It's probably a lack of caring due to how few people actually are upset by stuff like this. Plenty of people probably think it looks sharp and crisp and some how 'more hi-def'.

My girlfriend is happy to watch 240p, out of sync movies on random video hosting sites. A colleague of mine has a very negative (1) view on physical media, though he actually believes that streaming is not only the way of the future, but equal quality. He gets confused at what 'bitrate' means.
