It is anamorphic 720x576. Though with some slight black bars on the left and right.

Now available on myspleen.

Thanks a lot! I wonder why they aired the original version in 2013...

There has to be an HD version of this broadcast.  I hope it surfaces at some point.

Makes me wonder if there could be HD versions of the 1997 SE OT captures floating around somewhere.

Yes there is and as far as I know it's already available. More info here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/THE-PHANTOM-MENACE-THEATRICAL-HD-Toppers-Version/topic/17137/

The HD version was still available on usenet in 2013. I don't use usenet so I have no idea if you can still get it. There may be torrents of it somehwere but (obviously nobody is seeding it).

The usenet link can be found here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-HD-rips/post/659396/#TopicPost659396

I don't think that link mentions any HD source for the missing shots from the theatrical version.  He was just using a 720p version of the 2004 DVD master.

Also, StarmanSkywalker has never made his recording available.  I wish we could help him liberate that footage :)

Oh. I was so sure that at least the second thread I linked would have been about the theatrical version. I admit that I just quickly glanced through many threads.

My apologies!

Sorry for the sluggish updates, I'm having real problems with avisynth right now and haven't yet been able to diagnose the problem (despite reinstalling 2.5.8/2.6/MT etc).

Apparently, someone on 4chan found this. Can someone confirm if one of these is the German HDTV recording or just the Blu Ray rip? It's on rutracker.

Awesome. Would be great to know if these are really the HDTV preservations. I would also get but my internet speed is rubbish.

The 30 GB one is apparently a recording from June 5th, 2009 in Germany.

I'm having the torrent client download in sequential order, so the file will play. What's the earliest indication of theatrical? Wasn't the opening crawl color changed?

edit: nevermind, that was for the blu-ray. The 16gb torrent looks identical to my HDTV (DVD transfer) as far as I can tell. Was excited at first, but it turns out there's a lot of gate weave on it normally.

The 34gb download certainly has a different 20th century fox transfer. Looks cleaner and I would say it's the blu-ray if it weren't a 2009 cap.

I'm not really sure. All I know for sure is that it does confirm that it is indeed an HDTV airing.

http://www.fernsehserien.de/star-wars/folgen/episode-i-die-dunkle-bedrohung-661794

Here's a screenshot from it, it distinctly looks like the DVD version, but hard to tell. Also, the earliest indication would have to be the pod racing scene, if I'm not wrong. The opening sequence change is only present from DVD -> Blu ray.

The runtimes on those torrents are 02:16:05 and
02:16:11, so they are the DVD cut. The 34GB one is the German HDTV recording but doesn't contain the German audio, the audio was replaced with Russian and English tracks.

This is what it says:

???. ??????????: ???????? ????? - Sky Broadcasting/German Premier Hybrid Caps (June 2009)

The bit in Russian that's just been replaced by ???? translates to: "Extras. Info: Video Source"

I didn't suggest that, in fact I might download it myself soon. It could  be a valuable resource if it contains a different transfer of the film!

BUT... I think it's the same as the one schorman13 used as the basis for his HDTV preservation.

I've only seen the first few seconds of the 34gig one. But at least the Fox logo is indeed a different transfer. :P

I've stopped the 16gb because it does look identical several minutes in.

There's a torrent 11.5 GB in size that has a slightly different video transfer (although it looks to be about the same quality as the schorman version), it's also the DVD cut. It also claims to be the same German broadcast as the 34GB torrent. So I was wrong it is different to the cap that schorman used.

Here's a screenshot.

The 30+GB version is simply a patchwork using both Sky and Premiere HDTV versions, reencoded... so, I think it's not worth the time (and band) to download it...

I've spent extensive time on this looking at those, it appears that the larger files on RUtracker were actually completed with direct instructions from Wookiegroomer, so can be assumed to be near identical to his releases, though with different initial encodes, so both are generation two sources derived from the two initial broadcast releases.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

is occasional double posting frowned upon here? anyway..

Any chance you could help me get my hands on Schorman's version? It's the biggest reason I joined the site. I've been scouring the internet for it (see my last post) but I can't find it. Any help here would be hot.
