How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4 — Page 100

I'm not sure how busy my dad is (he's still in another province), but I can ask him.

I guess I'll have to make another Excel mock-up for that small variant. I'm not printing it off and cutting and folding everything. ;)

I love the way capturing is described in the PDF: "If your animal moves to a space occupied by an opponent, [you invite him to your] farm."

Yeah, I thought it was cute.  Unfortunately, it appears the rules are unavailable, and only the printable game/pieces and app are available.  My Kindle Fire won't download the app on its own (stupid thing!) but I might be able to get it to play and figure out the rules anyway.  I'll get back to you.

The PDF files in the link you sent me have the rules along with the game and pieces.

See, I thought we were missing the piece moves, but I was looking in a hurry as usual.  I'll try to create such a spreadsheet too if you don't beat me to it at some point tonight.

I doubt I will.

Also, my dad says he's willing to try another game. He can't guarantee that he won't be too busy, but we can always have another game going in the chess variants thread if there's a lull.

Which game will we play? If it is either of the two we did previously I might even recall the rules!

It would likely be one of the two.  I know of no other three-player shogis, though there is a four-player version, but then we'd have to hunt down another player.  I am interested in Kokusai Sannin, and I think I'd like to have a go at allies against one, with me being the loner, if you guys are okay with that.  Post, you gave up too early last game, and I think it is actually possible to force a win as the loner, but I want to test it out.

And Ric, yeah, we can pick up the other game if there's a lull, like you said.  I'll try to get a spreadsheet eventually.  Always busy.

Whatever makes you happy...well, no, strike that: as long as you are happy...please make the first move while I find my board...

Had some trouble getting the file back, but I'm good to go now, so my first move is:

N-9xy

I'm playing from the upper left corner, since that's where I was during our last game.  As we had it set up before, Ric is next, but we don't have to keep it that way.

Let's keep it as it is...but I was sure you were on the upper right before...?

I guess I'm directionally challenged because that is what I meant, and my move makes it requisite. What a dork I am 8P

OK, no problem... ;-)

Maybe my board is skewed, but which knight are you moving? Right now I see a Bishop at 9xy?

Is your board still saved in the middle of our last game? His bishop should be on 9ab/ac.

I wonder if it is also possible that your setup is a little funny, perhaps the alignment of the board and pieces is different on the grid than Ric's and mine.  I know sometimes when I booted up the spreadsheet I had to realign things in the past.  I agree with Ric's placement of my bishop.

One other thing occurs to me: we have played two 3-player hex shogis, each on separate boards.  Perhaps you are using the incorrect board.

Ric can you send me your board? Mine is off center for some reason. Thank you.

Inserting a row or column in Excel, then removing that same row or column has sometimes realigned my games if that helps.  I know it sounds weird, but it's worked.

Well there is progress...now it is simply the fault of a pawn that your knight cannot land there...

Have you tried inserting a cell and then not deleting it? :P

Haha!

Thank you for the board update, Ric. You would have both laughed if you had seen my setup. Somehow I had 3 ranks of troops and on off-center garden...?

Anyway, my move:

P jk9-kl10

I see you've tried to promote your king right off the bat, you cheater.

That, I believe, is the chief consequence of him being the one against whom we've aligned...
