RTJ Soundtrack Album

Hello SW fans, I’m new here and this is my first post.

I have plenty to say about the OT/SE/DVD issue, but first I wanted to ask something about the RTJ soundtrack album.

I just bought the new 2004 CD issue of the New Hope soundtrack and a very pleased in that it is complete and the sound quality is excellent. I plan on picking up Empire and Jedi when I get the money, but there’s something that concerns me on the completeness of the Jedi album. To my understanding, the 1997 and 2004 CD issues of the New Hope and Empire soundtracks are universal, meaning that no matter what version you watch, the program on the discs remains the complete soundtrack. When looking over the Jedi soundtrack track listings for the 97 and 04 issues (same thing), I notice the same does not hold true. Just as they were in the film, “Lapti Nek” was replaced with “Jedi Rocks” and “Ewok Celebration” was replaced with “Victory Celebration”. I did research and discovered that both of the replaced songs were on the original 1983 vinyl release, and that was pretty much a highlights deal and by no means a complete soundtrack. I also found that both tracks were also available on CD at one time on a 1993 trilogy box set. The one thing I really don’t understand is the absence of the rest of the Max Rebo tracks. Where is the Sail Barge jam? Anyone who has seen the film a number of times, regardless of the version, is sure to remember it and instantly notice the omission when listening to the album. I mean, they included the Baroque Recital, so might as well include all of it if you’re going to put source music on the disk, right?

I fail to see what was going trough the compiler’s mind. I know John Williams’ score is what everyone’s in the purchase for, but why can’t we have the complete source music as well? So what is “Lapti Nek” and “Ewok Celebration” were deleted from the film, there’s plenty of space left on the disk(s) for both them and “Jedi Rocks” and “Victory Celebration”. I agree with everyone here, I can’t stand Jedi Rocks, its silly, childish and it’s almost like they threw a song and dance number into the movie. I rather it wasn’t in the film or the soundtrack at all, but as much as we all hate it, I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon. As for the other Max Rebo numbers, I just don’t understand. Usually songs are omitted from soundtrack albums because of copyright issues or space, but neither is the issue here, as its all John Williams’ work. I would much rather have had all the source music that was actually in the film instead of those archival bonus tracks they did include.

I really doubt it, but does anyone know the reason(s) why?

Well, "Lapti Nek" and "Ewok Celebration" were probably cut "because they don't exist". I treasure my dad's 1983 cassette(wish I could find the photo album) As for the Reebo track, it's possible it was just a snippet, and they felt it wasn't needed or something. The Empire OST has pieces that don't exist in the film or only in the SE(without the blasphemest looping). Also, "Victory Celebration" is completely different from the SE version. It sounds like a completely different arrangment last I heard it.

Welcom to the Boards, by the way.

That’s one theory that came to my mind before about the Sail Barge song. While the Cantina tracks on the Episode 4 soundtrack were complete recordings, I guess they recorded the minimum for the Sail Barge jam and what you hear in the movie is all there is to it. Even if that were so, I would be satisfied if they put it in on the soundtrack.

It’s a shame the other two tracks “don’t exist”. The lyrics in “Lapti Nek” that sounded something like “Jabba whooshey wonnga. WONGA!” cracked me up every time I heard it. I can still hear the original “Ewok Celebration” in my head right now. How could anyone forget it? While it’s bad enough the OT is in the "don't exist" state, it only makes the situation worse by the effects leaking on to one of the soundtrack albums.

A good site that has info on all the different issues of the trilogy soundtracks can be found here

Here is the original configeration of the Jedi Soundtrack:

1. Main Title (The Story Continues) 5:09
2. Into the Trap 2:36
3. Luke and Leia 4:43
4. Parade of the Ewoks 3:24
5. Han Solo Returns (At the Court of Jabba The Hutt) 4:07
6. Lapti Nek 2:48
7. The Forest Battle 4:01
8. Rebel Briefing 2:19
9. The Emperor 2:40
10. The Return of the Jedi 5:00
11. Ewok Celebration and Finale 7:57

Klingon_Jedi, I assume you're dad's cassette is a tape issue of this same album.

I like THIS site better for info about the releases. BTW, I own the original Polydor cd release for A NEW HOPE, and even though the sound quality is much better on the SE version, I prefer the original release because that's what I grew up with on LP.

Parrotmonkey, I would suggest tracking down the 1993 soundtrack boxset. The sound quality probably isn't quite as good as the new reissues, but it still sounds great, and the program is much more complete than the original vinyl release. I don't know if you have a decent library where you live, but I found the boxset at my library and burned copies. I simply refused to buy the SE soundtrack for it's omission of Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration and it's inclusion of Jedi Rocks and that godawful Kenny G-esque finale.

If you can't find these recordings anywhere, let me know and I can post mp3s of Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration.

Thanks for that site.

Here's what I was looking for:

Missing music from [the 1997 and 2004 soundtrack releases] of Return of the Jedi:

• Lapti Nek (film version)
• Lapti Nek (English version, "Fancy Man")
• Lapti Nek (album version)* (2:48)
• Leia's News (alternate)* (1:19)
• Ewok Celebration (film version)* (1:56)
• Ewok Celebration (album version)* (1:56)
• Jabba the Hutt (concert arrangement)**
• Max Rebo Band Instrumental Music (3:00)***
• Unused Source Music (not in film) (1:30)***

* are included on the 1993 box set
** About (1:20) of this piece was tracked into "Han Solo Returns" on the old album and box-set.
*** These selections were not included because they could not be found.

I assume Max Rebo Band Instrumental Music is the Sail Barge song. I guess the "could not be found" means the record label coulden't obtain the original master tape. I wounder how the site knows it was 3:00 long? And what's that Unused Source Music track about?

I'm pretty sure that Jabba the Hutt (concert arrangement) is on The Skywalker Symphony Orchestra, Williams Conducting (Sony SK 45947), 1990

The 97' and 04' releases of the New Hope album include 5 alternate takes of the Main Title/Rebel Blockade Runner number tacked onto the Binary Sunset alternate track as a bonus, creating a track that’s nearly 17 minutes long! If they could do that, I don’t see the reason why they couldn’t place all 9 of the above omissions at the end of the first disc of Jedi. I would be satisfied with just one version of Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration, but if there’s room, why not all?

I wonder if there’s an e-mail address where I could contact Sony Classical about perhaps getting a complete Jedi soundtrack out on the shelves that covers all 3 versions of the film. Seeing how Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration “don’t exist” and the fact that they just re-issued the album less than a month ago, such a product probably has a snowball’s chance in hell of being released.

I probably will still buy the current CD issue eventually, but it still won’t change my opinion on how the omissions damage the keepsake value.

IF YOU HAVE THE OTHER CD RELEASES THEN WHAT DOES IT MATTER ??? I CURRENTLY HAVE EVERY SW CD RELEASE. I ONLY BOUGHT THE NEW RELEASES TO KEEP MY COLLECTION COMPLETE. WHEN I LISTEN TO THE SOUNDTRACKS I USUALLY LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL BOX SET.

Well, I don’t own any previous releases, and there’s no way I could now unless I get them used. Also, it isn’t just about owning the tracks themselves, I just wondered why they can’t have one definitive release that covers all the versions of the film when it could all fit on a two disc set. Also, keep in mind the Sail Barge song was never on any release, unlike Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration.

I doubt that this will help, but that piece of music was used in the Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga. So, there is a full length recording that does exist. Unfortunately I don't know where to obtain the recording.

Of the Sail Barge song? If there's a full length track, it now makes even less sense as to why it wasen't on the album.

BTW, does anyone have an mp3 of the original Yub Nub and Lapti Nek, possibly from the 1993 Anthology? I can't seem to find these anywhere.

The Sail Barge source cues are all missing. The last time they were used was for the From Star Wars to Jedi doc.

Regarding "Lapti Nek" and "Ewok Celebration" there were two versions of each song: a film version and the album version. The film version of "Lapti Nek" has never been released, while the 1993 "Star Wars Trilogy" CD box set had both versions of "Ewok Celebration". There were several extended versions of "Lapti Nek" released on a promotional 12" 45 single. They were called the "dub" and "club" versions. They are both based on the album version.

The lyrics to "Lapti Nek" are:

Ab queck zenick fesi
Jup col im in na hiz jal, ooh.
Wa toc peg qui dos gee pif, aah.
Joc jarraz bas deg zorze zot.
Jer wih tuster mo vey

Ab queck zenick fesi
jem wih tuster mo vey
qui neb be og ezen on
wok lapti nek seb not van

Lapti nek, rat a ran wim joct co jappi qoff,

Deg zorze zot.
Jem with tuster mo vey

goc jarraz bas deg zorze zot.

Deg zorze zot,
Lapti nek, lapti nek.

Oh you know you're listening to the song right now, making sure they are correct.

Oh, and I posted those a long time ago on another board. I just found that post and cut and pasted it here. And I transcribed them from the back of the "Lapti Nek" single I bought on eBay a few years ago. It's not like I listened to the song and wrote down what I heard. That'd be sad. Sadder, at least.

Speaking of lyrics, we need some for the Ewok song too while your at it.

Now, who has the transcription for the English translation? The English was written before it was translated to Huttese. Some of this is heard in "From Star Wars to Jedi" if memory serves me correctly. It was a work-out song, like Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" which was a monster hit between ESB and ROTJ for those who remember.

My bones have started glowing
The time has come for showing
That I'll shape you up and work you out

Lapti Nek

You've got to move your soul
You've got to feel the heat

[or something like]

My body feels excitin'
My soul is synthesizin'
My whole frame is jumpin'

I'm workin' out and havin' fun

Lapti Nek
Gotta move your body, Gotta move your feet
Lapti Nek
Gotta move your feet as you walk the street
Lapti Nek...
