The green saber didn't belong to his father but another jedi which was his friend. Kyle's father had Force powers but never became a jedi. Also when Kyle picks up his old lightsaber from Luke on Yavin IV in JK II Jedi Outcast he picks up a blue lightsaber with a different looking hilt than the one he had in DF II. DF II also makes references to Kyle having fallen to the dark side, suggesting previous experience with the jedi. I think this past experience was used as an excuse for how he managed to develop his powers and skills so quickly. Or rather re-develop. It's not really important to enjoy the game, but it does fix some "plot holes" that were necessary to make the game more interesting.
