Is your 1997 Jabba icon meant to be ironic, or picked at random? Just wondering...

Can I please ask who administrates czech dubbing please?

The 1995 dubbing is much more better. Plus it was digitally remastered in 97. Not always the oldest is the best.

Am I breaking some rule? I couldn't do that on purpose, it's not in my character.

But given your finite selection of choices, I'd say ironic.

Why do you ask? If you want the 1995 dubbing, I have a copy synced to the PAL GOUT DVD if it helps (that's for all 3 movies)

Harmy chose the Czech dub (not sure the criteria of this one over the 95 one).  If you can convince him to drop the current dub in favor of the 95 dub, I'm sure it'll make the next release.  But that's a big "if".

He has mentioned that the Czech SE dubs are technically better, but neither he nor I are interested in including despecialized SE dubs when there are already available dubs, even if lesser-quality, for the unaltered trilogy.  One reason for this is that it's impossible to completely despecialize the audio, so original mixes simply always sound more authentic, and the second reason is that there is a certain nostalgia factor for the old dubs--to watch them as you first saw them as a child.  For languages with multiple original dubs, there's always a bit of subjectivity in picking which is best.  Hell, there are like fifteen Russian dubs (slight exaggeration), at some point you just need to pick one and run with it.

All of this doesn't mean you aren't free to add your own audio if the one we pick doesn't suit you.  You can't please everyone, and I think Harmy and I also share the opinion that one dub in each language is typically adequate for global accessibility, and that including several audio options for any given language is up to another project (much like the Krieg der Sterne/German project does).

Yeah - as far as I know, there never was a 1995 Czech VHS release and there were no TV airings of ESB and ROTJ before 2002, which was of course the SE, so those "1995" dubs are likely the ones that were used (and first appeared) on the '97SE VHS release, so I think they only exist in the '97SE cut form and since there were some dialog changes, you can't really use them for the original without patching them up with the old dubs.

Plus the '97SE dubs had awful translation.

Not at all! It just leaped out at me when I saw it. I'd forgotten we have stock user icons. ;)

A small correction/explanation - the czech 1995 dubs were done for CT1 (I know that because I taped them and watched them pretty often :-) ) and not for VHS. The same dubbing(s) were used for the 1997 SE, they dubbed just the new scenes with (if I remember correctly) the same actors. So they exist both for the original  cuts and the 97 SEs

Neat.  Well if you've got these already synced and Harmy does indeed deem them to be better than the ones we use now (i.e. if they don't actually have the bad translations he mentioned in the 97 dubs)... out with the old, in with the new.

What's your opinion on the quality differences?

I'll be diplomatic and I say that I fully understand why Harmy doesn't like it :-) The actors are doing a good job but the translation sucks

Ah, the initial complaint may have been more of an audio quality complaint rather than a translation/voices complaint anyway--i.e. yes, VHS audio isn't so great.  If that's the case, this is just the Brazilian dub debate all over again.

FWIW, my personal priorities for dubs are:

1) authenticity of the recording--SE dubs are only considered of no other dubs exist

2) quality of the translation--only considered if there are multiple non-SE dubs to choose from

3) quality of the voice acting--only considered if there are multiple non-SE dubs with good translations (we should be so lucky!)  Not really applicable to voiceover dubs.

4) audio quality--only even considered if the top three factors are tied.  This is what drives me to prefer the Russian voiceover-style dub for Star Wars over the traditional acting-style dub, which has dreadful audio quality but seems decent in every other respect.

I really don't know how well my priorities on this matter line up with Harmy's, and I just give him the dubs I choose, which he's free to use or discard as he sees fit.  But obviously there's a lot of room for disagreement--if your top priority is crystal clear audio, you're going to pick different dubs than I do.

If your priority is crystal clear audio, you're going to pick the Czech Dub that was made in 2011 for the BD.

I'm still unclear on where the non-SE version of the 1995 CZ dub would have come from - I don't think ESB and ROTJ were shown on TV here before 2002 when CT1 showed The SE Trilogy and TPM to tie in with the premiere of AOTC - I could be wrong though and I can't find the date of the Czech TV premiere anywhere.

Still, the translation of that dub is truly horrible, so I'd rather stick to the 1992 one.

Just wanted to say thanks Harmy for your outstanding Despecialized achievement. Cannot wait for ROTJ.

Cheers,

"Sometimes themes come very painfully after hours of holding my head in my hands at the piano. Days can go by and I'll think it is never going to come. Then I'll sit down at the piano and it sort of pops into my mind; after two weeks of frustration, it just appears out of nowhere. Other times, I might think about a theme for a character and get it straight off. It is a strange and mysterious and frustrating process, almost impossible to describe." - John Williams (1979)

Thank you so much for your hard work on Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.  Thanks to you, I was able to have DVD-5 versions and enjoy the unaltered movies in perfect restoration with proper color, the way movies of this historical importance deserve to be restored.

I cannot wait for the ROTJ 2.0 DVD-5!  Best,

TM

Firstly, thanks for the work done on IV and V.

How can I get the despecialized version of VI? I can't find a torrent anywhere. (I'm new here)

Hey Harmy!  Great work on ANH and TESB!  I can't tell you how happy I am to be able to watch and enjoy such an incredible restoration of the Original Theatrical Star Wars Saga.  Recently, I introduced my wife to Star Wars and because of you she got to experience the original films as they were.

Thanks again for all your hard work!  I hope it is a fun challenge for you to learn and make possible all that you are doing!  Very much looking forward to ROTJ!!!

What are the shots in all three movies that have no better source than the GOUT?

Have you forgotten about the Team Negative 1 project? They have given clips to Harmy, you know.

Of course, but Harmy recently said that the GOUT will still be used even if the team gets him everything on his 35mm wish list. Maybe there are just little things, throughout, like cropping that he can't bug negative-1 for so much footage?

Hey, so I've got a question that's pretty inconsequential when all is said and done but it's something I've wondered about. What's up with the chapter breaks in Jedi? I first got the DE AVCHD discs from a public torrent that had an the Italian audio track added in, and I assumed that whoever had made it had done something weird while altering the disc, but after joining myspleen I downloaded it again from there and it's got the same 27 chapters instead of 50 like the other two, and they seem to sometimes land in strange places. Were the 1.0 releases of Star Wars and Empire structured like this? And will Jedi 2.0 have chapters more in line with the other 2.0 discs? It really doesn't affect my enjoyment of the movie at all since fast forward works perfectly well and I tend to watch the film start-to-finish anyway, but I've found that discrepancy curious ever since I noticed it.
