What's wrong with Palpy being a Sith? Just curious, nothing against him not being a Sith.

I think Palpatine works better as a self-taught darksider, someone who attained all that power working alone, someone who has his own personal reasons and goals for following the dark side.

Making him a Sith Lord -- making him part of any greater Force religion -- having it so that he does what he does because its in line with some pre-existing dogma -- reduces the character in my eyes.

It was really dumb he had to be called Darth Sidious and have a red lightsaber, like Yoda having a lightsaber and being a great warrior.

I was always convinced the emperor  and yoda were above mere physical conflict.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

This, plus TFN's fanatical zeal for the word "Sith" has made me hate that word.

In 1977-1983, I thought that "the Sith" was Vader's Stormtrooper legion.

And this too.

As you can tell by my current avatar, I have a fondness for Baron Orman Tagge. Not only are his cyber vision goggles totally bitchin', but he wields an orange lightsaber, too.

I've always liked the pre-PT idea that the Mon Calamari and Quarren made first contact with the greater galactic community only after the Empire came into existence.

I like the small-scale serial feeling that Tales of the Jedi had before Kevin J. Anderson joined.

KOTOR the video game!!! Also characters such as Darth Bane are really awesome.

The final 4 episodes of TCW are interesting. It's suggested that midichlorians aren't what the prequel Jedi think they are and the final episode ("Sacrifice") brings Tales of the Jedi to mind with illusions, spirits, and spells.

In the Redemption portion of Tales of the Jedi, Ulic remembers Massassi shooting Republic soldiers from rooftops. It's an awesome image.

I like this line from the Return of the Jedi Novelization:

"Vader's pulse and breathing were machine-regulated, so they could not quicken; but
something in his chest became more electric around his meetings with the Emperor; he could not say how. A feeling of fullness, of power, of dark and demon mastery - of secret lusts, unrestrained passion, wild submission - all these things were in Vader's heart as he neared his Emperor. These things and more..."

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight was one of the first bits of EU I was exposed to and thus a huge influence on my ideas about Star Wars as a whole, especially given the fact that I played it within a year or two of seeing the movies for the first time. The atmosphere and tone in that game is still closer for me to what Star Wars is supposed to feel like than almost anything else that's come out since. The lack of characters and locations from the movies made the galaxy seem much more open, and I think the way that dark Force users were handled here is a big part of why I'm so inclined to groan when I see every single bad guy with a lightsaber referred to as a "Sith" these days. I also think Yun's yellow lightsaber is why non-movie colors don't really bother me (the Darksaber from TCW is still the dumbest thing I've ever seen, though).

EDIT: What an historically significant post number.

Any time you take a character, and say "WAIT! There's a whole class of characters just like them!" it lessens that character.

Greedo comes from a species of all bounty hunters.

Jabba comes from a species of all crime lords.

Palpy comes from a club of evil wizards.

Boba comes from a planet of bad ass whatever he is (retconned at some point).

It makes them boring.

This. This is what Duracell and I have been trying to say. It's much more awesome when you come up with your ideology and become a badass without anyone else's help. Furthermore, Palpatine doesn't seem like the type of person who would identify with anything that he didn't create.

A species that has sworn eternal hostility to every form of tyranny over the bodies of men... interesting.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

I've been using the new EU novels as a sort of palate-cleanse between more serious fare, and I've got to say that Lords of the Sith has much better pacing than any of the three books that preceded it. It certainly has its problems, but I'm not finding myself getting bored the way I did with everything else so far.

EDIT: Wait, do the new books really not belong here? I know we've rebooted or whatever, but I really can't see this stuff reaching a wider audience or being considered higher status than the old stuff was in practice. If we really are keeping discussion separate, though, apologies.

As far as I'm concerned, the new books, comics, etc. are still EU even if they're considered "canon", and I choose to regard them as such. I think it's perfectly fine to talk about them in this thread.

I like Asajj Ventress. Out of the plethora of darksiders the EU created after AOTC’s release, she’s virtually the only one who wasn’t a flat, two-dimensional, evil-for-the-sake-of-being-evil villain.
