I know what you mean. In the OT the lightsaber was always something spectacular since you saw it so rarely. And it was a rare sight in the actualy story/canon as well. The idea of the almost exterminated Jedi knights always felt so much more exiting to me then a galaxy full of what is basically just space cops with laser-batons. Which is basically how I always felt about the PT Jedi. Even as a kid, when I was a lot less skeptical about movies in general, I always felt that the big battle at the end of AOTC really sucked out the mystery and wonder of the lightsaber. It just became another weapon. For all it's flaws TPM did at least show them sparingly(-ish).

As for the TFA rumours; there will most likely not be any more than three lightsabers. There's obviously Kylo Ren's cross-saber, Luke's old lightsaber which probably will be used at some point, and if the rumours are true we will very likely see Luke's green saber in action again. So I guess we'll get something in between TPM and ROTJ.
