team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released) — Page 88

Previously you mentioned that these would be released on dual layer DVD as well as Blu Ray compatible ISOs. Is this still the plan? I don't know about most people, but I really don't plan on getting a Blu Ray burner for my PC, but I would really like to have a physical copy of these, if at all possible.

There will be downscales of the movie available in many versions, we might make all of them, but others will provide the encodes.

Why not? Do they get all twisted-up about it or something? haha

Because it's not scanned in 4k. Read the thread.

That's not what we were talking about.  Read the rest of the forum.

How does that change the fact that the Negative 1 project isn't scanned in 4k?

I thought it was scanned in 4K and then downsampled several times to 1080p.

That's actually what I also thought and then I was told no and then yes... I am yet to get a 100% accurate answer. I was also told to read more threads and then after reading many pages, that really didn't give me a perfect answer either.

When they started the project everything was scanned at 1080p. Later, they changed their camera and later scans were done at 4k and resized to 1080p. By every account they've given, all work being done (clean-up, stabilisation, etc) is being done at 1080p and not 4k. By their descriptions, their 4k scans don't yield meaningful detail above 1080p anyway.

That makes sense. I did read this myself earlier, but I was still unsure if they were doing clean up in 4k or 1080p. You've answered my question. Thanks for the information.

It doesn't.  Nor does it change the fact that what you said had nothing to do with what we were talking about.

Actually, there might be some improvements in the 4k scans. We are looking into them. There is a definitely a difference in the replacement shots.

We are still working on the replacements shots for various reels. Since it is taking time, we are thinking about releasing a preview of Reel 5.

That reel is very clean, and the colors look very natural.

We will decide, and post more information when we reach a conclusion.

Any preview is very welcome! :-)

Having watched the last preview a few times, I'm beginning to see your point with regards to the LPP. It does have an interesting quality to it. I'm really curious about how it will look after the color correction. There's plenty of detail at least.

It looks like we are going to have shorter previews, however we have them from Reels 4,5 and 6. It will total about 10 minutes.

We will keep you posted.

The color looks great - reels 5 and 6 look quite close to the IB clips I've seen.

That reel 4 clip almost looks like the interpositive was starting to fade when this print was made...interesting.

Looking at the reel 4 pictures in particular, I'm beginning to wonder if the interpositive this LPP was struck from was already in early stages of fading in 1983 (the year that corresponds with the print's edge code).

Isn't this LPP a positive->positive dupe print?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

What would make you think that? I'd have assumed it went through IP->IN->print?

That's the usual chain, sure, but poita mentioned to me a few months back that he thinks it's a positive->positive dupe print produced independent of LFL for one of the Spanish-speaking markets.

I hesitate to say "bootleg" because it's obviously well done and doesn't deserve that term.

I just thought that this was something I missed and that it's common knowledge.

Haven't seen much IB aside from Mike's clips, but I think the color does look pretty nice here, though a bit faded in r5 and r6? I really like the look of r4. Tservo: do you mean there's a gradual fading or just that last shot of 3PO? Looks like a replacement shot, there.

The cleanup is really impressive. Only a few marks here and there. Still a little bit of flicker left. Is that beyond the scope of fixing?

Interesting theory - would still be Fox though, right?

Almost as interesting to ponder as where the anamorphic 16mm prints came from. (Possibly intended for military bases?)

What I meant was the pinkish tinge to the whole scene. It does almost look like minor, early red fade. But the clips from reels 5-6 don't look that way.

Not necessarily. Anyone with a 35mm release print can make a dupe print.

It's one more generation, of course, and any damage (including fade) would be baked-in.

Thanks for all the comments. These samples do not include replacement shots.

- At the end of the reel 4 clip, C3P0 does shift color, and that will be replaced.

- The tint and fading will be adjusted with color correction.

- All clips will have flicker reduction, stabilization and cropping applied.
