Help Wanted: 35mm print request - Deadly Friend (1986) & Fright Night Part II (1988)

I am interested in preserving 2 movies I feel need a 35mm preservation if anyone is willing to use their know-how of, one, tracking down the prints if they are even available and, two, cleaning up the prints.  I am willing to compensate them for the prints and their time of doing any clean up/edits, of course.  The 2 films I am searching for are:

Deadly Friend (1986)

Fright Night Part II (1988)

Any and all help getting this started would be very much appreciated.  Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from those of you interested in getting involved.

Your thread might get buried, your best bet is asking people who do 35mm restorations on this forum if they know someone who has those prints. That, plus monitoring ebay.

Once you have the prints, arranging their scanning shouldn't be too hard if you have the money.

Thanks for the response.  I figured as much.  I hoped that by posting this thread those that have access to the whereabouts of 35mm prints would see this and possibly lend a helping hand.

Keeping my fingers crossed.  Thanks again for the response

Fright Night II already has an outstanding Preservation on Blu Ray.  Check out this thread...

I'm not going to say that you potentially wouldn't benefit from a 35mm print, as it's always nice to have new material for comparisons sake, but considering how good this one is, I'd definitely focus on your other film, Deadly Friend first.

I have that and my own release of FN2 already using the 1080i file, however considering that it is an HDTV file, it's original encode was an MPEG-2 which causes multiple scene-changes to have pixelated blocks (which you will notice if you analyze the scene-changes frame by frame) and the sound could use a professional DTS-HD MA encode.  Using the original film elements would sharpen the picture quality significantly as well as give this film the flawless release that it deserves.

Definitely interested in locating the Deadly Friend 35mm print, though, due to its rarity and likelyhood of never being given an official Blu release, my sights would definitely be set on that one first and foremost.  Thanks for the message

Welcome to the forum.

You will be have to be willing to invest if you want others to invest otherwise you may be disappointed at the responses, or lack of, that you might get with this thread.

A fair amount of us have our coffers kinda tight considering we've contributed to other such projects which are being processed at the moment.

Patience is a virtue but only money and serious interest will get the ball rolling.

Good luck to you.

Thanks, appreciate the response and the welcome.  I am more than willing to invest in whatever its going to take to get this done, if it can in fact be done.

You will note in my opening statement, I made it very clear that "I am willing to compensate them for the prints and their time of doing any clean up/edits, of course. "

+1 to Jetrell Fo's comment. Getting a 35mm print scanned is not exactly cheap or straightforward. You are looking at the cost of purchasing or renting the print (note if you rent it you need permission to scan it from the owner, and most people are not willing to have their prints scanned), you need to have it shipped to your scanner, you then need to have it cleaned and possibly repaired and scanned. Typical scanning cost at 2-4k from a commercial outlet is around $20-30 a minute (and they won't scan a print you don't have rights to). You also need HDD's to store the scanned files on. All up a single scan could cost you around $5,000 or so. You then need someone with expertise to clean-up your scan (or do it yourself if you have the expertise).

Or, if you come to a fan preservation forum, which this is, you find people that do these types of preservations as a hobby and some, for a living.

35mm prints pop up every now and then on ebay and there are also people "in the know" on where else prints of these types can be purchased.  Typically, prints of this nature can start at a couple hundred dollars and go into the thousands.  I have seen users "chip-in" and collaborations have been made for these types of projects in this forum alone, so I know it has been done and can be done again for a reasonable amount of money with the right group of people.  Again, I am more than willing to be on the high-end of the "chipping-in" part.

My purpose for creating this thread is to simply put my requests out there, in hopes that this could be the start of 2 very amazing fan preservations.  I am also well aware of the time, effort, labor and cost something like this consumes. I am currently keeping tabs on this thread:

Team Negative1 - Unofficial Jurassic Park 35mm

Which, btw, I am thoroughly impressed with.  With a little luck and a lot of support, I would love to see these two films get Team Negative1's attention.

Poita scanned Jurassic Park, as far as I know, at his own expense. He owns the scanning machine which is worth around $550,000 new (and has the expertise to use it). Team -1 have a home-built scanner made from a projector (they didn't scan JP though), which poita has said could be built for around $1,000 excluding the costs of the projector, the camera, the computer and required software.

If you're serious you'll need to keep an eye on eBay and see if any prints come up for sale.

Thanks for the info and I will definitely keep my eyes open, as I have been.  I'm sure there are a number of places where 35mm prints can be found, ebay is just the most generic.  If anyone has any information on any of these titles or a known location as to where they could be purchased, please, let me know.  If anyone is willing to help in this matter, it would be very much appreciated.  I'm not so much "in the know" about all know-how's or know-where's but as a serious and interested fan, I'm all for getting this on the go in any way possible with the help of you people.  Thanks again for the response and here's to hoping my requests can, at some point in time, be fulfilled.

The original Jurassic Park 35mm release (Jurassic.Park.1993.35mm.1080p.Cinema.DTS.v1.0) is not related to Team Negative1 in any way. They've tinkered with the scan, but their thread has "unofficial" in its name for a reason. :)

I'm not in-the-know about the technical stuff either, I just parrot back what I hear poita and others saying. As far as sourcing a print your best bet is to watch eBay. When you find one you can ask the AMPS heavyweights if they know anyone who can scan it. Some people might donate to your costs, but you'll probably have to bear the brunt of the cost. It's very premature to ask people to help now before you have a print and someone who will scan it. :)

This thread was to put my requests out there for people "in the know" of locating a print and possibly helping with its preservation.  That is all.  I did not and am not asking for people to pay any money right now.  I would simply like to know if anyone would be interested in helping with the preservation of these two films.  A simple yes or a no is all I was asking for with regard to who would like to help should the time come that a) a print is located and b) funding needed to be in place for the scanning, clean-up and preservation.  Thanks for the message, though :)
