Unused force ability?

Author
Time
In ESB, Yoda says to Obi Wan that he has been watching Luke for a long time, and notes that he's always been focused on the future, not the present. What force ability does this relate to? If Yoda is stuck on Dagobah, how does he know what's going on in Luke's life, and why hasn't this ability been used in other movies?

Well, Obi Wan felt the destruction of Alderaan, Yoda saw what was going on with Anakin and the sand people. Yoda never talks about the details of Luke's perspective or Anakin's rage, so I don't think he can actually see what is going on. He can just read emotions and state of mind. I think all of those instances are the same power.

When in ESB does Yoda say he's been watching Luke for a long time?

"This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away...to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was...what he was doing. Adventure. Excitement. A Jedi craves not these things." (from the DVD subtitles)

Yeah, maybe its time to whip out ESB again.

Meh. It doesn't stand out in my mind.

I knew it was Yoda long before that line was spoken. Besides, my dad has all three of my DVDs.

Thats one of the faults of our generation, the first time we saw this green little puppet we knew he was Yoda.

When others got their first glimpse of him back when it premiered, they had no idea what role this puppet would play.

I don't understand.

The little guy being the powerful one is such a cliche, how could people not see it?

Don't ask me, ask the movie-goers of 1980.

Hindsight is always 20-20. Picture this: you are 10 years old and ESB just came out. You knew nothing about it except what you saw in ANH. Would YOU think the little green muppet was a great jedi master?

I did. And I was only nine. The only ESB spoiler I had was "I am Your father."

He was the only on on Daghobah, so who else could Yoda be?

Come on! The comic book adaptations were out well before the movie. We all knew who Yoda was; GL was playing with dramatic irony i.e. we know well ahead of the characters in the film about a certain development, and our tension level increases because the characters haven't figured it out yet.

BTW, I WAS 9 when ESB came out.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I was a couple months old when ESB came out. And I don't remember anything from when I first saw it, or even when it was. The first two movies just sort of fade back into my consciousness as far as my memory goes back.

my memories are much like starboys, i cant remember not knowing what happened in SW. It has always just been there.

As for the force power in question, i have always just assumed that it was just Yoda being in touch with the force, aka having a concious mental awareness of it at all times. Once you are in touch like that i am sure you get many impressions/visions through the force.

Maybe one night the midichlorians were smoking out and gave Yoda some "visions."

ROTJ I CAN remember the first time. Or rather the second time, but at that point I didn't remember the first time, so it was all new to me. I was home sick from school and I watched. It was so gosh darn exciting. I think because i remember how it felt the first time I still like it a lot (see ROTJ sucks thread)

Some people didn't know who Yoda was (thinking that old green guy was Yoda's servant or something), and some did catch up quickly and figure it out it was him. While it was no longer a surprise when the movie was released, since there was a lot of publications and pictures of Yoda, some people didn't see it, and Yoda is not featured in the original trailers. But yes, some were fooled. ESB was the first one I've seen, and for some reason I knew who Yoda was, I just don't remember where I've seen it or who told me.

Btw, I didn't know Vader was Luke's father, and when he told him, it didn't struck me as a surprise, because somehow I felt that the audience already knew it, that everyone knew it but Luke, so I was like "oh ok". What really surprised me about ESB, and made me quite pissed back then, was that the movie had no real ending. I did feel disapointed, it was the first time I've seen a movie with a hook to a following movie (I belive I'd watch Back to the Future 2, the first movie I clearly and fully remember seeing at the theaters, a few months later - and even that one had some scenes from the next one).

I watched it on TV summer of 1989, and BTTF2 came out here at the end of 1989.

Oops and by summer I mean your summer, not ours. It was our winter. Anyway I remember it was near my birthday.

A little bit off topic for a while... Hey Darth Chaltab, add Half Life 2 to your list of good things for the month.
