PM sent.  Yes, this project has complete trilogy subtitles for all supported languages--but they may not have existed when a particular preservation was made, so may not have been included at the time.

Hello CatBus,

Thanks for all the work you have put into this project. Would to be possible to get OOT subtitles in Japanese?

Still (unsurprisingly) having trouble finding a printer willing to make a T-shirt out of this image.  PM me if you've worked with anyone who is a little more friendly to "fan art" than your average commercial printing outfit.  All those T-shirts you see at conventions have to come from somewhere...

Hi CatBus, can you send me a link for the Dutch subtitles, as well as English (for my own enjoyment) and Slowak (for my family in Bratislava)?

Author

PM sent.  We don't have Slovak subtitles at the moment.  Czech is probably your closest bet.  The language that looks like Slovak in my signature line is actually Slovenian.

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)

Nope, Slovenian doesn't sound like Slovak :-) Which reminds me that I started the translation ages ago and never finished it, sorry for that.

But yeah, Czech subtitles are the correct choice for the family in Bratislava

It's never too late.  Slovak is in the unenviable position of having subtitles only for the prequels, and no language options at all for the OT, other than to use the Czech options.  That has simply got to change ;)

If you need new template files, let me know.

So Slovak doesn't even have subtitles for the special editions?

Nobody sang The Bunny Song in years…

At least on the Blu-rays pittrek bought in Slovakia, only the prequels have Slovak subs.  I should mention that Slovaks have a long history of watching Czech-language film and television and it's not really a big stretch, but still, the principle of the thing is that it's just wrong to subtitle only the prequels.  I believe the languages of the Baltic states are in the same predicament.

FWIW, I believe if I added Slovak, that'd leave Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, and Irish before I'd support every official EU language.  And that would be a pretty cool milestone indeed.

Hi CatBus! Great work you've been doing! Could I send you PM for obtaining for the current Subtitle set for ROTJ ?

(I read that asking for links was against rules)

I'm not having much luck with a "MySpleen" invite!

On another note, my current set of subs for the first 2 films say:

Unverified subtitles (may need significant improvements):
Mandarin (Simplified), American Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Korean, Turkish, Romanian, Croatian,Greek, and Bulgarian.

Is this still the case or are these subs dated?

Thanks!  -Faith

I thought I recognized your foul stench when I entered this forum!

PM sent.

Yes, that's all very outdated.  All of the languages you listed are now based on the official translations (except American Spanish, which is derived from the official Castilian translations and converted by one of our members).

I don't really mark subs as unverified anymore, since that's not really a useful quality description anymore.  That's not to say that any given translation doesn't still have room for improvement, but things should be much better with the current version.

EDIT: Oh yeah, you can always check the first post in this thread for the current status.

Thanks for the info and everything!

Being here in Texas it was the American Spanish I was most interested in.

I think I'll have one of my Mexican friends have a look at this, I'll bet they are more used to having to muddle through reading Castilian, but I really have never asked! lol

Hello Catbus and thanks for what looks like some amazing work. I'm wondering if you can send me a link for the Swedish subtitles?

I found out today that my little niece had never watched the original trilogy and i'm not gonna ruin her childhood with poor CGI nor letting her think for a second that Greedo even had a chance.

So it whould be super appreciated if you could help me out with that :)

Thanks again.

Hello CatBus,

Thank you so much for all your work.  Could you please PM me a link for the OOT Japanese subtitles?

Author

PM sent.  As you've probably read, the Japanese full subtitles for ROTJ are graphical-only, so you're not going to find an SRT file for those.

I cannot thank you enough for your work, CatBus. It's much appreciated!

Could you please send me the subtitles for the OOT in French?

Thanks in advance :)

Argh!  I have discovered a terrible, terrible truth (er, at least I think it's the truth...).  The Blu-ray format supports only 32 subtitles in PGS format.  It supports a few more than that in text format, but there actually is a hard limit either way and it is not merely the bandwidth used by those subtitles.  Sorry it took so long to discover this, but it's not very well documented and not many discs even approach that limit.

So, if you want to make a truly universal preservation, it looks like MKV is the format you should use (I still recommend graphical subtitles though).  For a Blu-ray, you're going to really have to cut those subtitles down, or make different editions including different sets of languages.  Sorry again that I didn't see this earlier... I'll update the Project Threepio README to make sure there's plenty of warning for anyone with such a plan.

Project files have been updated to version 8.3 (original post has been updated as well). Please PM me for the temporary download links until the files are available in a more permanent location.

Rough summary of changes:

- Added new language: Malay.
- Improved Icelandic subtitles (thanks to spaceghost)
- Fixed a potentially big problem in the README: Added warnings that the Blu-ray format is limited to 32 PGS subtitle tracks (tsMuxerGUI allows you to add more and create a non-compliant disc, so an explicit warning was really needed).  On a related note, I also fixed glaring oversight: the README now includes instructions for how to mux subtitles into an MKV (which AFAIK has no such limitation).  That's graphical SUP subtitles, of course--using SRT files directly is still discouraged as anything but a last resort.
- More improvements to text layout for RTL scripts (Arabic, Persian/Farsi, Hebrew)
- Created new instructions and scripts to easily allow subtitles to be synchronized to video using another frame reference (e.g. PAL GOUT, Puggo 16mm [PG & PSB], Team Negative 1 [ESB Grindhouse]), and allowing subtitles to be shifted for optimal placement within different-sized video frames.  Combined with the existing scripts that allow Project Threepio to accomodate preservations without burnt-in alien subtitles, this should allow Project Threepio to be easily incorporated into any past, present, or future Star Wars preservation.
- Improvements to the Star Wars mono mix support. The English SRT file was improved, and a script was created to convert subtitle files that were designed for the stereo mix into files that better align with the audio timing of the mono mix (but they will still be missing subtitles for audio unique to the mono mixes).  I have no plans for more comprehensive support for the mono mixes, or any support at all for the 70mm/8mm Empire audio mix, dubs, or later audio revisions.
- Project Threepio is branching out into the apparel department. Included in the resources folder are some high-resolution (~300dpi at 10") preservation-themed images appropriate for use in creating T-shirts, or anything you like. Previews of these images can be found in the first post.

As you may have noticed, we're still missing our two big-ticket items--Japanese SRT files for ROTJ, and subtitle re-timing to match the burnt-in subtitles for Despecialized ROTJ 2.x (which will presumably match theatrical timing).  Enough important changes had accumulated to warrant a release without these long-desired items.  Never fear, they are still on my radar.

I just made a few quick changes, no change to the version number because 8.3 hadn't been widely distributed yet.  So there's a "new" 8.3 out there.

Changes: Fixed a small error in the French ESB subs (thanks to coolman756), changed some of the new (T-shirt) graphics files--in particular, the "May the Force be with you" in many languages had the complete wrong line in Finnish.  I've double-checked and everything is now at least the correct line, if not necessarily the most perfect translation.  Thanks to Karoliina for catching that.

Hey CatBus, would it be possible to get an srt of the English subtitles?

Also sorry if I missed, but why are the Japanese subtitles not able to be put into an srt? I understand that they're graphical but how hard is it to convert? I could do it myself if it's relatively simple.

PM sent.

The complete story of the Japanese subs is scattered over many posts in this thread, so I guess I'll collect them all in one spot.

First off, I always recommend graphical subtitles over SRT files.  SRT files have the advantage of being small, but you lose the font, size, positioning, and layout information you get with the graphical subtitles.  Even once we finally have Japanese SRT files for ROTJ, I wouldn't recommend anyone actually use them, but instead use the new graphical files derived from them.

That said, the current graphical files for ROTJ are upscaled SD-quality graphics, so they are not as sharp as the others, and they do look a little dated.  We have OCR software that can turn pretty much any graphical subtitle into equivalent text, but with many errors requiring manual correction.  We have had a project going on called Operation Eyestrain in which people are going through the files that have non-Western characters and manually correcting them character-by-character, usually not knowing the language in question (Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Hebrew), and in one special case, by someone who actually knows the language in question (Japanese).

Japanese is special in a few ways.  First off, the original GOUT-based Japanese subs make heavy use of Furigana, which is something that can't be copied in a usable fashion directly into a text file.  You could leave the Furigana out, of course, but that often leaves you with a pretty inadequate translation.  Also, there are some translation problems in the files themselves--for example, Return of the Jedi is translated as Revenge of the Jedi--historically interesting but not really a good translation.

For that reason, the Japanese SRT files aren't just a direct transcription of the GOUT subtitles, but are instead a re-translation, using the GOUT subtitles as a template.  I'm really quite happy with the work our translator has done on the first two movies, and I'm willing to wait to get subtitles from the same translator, making the same stylistic choices, etc, for the best consistency between films.  Right now, our translator is crazy busy with real life stuff, but still willing and able to do the job.  Since I have no real deadline other than Harmy's next ROTJ release, I'm happy to wait some more.

That said, if things go sideways and our original translator can't do it anymore, I am keeping a mental tally of other offers for help ;)
