Probably the only reason they later decided to saddle him with a blue saber was to conform to the shitty RGB colour scheme from the prequels. They did that to virtually all the EU Jedi directly before and after AOTC came out, regardless of whether those characters appeared in the PT -- or the PT era -- at all.

"The RGB colour scheme of the prequels"? The OT only had RGB, the PT added colours like yellow and purple into the mix. Of course Dark Forces II predates the PT, so technically they borrowed it from the EU.

Kyle Did however have a blue lightsaber before he found the Green one. Dark Forces II never really explained how Kyle developed his force powers and lightsaber skills so quickly throughout the game because they released a tie-in novel(s) around the same time to explain that he was a jedi before the events of the DF II (and after DF I). So he technically had the blue lightsaber first.
