Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 47

I certainly hope to, if I can get a 35mm source for that.

In the -1 thread the team mention that you would be receiving clips of the rancor. I was going to ask there but I figured it'd be more appropriate to ask in this thread, but will this footage be used to despecialize the rancor sequence for 2.0, or will that not be done until later versions?

By the way, I've fallen ill and am unable to do any work, so I'm planning on having a Despecialized Edition marathon while recovering :)

What video sources will be added to the list up front in 2.0? It's currently starved at just the 2004 HDTV transport, DJ's GOUT upscale, and the 1997 SE DTV capture. And also what audio sources?

Thanks for all you do, Harmy!

The new sources will be Team N1's 35mm scans and possibly Puggo's 16mm.

Audio will be the same as the other 2.x releases except I don't think there's a mono mix of Jedi.

Is there no reason to use the 2011 Blu-ray? I was under the impression that it was your base video for all three films.

Also are you going to add any commentary tracks? That's what I was hoping to hear really when I asked about audio.

That was before the team -1 got the 35m prints, if I'm not mistaken all projects from now on will be based on original 35mm negative scans that are OOT. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes I guess that's a good point. I just like consistency, even in a case like this one.

I think the Blu ray just goes without saying. His samples he has posted online so far have been based on the Blu ray and the 35mm scan.

And I think the commentary audio is also considered standard for his v2.x releases, right?

IIRC the commentary track for Jedi is Stinky-Dinkins talking about my balls for two hours.

Ah okay. I obviously haven't paid enough attention to his 2.x release patterns then. That makes oodles of sense now, thank you.

Oh, yeah, definitely the BD will be used. And commentaries will be included.

Will the GOUT still be a source? I seem to remember it being mentioned that V2 will be GOUT-free, but that may have been from one of the other two movies.

None of the releases so far has been completely GOUT-free and I'm afraid v2.0 of Jedi won't be either but the GOUT presence should be absolutely minimal.

Is not possible to use the 35 mm scans to replace the GOUT? I was under the impression that at this point the GOUT will be gone on future releases... also I'm wondering how much content will be from the 35 mm scans, how much is from the Blu-Ray and how much of the GOUT, is there a ratio/ percentage distribution?

That's still excellent. What are some of the shots that still have to be GOUT? Are they mostly just undoing the recomposited effects?

Anyway, as long as those Tie Fighters disappear at 37:15 in v2.0 I'll be happy :)

The Bluray is the main source for most of the video.  Shots that were altered for the SE are being replaced, either partially or completely, with material from other sources.  The aim is to use 35mm film scans whenever possible, since the increase in resolution over the GOUT is enormous; but not every shot is currently available in 35mm, so other sources have to be used instead in some cases.

Shots that were altered with CGI are the highest priority for despecialization, but restoring original composites and mattes is also an important goal, in order to get the movies looking as close to their original appearance as possible.

As more 35mm material becomes available, future releases will include more and more of it, assuming Harmy has time to make new versions.

I know it's just a pet peeve, but the way in which this scene shows on screen has always bothered me. I don't know that there is anything that can be done about it, but it just is so in your face bad it irks me every time.

Having finally seen TESB Despecialized 2.0, I must say I'm very much looking forward to ROTJ Desp. 2.0. You've done an amazing job on the latest iterations of SW and TESB. I personally feel there's still some life in the GOUT, being the last official release and all, but your restorations, and the 35 mm preservations are certainly high on my wish list.

There's plenty of life in the GOUT for ROTJ - it's by far the best looking film out of the three, with the least DVNR smearing.

This came up a while ago, and if I recall correctly that matte painting and others would have been pretty seamless in theatres. I imagine that when Team Negative One puts out their preservation of Jedi said paintings won't stick out like a sore thumb. Another one of those situations where we probably weren't intended to see those shots at negative quality, and the added Blu Ray definition makes them look fake as all hell.

This scene is distracting enough with Lando's strap switching from side-to-side now you've got me staring at the matte painting.

I remember this shot also looked pretty dodgy on VHS back in 1986, so I think it probably didn't look all that great in theatres back in 1983 either, kind of like the scene of Vader getting off the shuttle on Endor. It's sort of interesting that ROTJ contains some of the best effects work in the OT, but also some of the worst.

Looks gorgeous to me.

Better blended than most matte painting/live action shots.

I'm waiting impatiently (in a good way) for v2.0, after seeing the quality of Star Wars v2.5 and ESB v2.0. I just don't feel comfortable watching anything less.

So, I can't watch Jedi until this or something of comparable quality and accuracy is released. Given I also don't care for the prequels, do you know what it's like to have ONLY TWO STAR WARS MOVIEs?!

Well, anyone who was alive in 1980 knows. I was't around back then.

Best of luck. Good day, or afternoon, or morning, or whatever time it is.
