It seems to be the closest to the theatrical timing (if a little to blue).
I do plan on doing this project at some point but Ive had a rough year in terms of work, and that equals money has been tight, which in turn equals all kinds of problems and stress. So been having a break from preservations and fan related stuff until im in a better place. Things are looking better now but Im just stupid busy.
Great to hear the DTS is being synced. And I have been following the thread while a little silent, there has been some great information on the theatrical presentations and i think we are on the right track for this preservation.

The Ritz location Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX is showing The Dark Knight in original 35mm this month. Sadly, I won't be able to make it but if anyone is near then go check it out while tickets are still available!

There is a telecine version available in kickass website which is a scan from a 35mm release print. And the Colour timing is very similar to how most 35mm prints look projected on cinemas that I remember. The skin tones are warmer and the blues have a slight purple shift that is a standard look of photochemical timing. Though it is a low quality version, the organic feel of the video is obvious.

No no, this is not a screener, it’s a telecine which are stabilised recordings of a 35mm release print from inside the projection booth, rather than by amateurs with shaky cams inside the cinema hall (telesync). These show the true colours and brightness of a projected 35mm print.

A telecine is completely different:
“A copy captured from a film print using a machine that transfers the movie from its analog reel to digital format. These were rare because telecine machines for making these prints were very costly and very large. However, they have recently become much more common. Telecine has basically the same quality as DVD, since the technique is same as digitizing the actual film to DVD. However, the result is inferior since the source material is usually a lower quality copy reel. Telecine machines usually cause a slight left-right jitter in the picture and have inferior color levels compared to DVD.”
A Telesync is produced by setting up a semi-pro/pro camera within the cinema, often in the projection booth. The copies obtained from “shaky cams” are known simply as cam’s, not telesyncs.

Back to TDK… Would you rate the HDTV version as being superior in colours, tones etc to that of the BD?

My definition of what a Telecine is may have been slightly misguided, but The Dark Knight copy I was talking about was not a telesync camrip, it was a telecine done from a theatrical print. I prefer its colours over the Bluray becasue the TC shows the proper theatrical colour timing. The picture is slightly warmer and the blues shift towards purple. The HDTV version uses the same cool tone colours as the bluray and uses the same master as well. Just pan scanned in the 35mm segments and cropped to 1.78:1 in the IMAX segments.

Thanks for the information. It looks like the HDTV version I have (recorded from British television) is different to the one you describe because it has a constant 2.35:1 aspect ratio, same as my retail DVD.

I am very interested in this project and have been trying to follow along myself. I love the movie but have hated the blu-ray due to edge enhancement and the color timing. As I tried to create the media to follow along I ran into a few problems. I am running a Mac but decided to bootcamp in order to import the VC1 files from the Blu-Ray, and editing them back on the OS X side. After exporting both the BB Prologue and Dark Knight video streams I noticed two major issues.
- The color in the both clips is different from their original sources. It looks like maybe the original has a slight a very slight shift towards green/yellow areas.
- At around 2:53 in the Dark Knight stream green frames start to appear during every encode attempt.
These issues have occurred independent of what codec was being used, UT QT and ProRes being the major ones I am testing.
Note that I am using Adobe Media Encoder as that is what is available to me cost free right now.
