Maybe it could also be taken in consideration the option of using the laserdisc as reference to color correct the DCP...

I don't know what the laserdisc colours look like, can you post some screencaps Andrea?

Is there a comparison somewhere between the DCP and DVD version? I never really compared them myself, but looking at them independently they both looked fine to me.

You can find comparisons between the DCP and DVD releases on caps-a-holic.

...too tired to search between thousand discs to find it, and then capture it... (^^,) I spent the whole day with the hardware pro-logic test...

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Trust me, the colors of the LD are really close to the DVD/DCP that wouldn't be that useful to use it as a reference.

I'm the dude who did the second screenshot. I agree that it is a little bit too bright but you have to understand that it's based on an old TVrip made from an original 35mm print.

Now that could be interesting as reference for a color correction don't you think? ;-)

There are/have been 35mm film cells on eBay UK that could be helpful at determining color, even if it's not the same as projecting them. (Also, the auction pics are low res.)

If those are the real thing, then I stand by what I've assumed. The DVD is a bit warmer, hence a bit better, but the difference is so little when they're not side by side that it doesn't affect the viewing experience.

How would a picture of a picture be helpful for that?

Well, personally I can clearly see the difference on my TV so it does affect my viewing experience. The difference in colour is particularly noticable on my big monitor.

This is why I regrade primarily for myself because everybody has different colour sensitivities and overall colour/fleshtone preferences. In this case my colour preference for Back to the Future pretty much aligns with the DVD release colours so that's what i'll be regrading to.

Guys, have you noticed this issue before?

The problem is here since the 2002 transfer but was corrected for the BD release.

Strangely, there's a similar issue in The Shining as well.

it makes you wonder what are the correct colors of this movie? ghostbusters and ghostbusters 2 have these kinds of issues as well

I don't understand what causes this. A particular section of the color space is altered - look at the road lines in the left of the frame, they are pink too. It reminds me of the bizarre red-to-green changes in the 1993 Star Wars masters.

I found a film cell on eBay UK with this frame, but the picture is too dark and too low-res to see what color the wheels are.

Yeah its known, but the green in the "corrected" does not help

The skateboard wheels are yellow there is no doubt about this, they are turning pink on two shots in this scene that's all.

The "corrected" picture comes from my own color corrected version. It's not that green to be honest, it's just this incredible amount of pink that makes you think that.

I really like the corrected colours to be honest. What did you use to do this?

I've used a plug-in called "FilmConvert" with some manual settings.

By the way, I'm keeping you guys informed. I've just received an answer from Universal and they told me the 30th Anniversary edition will use the same masters as the previous release.

Someone please find a 35mm print somewhere.

Really? That's very nice of them to share infos like that with an individual.

How long is the color problem in the skateboard scene? A few frames in a shot, a whole shot, or several shots throughout the movie?

Author

I tried to correct the issue myself. Using Channel Mixer and Color Balance in Photoshop.

Now we have to figure out why this happens.
The film was fading? Is this a color space issue?

Here is a comparison video clip that can be downloaded here.

@zee944: As you can see on this clip the color issue lasts for two shots.

that just shows they don't care about one of the biggest trilogies of all time to even give them a 4k restoration on the 30th anniversary set.

@jedimasterobiwan: I'm not taking requests at this time but I'll keep ghostbusters and ghostbusters 2 in mind for the future when i've got less on my plate and consider taking them up as projects. I can promise no more than that.

the dcp version is what i'm talking about not the blu ray to make it look like the blu ray but without any of the dnr and have it color corrected.
