene that describes its qualities:

               16. MAIN ROOM, THX'S QUARTERS

THX is laughing hysterically. As soon as he starts to
gain control of himself, he breaks out laughing again.

LUH has taken a spherical piece of food from her tray and
is bouncing it on the table. She is laughing, herself,
but still trying to keep control of the ball.

                                     THX
                              (laughing very hard)
                         Violation...violation...You're
                         bouncing in...violation..

This makes them laugh even harder and LUH loses the ball.
They both dive for it and wind up face to face under the
               table.

               Eventually, they stop laughing.

                                     THX
I've never been under the table
                         before.

                                     LUH
                              (pointing at the
                              underside of the
                              table)
                         Look,dirt!

                                     THX
                              (mocking)
                         That's not dirt...Can't be dirt..
                         Dirt is a violation.

                                     LUH
                         Looks like dirt.

THX picks up the red food ball and holds it up at LUH.

                                     THX
                         Look, food!

                                     LUH
That's not food. Can't be food.

                                     THX
                         Looks like food.

THX takes a bite out of it and grimaces.

                                     THX
                         Tastes like food.

He scrambles out from underneath the table and tosses it
in the product consumer. It disappears instantly.

                                     THX
                         Produced to be consumed!

LUH goes over to the table and scoops up the rest of the
               food.

She begins tossing it into the product consumer.

                                     THX
Hey! Wait a minute. Not all of
                         it. I'm hungry.

She begins to break out laughing, throwing the food into
the consumer as fast as she can. THX starts for her and
she begins throwing the food at him.

THX catches her by the foot and pulls her to the floor.
They roll around playfully, laughing hysterically all the
               time.

Slowly and subtly, their play becomes more violent and
sadistic, although they keep on laughing.

                                     LUH
                              (laughing)
                         The pain, no...the pain, I can't
                         stand it.

LUH turns on THX, pinning him to the floor. She sits
               astride him, holding his arms.

They are both out of breath and panting heavily, confused
by a slowly increasing awareness of each others sexuality.

LUH slowly releases THX's arms and sits up. She gives a
last, embarrassed giggle and then falls silent. They stare
               at each other.

What is interesting is the removal of this scene, particularly because it builds tension and explains their sudden romance with each other. While it is a good segway, removing it doesn't hurt the scene or the transition from roommates to lovers. And the humor itself feels ackward and out of place with the rest of the theme; however, I do like it and would have like to seen it as an outtake/deleted scene.

Thanks for the link! I've never read the script before. Wonder if that scene was actually shot?

Edible rubber? George definitely saw into the not too distant future. ;)

Well, I put my vote in. Let's hope it makes a difference. Would love to see this released.

Voted as well. Surprised to see The Big Sleep hasn't been released already, as well as any food packaging using the word "moist". That's something you don't see a lot of today.

Sorry to say, but Judith Crist's page-and-a-half review arrived and it contains only a few hand-written editing notes:

                                George Lucas's
Science fiction fans will find THX 1138 a disappointment.

                      in the dramatic category
that film won first prize in the National Student Film Festival
                                 ^

One suspects he had 1925 rather than 2500 in mind

Yep, that's it all!

This ... a Warner Archive survey for future Blu Ray releases, with a write in option! You can only vote for three titles, or two plus the write in vote.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/?sm=I38prSm8KssR1ksG5p5kGg==

... So, pick two movies from the list and write in vote for THX. And be specific about which version. ;)

Thanks for the heads-up SilverWook! I squeezed both early versions in my write-in (while the survey was still open) -- the 1971 theatrical release version, and (or) the 1978 Lucas original version.

This is the entire THX1138 1971 version, as it was when originally released in Cinemas. It is a 16mm print, that is faded very heavily to red. This file is an attempt to rescan the print with a different technique to recover whatever colour still remains on the print. It will need cleanup, colour correction, stabilisation, sound sync etc. It is the only record so far of how the film was originally presented to audiences in 1971. I have also viewed a 1971 35mm Tech-IB and it is the same as far as content goes, so this is how the film was in 1971.

I think this is the first time since then that we can see that version of the film.

This is pretty major. Thanks poita! F***in awesome! :)

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

What you probably saw of the SEN scene was a monochrome version done just so people could see what the 16mm print looks like sans all the color issues that needs to be fixed.

Poita has told me the Buck Rogers scene was omitted to get the file size down. It's on the print. :)

What releases was the Buck Rogers scene on? Was it the original 1971 release or the 1977 rerelease? Or both?

Buck is present on every version we know about. The 16mm is the 1971 version.

Cedric, like Silver said all english language versions available to us contain the Buck Rogers intro. Throughout this thread I have posted a Hollywood Reporter review from the 1971 premiere which mention its inclusion. The IMDB info is incorrect in this case. (print variations are still possible of course)

It's on the Laserdisc versions ('78 cut), at least.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

All the video releases have it. I have everything save the Blu Ray, which apparently was so badly designed, some players need extra memory just to load the bloated menus!

George may replace Buster Crabbe with Gil Gerard for the 50th anniversary Director Director's Cut though. ;)

That's weird, it's not on either of the UK VHS releases I owned. And I thought the DVD had a clip from a different B&W film?

We need a place where to update all the confirmed info on all the releases as they come out. A wiki or a googledoc, something like that!

What do you think?

Ah, you're right. It was absent on a few early homevideo releases. The last UK VHS, released in 1995 included it.

I stand corrected. Either it was a rights issue with Buck, or maybe they used a print where it was missing? Someone unfamiliar with THX would never know it was gone.

Yes, if I recall correctly, this was only the case with a few early video releases in Britain. The way I understand it, all American home video releases always included it. Could have been a rights issue like you said.

Is the original trailer for THX 1138 preserved in HD and uncropped? The version on the BR is neither but this youtube clip is uncropped but heavily compressed…

Your YouTube find was probably from the 2004 DVD (see this post from page 52 - http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/623747 ) but definitely not the Blu-ray.

The new forum has broken-up our meticulous formatting from the old forum. But those are presently the pieces, so put them together as best you can. (Since the new forum is a beta, maybe that will all be technologically fixed before too long.)
