Yeah, just discovered this. I'm stuck with the bad 4K 5.1 downsampled mono track on my blu-ray.

The one thing I’ve hated with the 5.1 mix is when Ecstasy Of Gold plays and some point in the scene theirs this strange phasing effect. I never notice it on the old DVD edition with the american cut. I’m not aware if there was a 5.1 with that version . The extended I noticed it and it bothers me to this day. What the hell the sound mixer was thinking when making the extended 5.1 mix is dumb. It defiantly doesn’t have that effect on the soundtrack. I just recently began a craze with mono version of old movies I love. My intro to mono was The Beatles music. Yea its not film but same field . Some songs had different sounds or added things the stereo mixes didn’t have. Like a double track vocal, longer fade, etc. . I own the Star Wars Despecialized and I gave the mono mix a try. I’ve read and heard things how it totally different from the original 5.1 or 2.0. To me It was like hearing a Beatles song in mono for the first time, it was incredible I notice every single bit that was in the mono I’ve never heard before, having grown up with Star Wars and watching it alot. I plan to do this with my 007 movies to being the blu ray has the mono mixes. TGTB&TU is my #6 in my top 10 all time list and my all time favorite Western. I’ll defiantly Private Message you for the Mono Mix. It amazes me what fans do vs what studios do.

I have looked into the different editions of the 4K-scanned GB&U version and its Mono track issue. So here are the facts:
There was a first pressing of the 4K-scanned GB&U (V1) by MGM/FOX. The authoring date is April 1st, 2014. This is the version released with the US “Man with no name trilogy” box as well as the UK steelbook edition. This contains the faulty English mono (downmix from 5.1 with replaced gunshots).
The inner ring number for the UK steelbook version of it is: L0 FW15813BDSE/1 V01 PLA; L1 FW15813BDSE/2.2 V01 GLM
Then there was a (silent) second pressing (V2) by MGM/FOX. This one contains the correct English mono track (not a downmix) in Dolby Digital / 192 kbps. The authoring date is May 31st, 2014. This is the version released as a single disc in the USA; also, the German amaray version I purchased in 2015 contains this version.
The inner ring number (from the German disc) is: L0 FW 15813BDSE/1.7 V02 AYJ; L1 FW15813BDSE/2.6 V02 BOP
I suppose that makes my track obsolete. On the other hand, as my track uses downmixed audio in the extended scenes, I might update it to use the proper mono from V2 for the extended scenes, plus the LD audio for theatrical scenes. If there is need for it, of course.

Were we ever able to confirm what exactly that BD mono is or where it came from? I wrote Fox a letter asking about it and if I could exchange my trilogy set for the corrected disc only to get a standard studio generic shut up and go away letter.

As far as I know, in the US, the faulty mono was released in the trilogy box, and the corrected mono in a single release amaray.

I would say that your track muxed to the Italian Mondo version is by far the best way to go with this important film. Improving your track even further for the extended scenes would be greatly appreciated!

I’m trying to find the French Blu-ray with the new pressing (if it even exists) and therefore with the original mono. I bought the movie for the second time a few days ago (this time from Amazon) but is appears that the number thingy on the disc “FW FR 15813BDSE” is the same than the one on the disc I bought 2 years ago in a mall).
The release dates on both Amazon pages are different, so could it mean that the first link in my post (which says September 1, 2014, the second link says May 21, 2014) is a new pressing? Or does a French release with the original just not exist? Thank you if you can enlighten me 😄

The thing I love about this particular project is that it allows me to watch the original Italian cut of the movie, as intended by Leone, but with English audio. As far as I know, this is an experience only granted by this project and its Mondo-sync version.
