The first version is out. The updated one is not yet. Harmy has been very busy lately.

Hopefully it will not bug him too much to ask, infrequently: how are things coming along, Harmy?

I'm more hyped for ROTJ 2.0 more than anything on this site right now. It's long overdue for a rehaul with all the new sources that have become available since he made 1.0.

I agree (though only overdue in the sense that something quite similar should have been sold to us, officially, many years ago).

I am sure this one is going to look good enough to pass for an official release.

With all of the 35mm footage being used in 2.0, has there been any further thought about going 1080p this time? I've also been meaning to ask: Harmy, have you taken a look at DrDre's upscale results? Any thoughts on if you might use that for some of the must-GOUT shots?

In an attempt to limit the question to: "Are we there yet?", Harmy has said at some point in this thread that ROTJ 2.0 will be GOUT-free, so while DrDre's new GOUT upscales are impressive, they are unneeded, at least for this film.  Probably not needed for any films at the rate -1 is progressing.

Re: 1080p, also unlikely.  Going to 1080p would involve 1) re-despecializing every scene, and 2) no longer using the Blu-rays as a primary source, since all you get above 720p for those is sharpening artifacts.  Never say never, but I'm not holding my breath.

Perhaps I'm reading the wrong posts, then. I read some fairly recent ones that said he wouldn't be completely escaping the GOUT, though its use will surely be minimal. The Dre upgrade for Jedi will less substantial than for the other films (I've actually run some tests with V10, but I wouldn't be surprised if he can further optimize things). My question is really for any of Harmy's future releases.

It's true, though, that if Team -1 finishes first, that will be a pretty solid source available. It will be a while before they get through SW and ESB, though. Not sure if Harmy will want to work with their release encodes or only their full resolution frames that they've been kindly providing him.

Hmm, maybe I'm thinking of ESB 2.5.  Either way, the need for GOUT upscales is dropping precipitously as -1 releases more scans--I don't think there'll be much need for GOUT by the time this release rolls around.

-1 is a former member of Team -1, and Team -1 is releasing the scans without his input or effort.  Also, we have some prime real estate in Florida to sell you that is completely not a swamphole.

Harmy, I know you're busy with your new job, but I'm sure a lot of us have wondered if you've fit any RotJ work in recently?  Have you gotten all or most of the scans from -1 you'd hoped for originally?  Is there anything any of us could do to help you on the project (I doubt that credits will need to be recreated like we did for Empire, but that's an example of a type of busy work we could hammer away on for you)?

Just hoping for some update scraps for us to gnaw on.

Do you mean because they might be available on 35mm? I wonder which route would take more work/time. Cleanup of the film vs. reconstructing? I suppose it will depend on the amount of damage and warping of the film.

Film was used for the Star Wars credits even though we'd already made a very good reconstruction.  I'd say if he has the film elements, he'll use them, and stability/cleanup will be less of an issue for ROTJ than it was for SW.  I think the only reason we have a reconstruction for ESB is because the timing just didn't work out right for getting the film elements.

Oh, wow. I knew that 35mm was listed as a source for the SW credits, but for some reason assumed it was used as the basis for creating a reconstruction. They do indeed look great.

Indeed, film scans of the ESB credits weren't available in time for ESB V2.0, but I believe Harmy said he has scans now for future use on ESB.  I assume, if available, he'll go with real film elements on RotJ credits over a reconstruction, as well.  As nice as the reconstruction credits can turn out, you can't really beat the authenticity of the original credits (I think the reconstruction for ESB was a last resort, at the time).

Still, it is sort of fun seeing how anal everyone can get when proofing reconstruction credits.

We are getting so close to that "day that will be long remembered" when the GOUT is nothing but a memory of a years-long recurring nightmare.

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

I feel like Jedi is not going to happen. When's the last time Harmy posted here?

It's gonna happen - there are just some things moving in the background that I can't really talk about (or affect for that matter) that I'm waiting for so as not to do redundant work.

Spectacular news. I've been fiending for this all over again ever since those videos pointing out the various SE changes made the rounds a couple weeks ago and I was reminded of just how unwatchable the Jedi blu ray is (I was in the middle of powering through the blu rays for the first time in a while because it had been a long time since I'd seen the whole trilogy at the same quality, but that reminder made me bail). Harmy, I'm not sure which of the three threads this belongs in, and I'm sorry if it's already been covered, but I listened to your interview on that podcast last night and your mention of doing a 3.0 release once negative 1's 35mm versions are available jumped out at me. I was wondering, whenever the time for those eventually comes, do you plan to do them in 1080p rather than 720p? It seems like the availability of that footage would enable a jump in quality for the DE.

Sadly, no.
