Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released) — Page 41

Author
Time

The cleanup on the Grindhouse version continues:

==============================

Reel 1 - 80% of first pass

Reel 2 - 50% of first pass

Reel 3 - 50% of first pass

Reel 4 - 90% of first pass

Reel 5 - 50% of first pass

Reel 6 - 50% of first pass

We anticipate a new workprint for V2 in a few weeks, it won't look much like the Grindhouse with all the cleanup.

It will come out after we are done with Star Wars.

Can you explain to me what part of the process the "first pass" is? And the other parts of the process as well too? I keep seeing these posts from you guys but I don't have much background in film or film restoration/scanning so I'm kind of lost.

It's just a percentage of how much work on the cleaning is done:

Another update:

==============================

Reel 1 - 90% of first pass

Reel 2 - 50% of first pass

Reel 3 - 80% of first pass

Reel 4 - 90% of first pass

Reel 5 - 50% of first pass

Reel 6 - 50% of first pass

Once everthing's at 100%, we can work on assembling a good workprint for review, and then release.

We will be releasing the previews for Reels 1 and 4 of the cleaned version of the Grindhouse for everyone to check out.

More details will be forthcoming.

Here are shots from the cleaned Reel 1, with Luke in the medical area:

==========================================

Video Clip:

==================================

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/k3gkCnmEQPpsc9bFYf4

NOTES:

============================

 - No further color correction done

- Still partially cropped

- Mostly dark dirt cleanup, still some light spots

- Glue frames were not cleaned

It's about 90% complete.

Depending on what people think, we will only be doing previews for Reels 1 and 4, and possibly 3.

We really don't have time to put up the rest currently.

All of these will be bundled with the Star Wars Reel 1 preview.

 Really nice. What do you mean no 'further' color correction? I ask because the color looks great.

I don't always notice glue frames, but they're especially obvious in this scene after each shot. Will be nice once they're cleaned up. Still need to do gate weave removal I assume? Obviously it's just a preview and it's through dailymotion. The image is obviously clear and in focus, but the compression makes it hard to tell what the grain will look like. It's there, but shows up patchy and flickery this way.

Anyway, if the rest of the cleanup preview is of this caliber, I'm excited to see it.

One note about the color correction: the first closeup of Luke seems to have different color timing than the subsequent ones. Don't have the film on hand to see how consistent it normally is, though.

The clip is from the Color Corrected version of the Grindhouse release, and it might be adjusted later on.

If you compare a small section of the FUJI print here:

=================================

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Team-Negative1-The-Empire-Strikes-Back-1980-35mm-Theatrical-Version-Release-Details-and-Updates/post/773768/#TopicPost773768

You will see that, the other Fuji print has better colors, but more grain, and more dirt currently.

We still have to decide how to integrate segments from the best parts of the previous print with the best one.

Unfortunately, this is a just a quick correction, we currently don't have time to allocate to a more thorough clean-up because we are concentrating on Star Wars.

Once you see the full reels, you will get a better idea. About 90% of the major dirt, dust and marks are cleaned up.

Team Negative 1, is this the same as the Grindhouse version from Spleen (cleaned up and color correceted)?

Anyway, I'm REALLY loving all this! :)

The newest previews look fantastic! So nice to see the grain in Empire! It gives me goosebumps seeing this. You guys are doing quite amazing work, keep it up and know that we all truly appreciate it and look forward to the final presentation down the road.

Thanks for all the comments, and compliments.

In a few weeks, you'll be able to see about 40 minutes from the 2 reels (1 and 4), if there are more requests, we will post one final reel after that (Reel 3).

We'll see how it goes. We're not looking for suggestions or details on it. It will just be completed as is and released when we get around to it. Probably after Star Wars is done.

This is being done on the side by one of the members, so it's up to their schedule.

Take your time guys, this looks fantastic!

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

That cleaned clip looks so nice.  Warms my heart it does.

Much like the Head of Reel 3 was an improvement from the previously posted clip:

Here is an update on the Bounty Hunter scene, you can see the original clip with damage comparison here:

Here is the newly updated clip, where some glue frames have also been cleaned along with further refinements:

This clip is 2min:30sec long, and shows the Star Destroyer chasing the Millenium Falcon. The starfields look great.

There is still some minor light specks.

Those matte lines... I've never witnessed them that I can recall. I'm guessing they were only in the very original theatrical release? Awesome.

Yes, the original matte lines and boxes are visible in a lot of the shots.

==========================================

You can see a lot more in the ESB deconstructed raw version.

So is the cleaned up Grindhouse going to be the official ESB release, or is that a separate project?

This cleanup and restoration is a separate project. Mostly, it arose due to convenience, and as a test of the cleanup to show the results to people. This was on the side, so as not to be a distraction away from the restoration of Star Wars.

The best preservation will be the one using the FUJI print which is slightly faded and has the least noise and artifacts.

That will be done on it's own timeline, and by different members.

Ultimately the source will be in 4k, and downscaled, due to practical reasons. The same will be done with Return of the Jedi. We will not be releasing Raw scans for any of the films, because it's too unwieldy to distribute.

These will be the highest quality restorations of the movies to date. Since there is only one other project that will be working on them at a later point.

We do not have a timeframe for the releases yet. However, we are expecting to complete Star Wars first (possibly a few more months), and Empire Strikes Back will come after that.

If there is a good response, we will also post Reel 3 when it is ready.
