A Bronx Tale - best quality version available?

I passed on the DVD because the (Region 2 Universal) UK release is full frame and though there is an Region 1 HBO release that's billed as widescreen and 16:9, according to reviews, it's not actually anamorphic. Recently, it was shown by the BBC in HD but that was also a 4:3 version and apparently it's available on BD in widescreen but from what I've read, massive amounts of DNR have been applied.

Does anyone know what is the best available version of this film and if it was meant to be seen in 4:3 or 16:9?

A Bronx Tale was probably shot in Academy then masked to 1.85 for theatrical. So the 4:3 version doesn't lose much on the sides, only gaining extra space and showing production gaffes (ala boom mikes) not meant to be seen.

The HBO release is 16:9 anamorphic (double checked, its 4:3 letterbox 1.78:1; fucking HBO Video!!). But being an early DVD mastered from the laserdisc source, its not pretty looking combined with poor compression methods. The Universal DVD is made from a new(er) master and is believed to have its grain structure intact (not released on BD by them in the states as of yet).

Then, like you said, there's the SC BDs which are from the UK prints which have been subject to DNR.

Hi, thanks for replying.

The UK Blu-ray is by StudioCanal and according to the following, suffers from DNR:

There's a German BD but apparently it's from the same afflicted master.

It seems like the best bet is to wait for a hopefully superior US release (I'm in the UK but my PS3 is modded and can play all regions) and in the meantime, cap the BBC's 4:3 version on its next airing.

I thought Uni released a BD in the U.S, but then I read up and it was pulled when StudioCanal kept moving up the UK release date.

Hopefully, that BD will come (with a better transfer as Universal is the U.S rights holder while it seems SC is the international owner)
