What's wrong with the current Blu Ray? My Fantasia knowledge isn't up to snuff.

Well, it's probably censored for one scene.

I'm not a Fantasia expert either, but if it's like all of the other Disney films from that era (and I'm sure it is), the Blu-ray does not have genuine color timing and the entire film is digitally rotoscoped so you're not actually looking at any of the film cells anymore.

Does the BD still have the redubbed narration by Corey Burton?

It's degrained to death (like all Disney animation Blurays), and has drastically altered colors.

Really curious to see how are the colors in this scene!

(some claim that the sky Blue is the original color, but I'm not convinced)

I tried to reply before, but couldn't due to the forum problems.

Bless you poita and everyone involved for this!

Fantasia is my 2nd favourite animation film (after Beauty and the Beast), and to think that I could see it as it was originally presented, I cannot find the words to describe what I'm feeling....

Looking forward also to news about Alice, the first Disney animation  film I ever saw (on TV on a day of the Easter holiday week), so it holds a very special place in my heart!

 Yes.

I'm going to take it the 3.0 track poita procured doesn't contain the full Deems Taylor narration, or does it?

An uncensored Pastoral sequence would be really great.

Wow, just wow. I was under the impression that all of the magnetic sound had degraded by now so I never thought that we'd ever see (hear?) a complete copy again. It sounds like this will truly be one to treasure.

Like DoomBot, I will gladly contribute something if it's any help.

PS. Yay, forum's working again :)

The sound mix is a major problem with the Blu-Ray. It's been processed to within an inch of its life; the tape hiss removal sounds to have taken a lot of the ambiance and echo with it. I've also read complaints that the directionality was messed up.

Hallelujah !!!! Welcome back Poita ! Keep us updated for this.

BTW, will you still accept donnations for contribution for this project ?

For the raw footage (and restored if done) what kind of harddrive(s) will you need for the transfer(s) ?

Keep up with the solid good work here. Everybody owes you their very soul now, Mr Scratch ;-)

One more thing, aside of Poita, who will work on the image & sound restoration (for the HD digital files) ?

Thanks to answer

Donations are always appreciated, paypal is xbox at mudgee dot net.

I posted the pastoral scene some time ago, if someone still has it, feel free to repost it here, I don't have space to render it again at the moment.

I'm pretty sure some clips to show short pieces of historical film come under the education fair use. I have set myself up as an accredited library now. Similar clips have been on youtube for years and have not had takedowns.

If the mods want to remove the clip, feel free, but I found some of the sunflower scene etc. in an old dropbox account if anyone is interested.

A warning to everyone (mostly Americans) that some may find the deleted Fantasia scenes offensive or uncomfortable, if so, please have that discussion in a separate thread, I'd like to keep this about the preservation, not the politics.

Wow Poita, I'm speechless. For years I've dreamt of a proper preservation of Fantasia... Today you present this, with full Fantasound no less!

I keep pinching myself but I'm still awake, how is this possible?

Fantasia is one of my all time favorite movies, and seeing it finally get the treatment it deserves is an immense pleasure.

Thank you. I just wish I could be able to donate to the cause but alas, I'm strapped for cash.

Even a fiver is appreciated :)

It will be a while before it can be fully restored, but at least it is scanned and the audio captured, so a full restoration is now possible.

Anyone have an example of what the lens switch in and out for a 'widescreen' effect looks like? Will it have differing aspect ratios and/or framing? Thanks.

The animation sequences are just standard full frame on the print, they were just squashed on screen to get the 'widescreen effect' by projecting them with an anamorphic lens, so they looked awful. The Mickey Mouse scene however was actually in anamorphic, as the studio rightly realised that people would notice Mickey suddenly looking fat and squashed.

So would the final restoration of this have differing aspect ratios to match the animation, or would it all be preserved in a widescreen format to keep it how audiences originally saw it?

It sounds like this is the 1956 SuperScope widescreen reissue, not the actual 1940 roadshow version. (Meaning the extra Deems Taylor stuff isn't in it.)

Doesn't this also mean the mag track is the phone line recording of the Fantasound track, and not the true original 1940 Fantasound? IMDB says the phone line transfer was done by RCA for that '56 re-release...

This is still an absolutely awesome find, make no mistake.

The dynamic panning was in the front for the DVD. It's now at the sides/back for the BD. If you do a custom downmix, it would sound about the same, surprisingly (minus the phantom/physical center issues).

EDIT: I'm almost sure, The 2000 DVD, in addition to the reverb that was already there, they added a bit more. The BD they didn't add reverb - the rears sound direct.

Sorry if I sound anxious (can't help it), but is there any update on this?

(and Alice in Wonderland that was mentioned)

If you really want it to feel like Christmas, stay tuned... Matrix, Star Trek III and Alice in Wonderland news soon.

I'm curious about Star Trek III, do you a version that's different from the theatrical release?
