The cannons are indeed a fun addition. However, I'm not a fan of certain things. For instance, the river, while nice in that pawns gain additional powers, but keeping the already extremely limited elephants to one side of the board is an annoyance. Consider that the elephant would be restricted to 14 cells on a 90 cell board, but with that restriction it now has access to a mere 7! Also, the elephant and horse cannot jump, though the game from which xiang qi descended did allow it for both. Also, the limited number of pawns annoys me. Korean chess is similar and yet different, and I think I will like it better. I like certain advantages, most especially the elephant move, the lack of a river, and more versatility in king and guard moves. However, the cannon is weaker, so I'm not sure how much that affects the whole thing.
I have to be honest, I like the king and guard restriction to the palace, however. It makes for more of a challenge to defend, and the restriction on kings facing each other is an interesting addition as well. In any case, I'm pretty sure this is still my least favorite of the Big 3, but I am enjoying the game nevertheless.
