Idea & Info: Cinerama 70mm '2001' preservation. Is it possible? — Page 9

Usually, no one ever likes being told what to do. At least that's been my experience.

I thought I could work around attitude and meanness, but I'll just have to ignore it and cease interest in some of this stuff. I'll just purchase a few copies of this version to see for myself, which I didn't want to do because it still might not answer the question. You guys have been really mean and I hope that puts a smile on your face because then you would be 100% nasty and mean.

Ridiculing and chiding with silly sarcasm or ironic idiosyncrasies, and especially when the post only includes silly sarcasm or ironic idiosyncrasies, can (pretty much only) be interpreted as making fun.

I'm still waiting for you to quote the post of mine that you claim is entirely devoid of everything except silly sarcasm or ironic idiosyncrasies.

I'm also still waiting for some quotes of instances of me ridiculing or chiding you.

@skoal,

Silverwook has replied.  Instead of dragging this out maybe you should stop and thank him as well.  It is what you wanted, another person to help clear things up?

So... 2001.

What's the deal with that fan-edit that came out a while back, but got taken down?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Maybe I'm dragging things out, however if I am then Antcu is also. Please be fair.

Your reply, before you edited it, where you asked Antcu to stop, was better because it was fair. Sorry you changed it.

@skoal,

I asked him to consider cutting his losses, yes.  Ant can handle himself here so I adjusted my post.  I posted Silverwooks response twice for you and you didn't even bat a lash at it.

No-one here likes e-penis, except for maybe Mr. Frink's mom, but I digress.

We are all here for the same thing.  Did you ever stop and think that maybe no-one was responding to your requests because just maybe you were too insistent?  Patience is a valuable resource around here.  Use it.  It will serve you far better in your search than constantly questioning or tossing out the same requests over and over again in a short amount of time.

I think you should slow down a little.  Let things breath so that you'll be happier when you get good results instead of wanting to slap someone with it because it took too long for you to get, ya know.

Take care of yourself too .... we don't need members exploding like the bird does when Fiona sings in the woods(Shrek).

I am unsure.  Maybe fanedit.org would be the place to look for answers.

Touché, except, you are the one who, to use your words, exploded first. Please don't re-write history, the thread is all here to see.

I hope someone archived Steven Soderbergh's trimmed cut of 2001. At the very least, I hope there's a list of changes somewhere.

Okay...now that I got that off my chest...I found my WB disc. It's the remastered version seen here...

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare6/2001.htm (Note the vob dates listed)

The first WB disc is part of the wave of Kubrick films rushed out in 1999 after his death, and is probably identical to the MGM disc, except the fixed HAL line and possibly replaced the MGM home video logos. The specs on the back are the same as the MGM.

Still searching for my MGM copy.

According to the information we have there is no reason to believe that there were 2 different 1999 Warner DVDs. Instead, it seems that Warner rereleased the 1998 MGM disc in a different case (snap case, "Stanley Kubrick Collection"), as part of the 1999 Kubrick boxset, but also released a new disc (still in 1999, same snap case) which is derived from the same master this time including the line "I read you".

2001 MGM DVD

I got this picture from another seller on eBay.  It is IN the 1999 DVD release for the movie.

Sorry I missed your call for help, Silverwook. Because (as we all know):

.

I looked around eBay again (even completed auctions) for a seller with a complete set of pictures -- still nothing. And most of them just use eBay's stock photo!

So, I put my own disc [note WB logo] into the previous Warner 1999 picture set. This now is the proper Warner 1999 DVD package to look for ..

And I don't mind restating for a sum-up:

  • MGM      1998 DVD -- mono/panned dialog1; missing H.A.L.'s spoken "I read you."
  • Warner 1999 DVD -- mono/panned dialog1; includes H.A.L.'s spoken "I read you."
  • Warner 2001 DVD -- mono/centered dialog1,2; includes H.A.L.'s spoken "I read you."

1:  from listening to Floyd/receptionist chat at space station arrival
2:  only person-to-person is centered; person-to-monitor (for example - "Voice Print Identification") is still panned

And, for completeness, here's the Warner 2001 DVD release's H.A.L. audio screenshot ..

.. and the Warner 2001 DVD package on eBay [go to link for zoom-in views] ..

Thank you! But please note that there are other differences between the soundtrack remastered in 2001 and the previous ones. For example in the remastered version the surround is stereo, and sometimes it contains the low sound of the spaceship that wasn't there in the previous mix.

Thanks for those additional differences! At least we can take comfort in the fact that Kubrick wasn't responsible for them ... unLike some one else who jUst Can't let go And move on to newer thingS

BTW, my summation was only addressing those concerns voice by skoal. It was never meant to be considered exhaustive. So do continue to point out any new Discoverys [painfully obvious pun intended] among the various releases.

A local theater chain in my area is playing this in 70mm on June 20 and I'll be seeing it. Is there anything that anyone needs me to take note of?

Besides the fact we all envy you? ;)

My other DVD still eludes me. I'm pretty sure it's hiding behind my Laserdiscs, because it knows I would never look there first.

The audio, do the cast members all come out of separate speakers, but HAL come out of all the speakers at the same time?

I saw this in 70mm at the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring, MD last year. The print was in pristine condition and the house was packed. It was glorious.

I'm pretty sure timdiggerm saw it there too, but months and months earlier; maybe years.

 I'll be listening closely

Also, what kind of 70mm prints of this exist other than the Cinerama? Is there a normal 70mm? Any remasters? I am curious what kind of version of this I'll be seeing.

Maybe look for the color of the moon while the shuttle passes over. (Post 118). Curious to see if it is green or brown. Thanks

Envy is turning the moon from brown to green.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

I was lucky,  I saw it in Cinerama when I was 16 years old at the Palace Theater in Tampa Fl. I was on my 1st unchaperoned date.   I remember it like it was yesterday.  I would love to see it on a very big screen again.
