I didn't want to clutter up any more topics with this kind of discussion, so I decided to start a thread where you can funnel all of your thoughts about the EU Novels into one place.

Thrawn Trilogy

Excellent. The perfect, best place to begin reading SW novels. Actually, I never read Heir to the Empire, but I'm sure it is just as good as the other two. (?/10 9/10 9/10)

Hand of Thrawn

Perfect. I didn't think Zahn could do it agian, but he did. Granted I read them all this summer, after last command, I didn't think Zahn could take Thrawn anywhere else. But this proved he is the master. I enjoyed Vision more than Specter. (8/10 10/10)

New Jedi Order

Mostly great. There were a few boring ones, but a few out of ninteen is pretty good, right? Over allscore: (9/10)

Tatooine Ghost

Pretty good. I was a little dissapointed in the ending, and reading about the mechanics of dying in a desert is a little... unpleasatn., but it really made the end of NJO all the more worth it. (7/10)

A New Hope Novel

I don't guess this counts as EU per-say, but It was really amazing. It prooves that Lucas should probably say 'to Kessel' with his movie career and become a full-time novelist.(10/10)

Attack of the Clones Novel

RA Salvatore did the best with what he was given, and he did a really good job. But AoTC isn't quite as powerful without the visual stimuli, mostly because the characters are so much weaker than Han Leia and Luke. still a good read.(8/10)

Actually, Lucas didn't write the ANH novel, it was ghost-written by Alan Dean Foster.

What? What is 'ghost written'? Lucas's name is on the book! What the heck is with that?

A ghost writer happens when you tell someone what you want, give them an outline basically, and then they go write it and give it back to you and you put your name on it if it's what you wanted. Most celebrity works are ghost written.

how odd i almost started this very same thread yesterday....

anyways...

i have read all the SW main plot line books from shodows up to half way through Children of the Jedi, which i had trouble finishing do to my uttter dislike of it at the time. My question to yall would be is it worth picking them back up? i am making my way through" the legend of the 5 rings" sagas and am wondering if i should give the star wars books another try...

Well. It is definitely worth it if you know which books to get.

Anything written by Tim Zahn is excellent, as is most of the New Jedi Order.

But if you've been out of it for a while, definitely start with Zahn's Heir to the Empire, as it introduces some of the most important EU characters, such as Mara Jade, Talon Karde, and Borsk Fey'lya.

Well, I would read I, Jedi before you moved any farther. To me, the only other books worth reading after that is the NJO.

But the Correlian Trilogy will help you understand some plots in the NJO better, so you could read that after I, Jedi.

my main recomends are

the Thrawn Trilogy, + hand of thrawn by Tim Zahn.

then

the Xwing series by Mike Stackpole. bloody good

splinter of the minds eye by alan dean foster (nostalgia value)

han solo at stars end + the other two by Brian daley (he also wrote the NPR radio dramas)

NICE TO SEE THAT SOMEBODY ELSE RECOMMENDS SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE.

If you consider the knowledge that they had then about SW, then the Lando trilogy is a decent read.

Can you think of any continuity errors that the new novels/movies make?

Heck, nice to see someone recommend the X-wing series by Stackpole and someone else who's name escapes me. "Splinter" is good, as is Stackpole's I, Jedi.

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

are you speaking of any novel vs. any movei continuity errors, or specifically the njo novels and the movies?

Well of course, there is a considerable amount of continuity errors.

I've have to say I have a tossup between the Han Solo trilogy (the new ones, not the Classics...although those are very entertaining), the Young Jedi Knights (after Heir, these were the first I read), and the X-Wing books. I loved the X-Wings books so much my old screenname was Rogue925. Rogue 9-Corran, 25- my first bball jersey number. In fact, I've half salvaged the Rogue part in my current screenname/email: TtnsRogue.

Overall...probably the X-Wing books are my favorites.
Which is the more foolish, the fool (the OT) or the fool who follows (the PT)?

The X-Wings are probably my favorites as well, or at least they are ones that you can read more than once.

Personally I just don't like the EU. I honestly tried to get into it... the only Star Wars novels I read and enjoyed were the novelizations of the OT. Afterwards I tried to read Heir to the Empire, but I just found it abysmally boring and it didn't "feel" like a Star Wars novel to me. I also tried out Splinter of the Mind's Eye, but again it felt more like a generic fantasy adventure than a Star Wars novel.

I used to own The Mandalorian Armor too, but I'm not a Boba Fett fanboy so I really never bothered with that one. I just didn't care about some incedental character.

But the OT Novelizations forever maintain a place on my shelf.

If you dislike the EU, then why click on a thread called "EU Novel Discussion"????

It seems sort of counterintuitive to me, but, it is a free country, I suppose.

whats wrong with a little discussion as to why someone doesnt like the EU, as long as it is civil, and doesnt bleed over into personal attacks. Differing opinions should always be welcome so that perspective remains in balance...
