Ok, so I've been busily searching Usenet and the Spleen for copies or preservations of the original full screen pan and scan of the trilogy. I have already added Starkiller's 1982 Video Rental to my collection. What I am wondering is if there are similar transfers of Empire and ROTJ available. I guess what I am after is something akin to what I experienced growing up watching them for the first time. Anyone care to point me in the right direction for Empire and ROTJ? Many thanks!

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Which, if I'm not mistaken, will have to be www.binsearch.info.  (Just checked and they are all there, btw)

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. These were in fact the droids I was looking for. Many thanks!

I just found this today. A video comparing the 1995 THX P&S VHS to the original P&S VHS. What I'll miss most about P&S is how the image is repositioned from release to release as evident in this video. As a child I found it interesting to see the tip of Vader's lightsaber in the top right corner of the closeup of Luke in Empire just as the freezing chamber duel begins on the SE VHS while the 1995 VHS has it positioned where the tip is out of shot. This may sound bizarre but I liked noticing things like this growing up and watching different P&S releases.

I think what I would like to see is a decent quality P&S version of the GOUT (with quality on-par with DJ's V3 DVD) so you could create a set that has the widescreen version and the P&S version. The only issue I would foresee is if the P&S versions take more on the top and bottom of the frame, as I know a lot of P&S or open-matte fullscreen films do. You could technically fill it in with P&S laserdisc and VHS footage, however.

Funny you mention that because I found it rather cheap of Lucas to include the 4:3 widescreen in both the widescreen and fullscreen dvd sets. He wasn't even willing to include a P&S version in the FS set.

This makes me think of something I've been wanting to ask here. I was considering starting a new thread for this but since its roughly the same topic I'll just ask here. Which P&S releases do you feel had the best/worst framing??? I haven't really decided on which I think had the best but for worst I think my vote would be the 1995 VHS'. They're not bad but there's certain shots where I think the framing is a bit off. A good example is the shot where Greedo is shot where they have him framed to the left yet past releases had him centered. Another is the scene in the control room where Han sits down and says 'I'm not going anywhere'. Pre-1995 releases frame it around Han as he sits down which personally i think worked better while subsequent releases frame it around 3PO and Luke. When I get a chance I'll post some examples. If anyone else would like to share some examples go ahead. My summary is based on the US releases. I'm not sure how the UK versions look.

Pan and Scan may have died out for some. We are currently testing some trailers with it.

If we get some good results, we will post them.

Preliminary tests look ok. We are considering a trailer in this format. Stay tuned.

I dusted off an old tube TV I found in the basement the other day and now I'm kind of clamoring for an old school experience. Are there any pan & scan preservations of the entire trilogy out there? All I see on myspleen is the '82 Video Rental Library ANH vhs. If someone's done the Faces tapes, that would really make my day.

It would be nice to recreate a Pan & Scan version using something like the Despecialized version as a source or perhaps even a high quality preservation instead of just a reconstruction. Pan & Scan is how a lot of people first saw the films and they deserve that bit of nostalgia for them just as fans who saw the films in theaters deserve theirs.

We have a ways to go, but that is our plan if we can do it, a 1024x768 4:3 version of Star Wars. It won't match any official release though.

Is that capture still SD resolution though. Ours would be near HD.

I haven't looked at it, so I can't comment on the resolution or quality.

My post wasn't meant as a reply to your post. More of a heads up to interested parties of a FS release that actually exists.

I'd love to see a scan of a flat 16mm print of Star Wars.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

So this is the opposite direction most projects move around here, but bear with me. I just came across a VCR in good working order, and I kind of want to use it to put Star Wars on a tape. Can someone point me towards a solid full screen version? I'd prefer the whole trilogy, but just the first film would be great as well. The 1982 Video Rental Library one on myspleen is pretty rough, I'm hoping for something more recent. The 1995 tapes, say. There's really nothing at all riding on this, I just thought it might be fun to make a tape after a decade plus of discs and files.

...why would you want to make tapes of a tape version? Do you *want* digital artifacts in vhs form?

Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…

Would putting a rip of a tape on a DVD and then taping it off the tv be that different from copying one tape to another? I'm planning to watch this thing on a 13" tube set, quality's not s huge concern. Besides, what's the alternative? Isn't every P&S version out there an analog rip?

If the analog tv experience is what you're after, a low end Laserdisc player and a pan and scan LD of the OT would last you a lot longer. Most people want the modern players with all the bells and whistles, so single sided older players tend to be cheap, at least on Ebay.

Where were you in '77?

You could just go to Goodwill and pick up the 95 tapes for like $3.

First thing I tried, they don't have them and they're more like $20 on Amazon. I think I'll just keep my eyes peeled for those at other thrift stores.

That's really your best option. I don't know what the VHS market is like where your are, but almost every time I am at Goodwill (and I mean specifically Goodwill) I see a copy of the 95 trilogy. Occasionally I run into the older releases, and those seem to be easier to fine at other thrift store. Anyway, good luck!
