It is his hand. I was curious to know for sure myself now so I took a screen shot into Photoshop and zoomed in. It's 100% a hand with a lightsaber.  Though it's not gripping it.  The hand is open falling in beside the hilt of the saber.  Afterwards I stumbled on this-

http://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/8053/is-that-lukes-hand-falling-down-at-the-end-of-the-empire-strikes-back

My screenshot actually turned out clearer than this one, though I don't know if it's different because mine is from the special ed.  It also really looks like his left hand which is curious.

I don't think it is his hand. Luke was sucked into one of those many red circular vent things which you can see all over the place in that huge funnel.

when Luke falls, he gets pulled sideways into one of those vents, he then travels down a silver corrugated tube where he comes to rest, theres no sign of the severed hand or lightsaber

that tube opens & Luke falls again down another similar tube to a hatch which is already open to the weather vane

Luke lands on the weather vane with a jolt, the weather vane moves with Lukes weight, then we see the piece of debris falling

If this was Lukes hand, the chances of the hand & lightsaber being sucked into the same vent, and falling out of the city after Luke falls out are pretty slim

I think its just debris added to make you more aware how perilous Lukes situation is

Having subsequently goggled this, it appears that this debate has been rumbling on for many years.

This excerpt from the script would seem to confirm that it was indeed intended to be debris:

EXT. BOTTOM OF CLOUD CITY - WEATHER VANE - DUSK

Unable to hang onto the pipe, Luke tumbles out, emerging at the
undermost part of Cloud City.  Reaching out desperately, he manages to
grab onto on electronic weather vane.

                LUKE
        Ben... Ben, please!

Luke tries to pull himself up on the weather vane but slips back down.
He hooks one of his legs around the fragile instruments.  All the
while, a powerful current of air rushes out at him from the exhaust
pipe.

                LUKE
        Ben.  Leia!

There is an ominous cracking sound from the base of the
weather vane and a piece breaks off, falling into the clouds far below.

                LUKE
        Hear me!  Leia!

Ronsters observations are always interesting to read, even if the visuals are now locked down :-)

Loving the newest clip! The added details such as seeing the underneath of cloud city when Lando and Luke are descending back into the Falcon and when the Falcon is flying away from the TIE fighters is great. Also all the added Superstardestroyer bridge perspectives are incredible.  I'll always love the original films, however seeing all these added details makes it like your watching the movie again for the first time!  Someone above mentioned the bending of the amputated hand stump and I don't think it's that bad in Empire, but I think they definitely should have corrected it with Vader in Jedi, because it's very noticeable.  One last thing I'm wondering, has anything spliced all the released clips from Adywan together?  I mean to get a rudimentary but the best next thing to the actual release of the project?

It's a pair of folding macro binoculars Luke had in his rear left pouch that got jarred loose when he hit the weather vane.  In 1980 we originally thought it was his pistol, which would have made more sense to lose - but continuity left it in his holster when he was trying to climb back up the vane.

I find your lack of faith…disturbing

Is there a splitscreen of the blu-ray with the latest clip?

 No

You know I always thought it was his hand and never had reason to doubt it. A broken piece of the weathervane is so much less interesting :/

Visually, and imagination-wise, I don't see how a severed hand clutching a lost weapon is not more interesting than simply falling debris.

A weather vane can't crawl up to your neck and choke you.

For starters there is no hand or lightsaber present while Luke goes skating through the gerbil tube.  Seeing as the hand was severed a couple of minutes prior to him taking a leap I would think that it would be present in the gerbil tube on his trip through it.  There's a whole lotta places in that big wind tunnel that it could have been sucked into, the thought of it just happening to go down the same pipe as Luke did is pretty lame, the thought of someone recovering it from where ever it landed is even lamer.

It's not so much an issue of whether it is interesting or not but whether it is plausible based on what is in the frame of the movie.

But the door Luke falls through to the outside or underside of Cloud city only opens when he stops going down the gerbil tube as you say... So it is possible that the door opening created a further suction and the hand because it is lighter did not have as much inertia as Luke so he probably went past it only for it to follow him down afterwards...

Make any sense? Seriously I only just thought about this now for the first time ever, it's reasonably plausible but it's not really a big deal I don't think.

It does look like a hand and light saber though and the 4th draft script is not the never seen 5th draft (if there ever was one properly assembled as production became a bit messy and stuff did get changed from 4th draft we just do not know exactly what it was changed to and if it was ever finished)

There are numerous special effects shots that were lined up to be done that were never completed for one reason or another and I know of a few through guesswork but I cannot tell you 100% for certain but the music score often gives up where there positions are. All the live action was shot though.

My point was only that I thought it was his hand for the longest time and never had any reason to doubt it was until now. Didn't mean to start any debate on the subjective matter of how interesting or plausible it was.

Perhaps although scripted as debris, it may have been a VFX Easter Egg & never meant to be clearly identifiable as a hand & lightsaber,

Like the kitchen sink at the beginning of ROTS.

Perhaps :-)

Why would it need to be his hand?!

Yeah, it's been whatever it's been for 35 years. No one ever really complained. Everyone at some point or another was curious about what it is, but it's specific detail was never important to the scene. Luke fell, got stuck in a hopeless situation after hearing some traumatic news, and that's the point of the scene. It's him at his lowest point.

Really, who cares what is falling at that point? You're supposed to be caring about Luke and his situation in that moment.

OK ADYWAN, here is your quick composite of Luke's HAND.. I am sure you can animate this and add it to your Revisited edition  LOL  Have that one float down to the fluffy clouds.

I always believed it was Manbearpig, and that seeing such a traumatic sight is what gave Luke the shock he needed to press on after sustaining such injuries.

*This entire post is a satire and I apologize for any off-topicness it may incur.

I always thought it was something out of his belt.  But if it turned out to not be something under his belt, it would literally not affect the movie for me at all.
