Terminator 2: 80's synth edition/No social commentary edition (title pending) (Released)

Hey guys, a long while back I made a small fan edit of T2 called “The 80’s edition” where I removed the “bad to the bone” music and replaced it with the terminator’s “theme” from the first movie whenever he’s walking around and stuff. I also did various trimmings where I removed the whole “you can’t kill people” angle, as well as the whole “it’s in your nature to destroy yourself” stuff, and of course, the terminator learning why people cry, and talking jive. Overall I was able to get the film down to exactly 2 hours. Oh, and I replaced Guns N’ Roses with Van Halen’s song “Judgement Day”, which came out the very same year as T2. My edit never got outta the “unapproved” section of fanedit.org, and then it was lost when the site was given a major re-work.

Well, the pilot light’s back on and I’m ready to tackle this again. This time I plan on using a german dvd of the film that doesn’t have as much of the blanket blue color timing (some scenes still have it and I’ll be editing it or using alternate sources as I must have like 6 different T2 dvds as this point), I’m redoing the entire soundtrack using his 80’s inspired synth music called “New-retrowave”, rebuilding all new sound effects so that this movie sounds more like a sequel to T1 (doing the opposite of what they did for the 5.1 mix of T1 to make it sound more like T2), and I might even give the movie a used vhs-tape look and sound to it.

I don’t have a cutlist ATM as I don’t remember what was trimmed and removed the first time I did this, but for now, here’s some VERY ROUGH edits I’ve put together real quick.

And here's another one I did that I'm on the fence about music-wise, but I like the way I've edited this scene, as the original is full of goofs. The fact that they were going fast on the motorcycle and shouldn't have been anywhere near the truck when it exploded notwithstanding, there also a shot of the tunnel/duct where they're not there at all. It's funny how a bad edit like this has never once been criticized by anyone before.

So here's my way of trying to fix this.

I like this idea. Watching the clips with the new music made it have that 80s feel that the first movie had. In the second clip, I felt there could have been a break from the music after a while, as it went on and on. The ears need a break from the music, otherwise it seems to take away the effectiveness of it.

In the 3rd clip, I liked how you ended it with them just not stopping at all, which seems entirely logical. Logic is what the Terminator should be thinking with, as he is just a machine. It always bothered me that he stopped to look back at the explosion and waited with his shotgun to see if the T-1000 was coming out. He already knows how powerful and dangerous the T-1000 is, and shouldn't expect the explosion to do any damage to it. That shotgun isn't going to do anything to it and the T-800 knows it. Just driving without looking back as the explosion happens? Yeah, that is definitely safer for John Connor than stopping and waiting to see what happens next.

Hey Tyler.  I watched T2 a few weeks ago with some mates.  We all agreed that Sarah's monologues could do with removal. A lot of the time she's just stating stuff you can get from watching what's going on anyway. Any chance you can cut some or all of these?

Oh you know it. I already downloaded the "Terminator word font" to overlay into the video. My edit of T2 will open EXACTLY as T1 with text giving us Sarah's opening monologue about Judgement Day, and her ending monologue that tells us what skynet did and plan to do (The computers that control the machines, skynet, sent 2 terminators back through time...it was just a matter of which reaches him first).

The ending monologue will be completely removed, as I plan to end my edit either on Sarah's close-up with John crying in her arms (simple fade to black), or the final shot of the Terminator's chip /POV going black/shorting out. Seeing as how the end of the movie with her narration was added last minute anyway, I was always off-put by this ending even when I first saw the film in theaters at 7 years old. My honest, 7 year old impression was "Why am I seeing this part with the road again? What the heck is Sarah talking about?"

The narration with her watching John teaching the Terminator gestures "In an insane world, it was the sanest choice") will be either edited somewhat or removed entirely. Since I'm using music and re-doing most of the sound effects, continuity will not be a problem. I could very well take that part out entirely since all we really need to move the plot forward is see the terminator get the truck engine working. However, my only problem I can foresee ATM is the Terminator's final thumbs up at the end of the film, as we see John teaching it how to do that during Sarah's narration. As much as I wanna keep it in for continuity's sake during those final shots, it's just...so...damn....forced, and cheesy.

As for her other narration when the terminator tells Dyson about the future....I'm still shrugging my shoulders on that one. See, we can't hear what the terminator is saying under Sarah's narration, and I feel using more text is out of place, as it would be the only other time my edit of the movie would use it. Already I'm just thinking "Ah, screw it. That 1 narration can stay", but don't worry, Dyson's "throw up" line will not. For as good as Cameron can be with humor, making a joke about the near-end of mankind and the total end of civilization is not where it belongs. TBH, the forced humor in this movie is one of my main reasons for doing this edit. Followed in a close 2nd by the forced social commentary.

Though I gotta admit, after making my first draft of this before seeing Avatar, T2's social message pales in comparison lol.

Good to hear about the monologues. I dunno about the thrown up line from Dyson. I don't think it's trying to be funny or played for laughs, at least I never got that from it.

I vote for the Terminator POV for the last thing we see. It would be pretty unique I think.

Here's another rough-cut /blueprint preview. This is how my opening credits will play out. I used the T2 teaser trailer that shows the T-101 being built in the factory.

Please forgive the changes in AR as I'm using various sources and sometimes the AR just changes on it's own for some reason. Also please forgive the abrupt cuts between shots. I need to learn a little animation to fix those parts.

Not bad, not bad at all. The title part could use a little work, but well, it is just a rough draft.

My weird suggestion: I think it would look better with at least most of the As flipped around to slant the other way.

Thanks. I gotta learn zome animation with a real video editing program so that the zoom works better. I did notice the A's pointing in the wrong direction. I have a few other Terminator fonts, so I'll see if any of the other ones do it right but if not, then I don't mind.

Interesting.

Something about using the teaser as a title sequence strikes me as a bit TV-showy. Maybe in ratio it'll look different though. Nice ideas!

Ok, I did a few test videos today. The first I'm on the fence about which one to go with. Opinions MUCH appreciated.

And lastly, one I am sure about. Hope you guys like it.

For the first video, I like option #3, most likely cause of the familiarity, but also because it has a heroism to it that fits the scene. It also fits nicely with the length of the scene, without feeling like it is missing anything.

I like the second video. It really feels like it could be a scene from the first movie. It has the same tone exactly.

Gonna have something up later tonight. It won't be a completed scene but it'll have *some* sound effects :)

Hi everyone, been a while I know. Work is what it is. Anyway, I’ve started messing around with the color, horribly lol. Arnold’s steel metal blue is now a ghostly/ghostly gray. I’ll work on that later but for now just check out the song I’m using for the T-800’s arrival:

Edit Apparently in some of the trailers, sometimes the night scenes had this same purple timing problem:
