Oh, wait, I already did that. Never mind, I'll just go to that board.
EDIT: Wait, is it not the AMPSDeux board?

Alright, where do I subscribe to this damn thing?
Make an account on Reddit and then send a PM to me (/u/AntcuFaalb) and I'll let you in.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Just to clarify, AMPS has moved to the fanres.com forum.
AMPSdeux at reddit hasn't been used in awhile.

True, but I thought you decided to stay there instead of moving to FanRes. Should I direct people to FanRes from now on?

We've been too busy to post anything there. It's a good archive.
But, you can refer fanres.com, we are not a part of that yet.

So am I past the window for watching this preview? If not, where do I go for this thing?
There is a bunch of stuff that looks a little weird, and I don't think it is a compression artefact.
Mostly in high contrast areas, like R2 here against the background, it is like he has after-images to the left and right of him. Any idea what this is?

It looks almost like poorly-aligned stacked sources, although I'm pretty sure TN1 isn't using a source-stacking method for their restoration, so I really can't tell quite what it is. It's like ghosting or something.
We'll check it out. We aren't using stacked sources, so most likely it is from compression.

We are working on the second preview with the replacement shots. This will be the last preview for awhile.
This current one will expire in a couple of days.

That screenshot also looks extremely blurred. Is that due to fading of the LPP print? I thought LPP was supposed to be low fade.

That ghosting is probably on the original print, because you can also see it on the GOUT. It is just much clearer here...

It's probably not even really ghosting, but just stuff in the shadow that's behind r2d2 that somewhat looks like ghosting, but isn't.
Here's a clearer picture:

I can still see it in this pic as well. The "ghosting" follows R2's shoulder joints on both sides.

I see what you mean but to me it looks more like some stuff that's behind R2, in the shadow of the sandcrawler. But it's very faint and hard to distinguish.
This is really cool! :) I think everyone understands that this is an early preview, so definitely not final quality and I'm sure the best possible compression methods will be used later, and it's so great seeing this from real 35mm film. :) A huge thanks to the team and everyone who helped get things to this point!
I remember when the original thread for this idea was started. There was a lot of enthusiasm from all the Star Wars fans, and intense back and forth discussion of the practical realities of actually doing this, but it looked like it was going to be awfully hard to make it happen. Well guess what, they actually pulled this off, haha! Way to go, guys! :) There's certainly a lot left to do, but this is getting close for real now. I think I can speak on behalf of all even semi-serious Star Wars fans when I say that we owe you guys for going to such effort to get us here. :)
The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.
Here's the same frame for the GOUT enhanced with super resolution:

Here it also seems just some stuff in the shadows.

No, it is happening in a lot of scenes from the preview that have bright against dark, I just picked that one as an example, it isn't background stuff.
Not a complaint or anything, just interested as to what is causing it, or if it is in the print due to a lens issue or similar.

We're glad to get to this point also in the restoration. We know there will definitely be a private screening when the time comes.
Also, we should have the other 2 movies ready in preview versions, that would make a good marathon.

Could you show another example? As I don't have access to the preview. Does it show on your scans as well?
Ghosting is of course something that could very well happen in those days as the design and coatings of the lenses from that era probably weren't as sophisticated as they are nowadays. Ghosting can indeed happen in lenses while photographing bright objects, but from my knowledge, when it does, the "ghost" usually appears mirrored horizontally and vertically from the center of the frame, not laterally from the object in the frame. The only thing I can think of that would be able to cause that kind of ghosting would be if maybe there was a piece of glass in front of the print.
One other thing that could cause ghosting is if they were shooting through a sheet of glass or perspex to protect the lens.
Weren't Tatooine scenes shot so that the resulting images were blurried for a "romantic" look? It's probably that.
The Original Trilogy’s Timeline Reconstruction: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Implied-starting-date-of-the-Empire-from-OT-dialogue/post/786201/#TopicPost786201
The Tatooine scenes were shot with a "pantyhose" filter, not sure what it is, if it's a filter or really a pantyhose. Couldn't it explain these weird artifacts?
Yeah, there's definitely some type of "soft focus" effect going on. That probably also explains why C-3PO's reflections are so extreme in some the Tatooine shots...
We are still getting the Preview for Reel 1 with the replacement shots ready.
We will be sharing the current preview, and a better encoding of a dark sequence, along with a few replacement shots.
This will be bundled with the 2 Reel Preview of cleaned Grindhouse of Empire Strikes Back.
More details when we are ready to release them.
