Well, I guess I'm kicked out of MillenniumFalcon.com. I've been banned, though I've no idea why, and there's no way to contact anyone. Oh well....

MeBeJedi, did you get thrown in the briar patch? ;-)

I guess...I've yet to find out what happened. I can't even view the forums unlogged.

Oh well, at least now I'm spending more time on my transfer. I also got Combustion to save my changes! Yeah!

(Don't mind this - it is only a test. )

Two things to say. First of all, I'm dropping the other thread. It's just not working out well, and I'm not making enough progress to necesitate its use, so here's the last update.

Update: Okay, Just wanted to give some examples of what I am working on. Here's a 9 Mb segment comparing before and after. Te opening sequence has a slight glitch, see if you can find it. The remaining segments have the most speckles/glitches that I've come across so far, so I chose those to demonstrate what can be done with Combustion. (one of my corrected sequences has a missing frame which I wasn't aware of until now - guess I'll have to go back and fix it.) Be sure to watch it in fullscreen, as most of the speckles are actually kind of small. It may seem like overkill to fix them, but they would really show up in an anamorphic transfer. Plus, I want a pristine master for future projects (in case my LD player bites the dust.)

corrections.mpg

Secondly, I have some comparison screen caps of fixed frames. Keep in mind that these are all single-frame errors, either at the beginning or end of a sequence, and all but two would be very difficult to see during normal viewing. I just wanted to show some of the inherent glitches of the LD transfer, as well as how effective Combustion 3 can be at fixing them.

Oh, my card is a Bt878-chip based board. and I'm using a third-party Universal WDM Video Capture driver. The Hauppage drivers wouldn't allow for 720x480 capture on their own board - go figure.

As for capture, I'm using the capture software that comes with the stand-alone MainConcept encoder. I can consistently get captures with no dropped frames with this software better than any of the others I've used. The settings themselves are consistent across all the capture programs.

Okay, I "fixed" the missing frame in Corrections MPEG.

(I put fixed in quotes, because it actually fixed itself, apparently. Musta been a glitch during the compiling.)

I figured I'd go ahead and put this link in here as well, though it won't be here long. This is the same audio I intend to use for my final disc, but the video is an older transfer.

Here's a 40Mb zip with three scenes. It's saved as a DVD file, so you can load it in to your software DVD player and cycle between the 3 soundtracks (there's also some commentary). The AC3 is noticeably quieter than the PCM, but this is not unusual. If you don't have 5.1 playback, then there's no real point to downloading it.

They look and sound great. I've always wondered why AC3 tracks are so much quieter than normalized WAVs. Is that a drawback of the compression? Is that why DTS tracks are louder than AC3 ... less compression?

The compression, while it can affect the volume, isn't solely to blame. A lot of what is thrown away are sounds that are "masked" or covered up by louder sounds, as well as inaudible or unnecessary frequencies. Keep in mind, also, that I am splitting up what is essentially a 2-speaker soundtrack among 5 speakers. I could have cranked up the AC3 volume more, and dropped the PCM/commentary soundtracks to compensate, but I didn't do so at the time. Maybe next time.

DTS tracks aren't necessarily louder, but they often sound "fuller" because more audio information is kept.

The only SW LD's that had AC3 were the Special Editions and The Phantom Menace. The earlier SW LDs had only analog stereo, and later versions, including the Definitive Collection and Faces sets, have digital and analog stereo.

I used Graphedit to emulate a Pro-Logic II decoder and create a multi-channel WAV file, WinHex to edit the WAV, BeSweet to split the multi-channel WAV into 5 separate WAVs, and Vegas to align and create the master AC3 file.

It's possible. I made that file so long ago, I can't even remember. I will probably remaster it.

Sorry I haven't read your whole thread, Have you tried that spot remover filter for virtualdu?. I toyed with it and if you dial it way back it seems to only remove spots that shouldn't be there. I was thinking if there is a way to associate a hue (blue, white) and a frame length (1 or 2) it would only remove the rot spots from the video.

Maybe not, I'm going to email the programmer to find out.
Author
Time
Not really, and I probably won't, either. Filters tend to be dumb "catch-alls", and can introduce new problems as they fix old ones. I'm happier going frame-by-frame, and making things exactly the way I want them.
