Okay i will try to do a digital transfer (throug a specialized company) if I succeed to get the 2 VHS.

I think it will cost me a bit of money. But if you can succeed to achieve your project, I will be happy about it :)

very pleased with your work. I heard that they did a 3d transfer, which fixed the 20min missing footage on the second part. (But cut down the first half instead.)

Yes, I've still been working on and off (more off unfortunately) on the v2 restoration. As of now only a dozen or so shots remain, but these are the most time consuming and require MAJOR work (mostly rotoscoping).

The v2 will be the final version, there really isn't much more that can be gained from these sources. For a better version a 16 or 35mm print would need to come along.

With a bit of luck the v2 could be ready for new years..

A fresh pair of eyes (English or Chinese) for the subtitles would still be appreciated.

Also still looking for a way to capture two French PAL SECAM VHS tapes (Note: without this the French dub CANNOT be included).

Surprise news!
If you know how to USE the NET, a special new version of this restoration can be found there. Look for e.g. uproar. I cannot distribute this in any other way, sorry. I don’t even know what people are using these days. You are of course welcome to share amongst yourselves.

This is a barebones release with only new video.

The video features many, many changes and improvements over the first release. It is not perfect though. A couple of handfuls of frames are still scheduled to be fixed, and one scene in particular remains in low/bad quality. This scene will be extremely time consuming to fix, so I thought I would release this now, as I don’t know when I could have everything done to my liking.

Are then are copies of Ren Shen Guo, or Jinhou jiang yao with English subs?

I know they’re not as good or as loved, but I would like to be able to watch them properly. It would make a nice companion to any Uproar restorations.

Are you by any chance aware that a newly fully digitally-restored version of Uproar In Heaven was exhibited in Shanghai Int’l Film Festival this year in June?
From what I read in News, the restoration was commissioned by SAFS to digital media tech. co. of Western Movie Group in Xi’an China in March 2013, which was completed in 5 months. I didn’t have the chance to witness it in person, but according to the report, the result is a faithful 114-min-long, hand-cleaned, colour-corrected, audio-adjusted version of the original. Obviously considered an worthy enticement, it is the major motif of the film festival’s official poster, as you can see from the link below.

No news on when or if this will be in wider release though…
I registered just to post this to you 😃 For the last ten years, your restoration has been the only decent version I, and I am sure many others as well, could enjoy here in China, where everyone loves monkey King. A big THANK YOU for that!

I’d really love to have a copy of this. Haven’t heard of the movie ever before, but this work of passion sounds so amazing and beautiful I just want to check it out.
I haven’t been able to found your mkv file, tho.

Thank you! I got v2 thanks to ElectricTriangle and watched a bit just now. It looks great, much better than I was expecting given the other versions I’ve seen floating around. And the original film, IMO, is definitely nicer than the 2012 re-release. I’m looking forward to watching the whole thing.

There are still a few little grammatical things in the English subtitles, so far, but they’re not a big deal (things like “500 hundred”, which one would read as “five hundred hundred”). The first English subtitles seem to be closer to the original Chinese, so I prefer watching with those, whereas the second ones seem more of a “free” translation (or at least that was my impression, though I don’t know Chinese).

By the way, does anybody know where to get the other subtitles that were apparently included in v1 but not in v2, such as the Chinese subtitles? I’d just like them for completion…
