The recent book on the making of The Shining has plenty of Kubrick anecdotes.  ;)

2001 was also trimmed down after it's premiere, but the cut footage was found a few years ago in the studio vaults. Maybe Warner's can work something out with Kubrick's estate for the 50th anniversary in 2018.

Going back a few years now but I was Lucky enough to see 2001 A Space Odyssey but with the complete music track removed and the London Symphony orchestra played the music score live whilst watching the film.

Pretty good experience so they are up for doing things to celebrate his films. I don't know if that will go as far as restoring a bit of trimmed footage and certainly not putting the ending back in the shining.

Does it go against the grain of the film maker to have deleted scenes on a DVD, I think it probably does. It's not something in the spirit of Kubrick.

160 minute version of 2001 (vs 139 minutes)... Woah I never knew that!!! Trimmed down after the premiere. THat's more than a trim :)
