Thanks for the clarification about the SE versions. The original effects were very simplistic, and error prone.

The SE ones are much cleaner, and more effective.

However, they did have to change some details in order to composite them.

Was just looking through the latest preview.

That weird flickering is back. As the Slave 1 zooms to the right of the screen in silent pursuit of the Millennium Falcon there's an odd halo of flickering stars that surrounds the ship. In the following shot inside the cockpit the strange flickering continues with a bunch of the stars out the window.

Comparing this scene with the Grindhouse edition and none of this strange flickering is to be found. Again, it looks like strange artifacting from an automated repair tool.

Can anyone else verify this?

Speaking of the Slave1, I have a question: in the shot right after Boba Fett says "Put Captain Solo in the cargo hold", I seem to remember that in the GOUT the foreground (Slave1, Boba, soldiers) is moving, while the background is still. If it isn't a stabilization issue, is it a compositing error present in every print?

The starfield shots are always very tricky. They are done with a combination of cleanup tools. But there is manual work in there also.

Those shots will be refined further.

Forgive me if this idea has been discussed before but here's what I think.

Why not put out a raw source (by raw I mean grain, scratches, uncropped, un-stabilized, no sound synchro - even LOG source if that's how it was captured) @ a good bitrate MP4, pieced together from the best reels and let people work on their own versions?

No need for 4K, could be 1080 or 2K to make the sources acceptable for sharing.

Kind of a Star Wars open source project.

The ESB Deconstructed files, although not the original source files, is basically that. Quite a few people (about 70) have downloaded that.

You might want to look into that. We have also posted sample files for cleanup, but have not heard of anyone attempting their own projects, or work on any of them. There was one person that did some color correction to it, but that was only on still frame images.

Currently, the main focus for most projects is on laserdiscs, and enhancing GOUT, and other sources which are easier to work with.

I do have a lightly processed encode of ESB but I haven't released it as I didn't feel it merited release on one of the private trackers and didn't want to use TPB.

A few of my friends have downloaded it though.

"Right now the coffees are doing their final work." (Airi, Masked Rider Den-o episode 1)

Good to hear that attempts to make your own version are there. The only ones we know of that use film, are Harmy, and Adywan. Other than that, it's laserdiscs.

Please comment, if you have been previewing the reels. There are still some fixes that need to be made:

============================================

- The tail of Reel 1 still needs work, in the last few frames.

- Starfield shots

- In some of the snowspeeder shots, rocks disappear and reappear briefly.

- The entire Luke vision with Darth Vader, has a lot of dark spots, and still needs cleaning.

If you notice scenes with a lot of noticeable noise, or grain, those will probably remain the same. But if there is dirt in them, please mention which scenes by description and time (min:sec).

Thanks

The red blotches and areas will not be corrected, as that is inherent to these clips. We currently don't have the resources to do too much further correction, especially when we have a superior print that will be restored.

There, are many, many more areas of improvement needed. We only mentioned the main ones that are still being addressed.

If you you look further, there are quite a few scenes. No one has really mentioned any of the other areas, besides starfields.

 I'll give it another watch-through and try to give more comments on some of the other scenes.

But one question: why put so much effort into this print (s) when you've got one that's in much better shape? I'm sure you'll need it to patch a few things up, but it sounds like quite a lot of time and energy is going into it in general. Perhaps I don't understand your workflow correctly.

This looks great, excellent detail and natural filmic look. I think the single best thing about it is the lack of artificiality, like you get in an overprocessed dvd, for example. Nice work! :)

If there a superior print to this that the actual full restoration will be derived from, then I can only imagine how good that will look. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Different Team members work on different portions. Most are concentrating on Star Wars currently. These cleanup efforts on ESB are the results of testing on machines in our renderfarm.

Its not going to take to much effort to finish the rest and fine tune, but we don't want to allocate too many resources to it.

Update on the status:

===========================

Reel 3 is 95% complete and cleaned.

Reels 5, and 6 have very little damage, and should be done next week.

Reel 2 will be worked on after that.

===========================

Reel 1 had more cleanup done to the crawl, and more scratches eliminated.

===========================

Since there is not much interest in seeing the whole reel, we will just post a few highlights from it.

Here is the Vader and Emperor scene:

Status update on ESB V3.1

==========================

Switched to work on Reel 2, 80% complete.

This was to get the reel with the most work out of the way, and to be able to quickly finish the final 2 reels.

Also, once Reel 2 is done, we can assemble a test workprint of all the Reels which should be about 90% complete. This will not have color correction done to it.

If you're interested in checking it out early, leave us a comment.

We'll put out a preview workprint if enough people are interested. Currently, even the preview reels have not got any comments or reviews.

Just to be clear: this is still just a cleaned up version of the ESB grindhouse version, right? because this looks pretty darn good!

Definitely interested in any kind of preview.

I see several comments on MySpleen. Many people would be interested in a preview workprint, I'm sure of it. I certainly would be.

Half of those comments are our own replies, the rest are just thank you's, and not any real content.

We haven't had any comments about scenes, artifacts, issues, or anything else, for Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars had more comments, but all those issues have been addressed already.

Which leads us to gauge the interest in Empire Strikes Back is not as high.

------------------------------------------------

Yes. This is just clean up of the print.
