I just love it when people go around proclaiming their subjective opinion as objective fact. It never gets old.

1. Yes it does.
2. Ben Kenobi's name is not a "subjective opinion". It's, like, in the movie. You know, the movie about Ben Kenobi?
Any additional speculation not only violates Occam's Razor, but is in fact the height of obsessive, fruitless fanboy obscurantism because it's all an elaborate solution in search of a puzzle. I mean, who on earth would ever think to come up with wild, convoluted theoriews on "why did people keep calling that guy in the movie 'Ben' and also he answered to the name??? We've got to figure out this deep mystery!"????
Is it a "subjective opinion" that my avatar is "Darth Id," or do we all need to start generating elaborate EU-style epicyclical "theories" on why it always says "Darth Id" next to my comments?

Nah, he's just trying* to be funny.

Yeah, he's identified as Ben. He's also identified as Obi-Wan. There's nothing in the movie that definitively confirms which of the two names in his birth name.

I'm sure there's someone out there who thinks your opinion does the very same.

"Ben" being the alias isn't any more-or-less an elaborate solution than "Obi-Wan" being the alias.

Some of the posters here, apparently. Perhaps they're cognitively deficient, but I prefer to assume otherwise.

No, that you go under the handle of "Darth Id" isn't subjective. The origins of the name and the motivations for you using it, though, are (at least to us outsiders who aren't privy to your innermost thoughts & feelings).

I don't recall any prequel bullshit covering this topic, actually.

Ditto. I don't think the name "Ben" as referring to Obi-Wan was mentioned once, even in ROTS.
Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…
Maybe it was the name of the previous occupant of that little house out by the Dune Sea? The original Ben was eaten by a Krayt dragon. ;)

Yup. The fact that only Luke and Owen (and I guess Leia once) seem to know "Ben" by that name would imply that it is the alias (as opposed to Obi-Wan which is what everyone - those three people plus Vader, Tarkin and Yoda - know him by).
Obviously it's not explicitly stated so it's open a little to interpretation (read: subjective opinions) but if you ask me Occam's Razor says that Ben is the alias.

We see what you did there, for we are many.

Fortunately, Lucas sold the franchise before he could explain Ben's name. You know, because Lucas is so clever with regard to names e.g., Sidious, Tyranus, Grievous.
Left to Lucas we may have eventually learned Ben's real name was Count Infectious, or Lord Contagious, or maybe Senator Atrocious.
Nah, Lucas would never have given him those names. After all, he ain't a villain. He probably would have made "Ben" short for "Benny Volent" or "Benny Phishaunt".
"Ben" being the alias isn't any more-or-less an elaborate solution than "Obi-Wan" being the alias.
Except that "Ben" is a name, while "Obi-Wan" is some strange mystical title.
But you know what? You guys are right. We need to get to the bottom of this deep perplexing enigma.
And while we're at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill's character "Luke Skywalker," since it's my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle. It just doesn't make sense!
Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle "Luke"!
Damn You!!!!!
Just like Anakin is a name, or Mon, Biggs, Wedge, or even Darth. "Hey have you met Darth Smith and his wife Mon? They have a kid, too, he's called Wedge." Your argument makes perfect sense.
Ceci n’est pas une signature.

From the film: "Obi-Wan? Now that's a NAME I've not heard in a long time."
Pfft. You can't trust anything Ben says.

True. Just ask Schnarzle. He's always pullin' that kid's leg.

I'm sure Lucasites will claim that the Dark Lord's moniker was meant to evoke the image of a Dark Father but we know the code was originally going to be words beginning with "in" but with the "in" taken out ergo Sidious but then he thought Darth Capacity and Darth Absentia sounded a bit fem.
So Maul.
I can just imagine Christopher Lee talking to his agent, "So his birth name is Duke Dooku?? What's his Sith Moniker Darth Diplodocus? *giggle* WHAT! You better be 5h1tt1ng me!"

I suspect it's either as Tobar said, or that he changed his name into "Ben" before serving the Organas in the Clone Wars.
Nope--sorry, but Ben is just his name. That's all.
Sorry. That hasn't been true since the fourth-draft script of Star Wars from early 1976.

Oh, well THAT expl--
...wait, wut?
That settles it IMO, his name is "Ben Kenobi".
I still imagine "Obi-Wan" is a nickname/honorific/rank he earned during the Clone Wars. "Obi-Wan" being his first name is just a post 1999 prequel thing and therefore not canon ;-)

Now we've got to figure out which of the two spellings of his name -- "Obi-Wan" or "Obi-wan" -- is the correct one. ;-)
Interesting thread. I'll side with those that feel that "Obi-Wan" is rather a title than a name, especially since it resembles "Pada-Wan" quite a lot.
ANH established that Leia knew his real or adopted first name of "Ben".
That he adopted it before the time Luke (and Leia) were born could also be a gesture of huumility, i.e. that he himself felt he no longer deserved the title "Obi-Wan"- after his failure training Luke's father adequately to withstand the tempations of the Dark Side.
Addressing him as "Obi-Wan" in her holomessage I'd say by already doing that Leia made it clear that his capabilities as an "Obi-Wan" were absolutely necessary to see to it that the Death Star plans were safely delivered to Alderaan.
Anyway, I prefer to only refer to "Ben Kenobi", by sticking with his ANH name I believe I express sufficiently that I have no big love for the PT.
Lucas on the colorization of the THREE STOOGES in 2004: "Maybe just the fact that they're in black and white makes it funny, because their humor is dated. But by putting it in black and white, it puts it in a context where you can appreciate it for what it was." Lucas on film preservation before Congress in 1988: "The public's interest is ultimately dominant over all other interests."
That wizard’s just a crazy old man.
But I, too, loved the idea that OB-1 was a clone or cloned, how that might’ve tied into the Clone Wars - but then, Guinness pronounces “wan” all wrong anyway in the movie.

Or everyother actor afterwards pronounced it wrong and he pronounced it right 😉
