The difference is indeed quite stunning. Makes me wonder why you use the LPP in the first place? The replacement shots appear to have far more depth, clarity, and detail.

The whole point of the project is listed in the first post.

This is a preservation and restoration of the Spanish LPP print.

Replacement shots are from an Eastman print, corrected. They are being used to replace shots that are too dark, or lack clarity.

Sorry, then I misunderstood the first post, because the way I read it is that you wanted to preserve a 35 mm theatrical version of Star Wars, and that the Spanish LPP was one of the means and not a goal in and of itself.

That being said, the Eastman print does seem in far better condition, but I could be mistaken as we've only seen tiny portions of it.

Don't feel bad about misunderstanding the first post, we can't even read it.

Every Eastman print we'e seen is faded, and most have a lot of damage.

Even the IB Tech prints have a lot of damage.

LPP vs Tech is a philosophical debate. Both have different characteristics. Some will always prefer the merits of one over the other.

The LPP is the rarest, one of a kind print, as far as we know, and has some shots with better color retention, and more detail in many shots, compared to any other print.

There are shots in the LPP which contain more detail than the Bluray. Especially shots with smoke, explosions, and the battle scenes from Reel 6, which exhibit a lot of smearing.

Well now I can see why those two guys were so upset that the reel change markers aren't being erased...seeing it at the end of this preview was like a Storm Trooper pulling me over and saying "Sorry buddy, joy ride's over." ;)

Personally, I think it looked amazing on the Tantive, but the stuff on Tatooine looked a bit rough.

It's supposed to look that way, note discussion on "pantyhose" and "soft focus".

My apologies for reporting in that late.

I've just seen the preview and I've really enjoyed it. I can't wait to see the next preview to see what kind of improvements will be made over the current one we received. :)

That new clip looks great, although interesting to see that the final shot of Leia and the stormtroopers almost has a magenta tint!

Author

There has been no color correction done yet.

This print is an LPP print, which means low fade positive print.

All the other Eastman prints have a dark red tint to them, we have posted an 11 minute sample of Reel 5 which shows that.

This is a thread of awesomeness, indeed!

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

The preview will be up on Myspleen, check back later. We will also have separate download links for Star Wars, and Empire Strikes Back for those that only want to get those, or already have the preview.

We'll let you know when the download links are ready. These will be up for a limited time, whereas the torrent will stay up.

Star Wars

---------------------

As you can imagine, it's taken a few years of hard work to get to this point, we currently have about 90%+ of the movie cleaned, and are finalizing the rest of the clips and replacement shots.

The LPP was already a hybrid of Eastman prints (for the Crawl, and also the Han Shoots First scene), so we are only enhancing some of the shots that look very dark, or don't have enough detail. This is mainly the shots with starfields and a few others. Possibly some interior sandcrawler shots, and Luke at nighttime.
