Here in Austria, downloading is legal but uploading/sharing is illegal ... if it is illegal capturing TV Shows & Movies, then i will not do it anymore, simple as that. (then i am hoping for a Blu-Ray Release soon :-) )

Well, for that 2nd part, today's Blu-ray releases get low opinions on this forum. So don't hope for that!  :D
That's why we have all these projects to produce "new" versions to fix everything from neon re-coloring to confused re-editing to artificial re-sounding ... or create new "fan versions" for just having fun with the movies we love.

For that 1st part, with downloading legal, it's sounds like you're on solid ground for capturing anything you like by law. (That's what I was getting at with my "countries" comment earlier.) And as business must abide with the laws wherein they operate, some agreement provisions may be null & void. (Same, too, from my "businesses" comment earlier.)

No one here is a lawyer ... at least, he hasn't put up his shingle. So, if you must be absolutely certain, you should consult with one who works with such law. And then you won't have to guess what is actually legal and what isn't.

A simple question ......

What is the recommendation for Screen Capture freeware with the widest capabilities?

I would like to capture a few things from Netflix and am not yet in the market for a hardware solution.  I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 with a quad core AMD processor and onboard graphics.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Videolan Player maybe?

Haven't tried it but I may.  I can screen capture with Vdub but obviously the quality is limited.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Depending on how fast VideoLAN (VLC media player) can capture ..

How to capture/record desktop video using VLC media player
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-capturerecord-desktop-video-using-VLC-medi/

.. (that demonstration is at a "blazing" 10fps), you may require more dedicated software.

Videogame players tend to use the known and staunch FRAPS http://www.fraps.com/ to grab fast action gaming at high resolution/frame-rates, for game without built-in recording. However, there are similar programs jockeying for that dominant position. Like any software solution, how well it works will depend on the power of your system to keep up.

Always download from the original site for "clean" copies, and otherwise check user reviews to confirm their authors are not including unwanted ad-ware / spy-ware.

Good advice Spaced.  I tried VLC and it wasn't great for quality but maybe after reading the tut you provided the link for I can get a better idea on how to work it.

A comment on that tutorial referenced another webpage ..

Techsive - How to Record your PC Screen using VLC media player
http://www.techsive.com/2014/08/how-to-record-your-pc-screen-using-vlc.html

"The quality of screen capture is especially great with the VLC media player’s screen recorder, but it is only recommended if your screen capturing needs are basic. For serious projects, it is better to use some dedicated screen recording software like camtasia. VLC cannot record your microphone along with the screen capture and you will have to record and add an audio file separately if you want it."

It looks like VLC is the wrong software of video/audio recording. Camtasia once was one of those videogame recorders, but their website makes no mention of videogame capturing now.

Definitely give FRAPS a look.

The full-function software is $37, but there's a free, limited-feature version you can try. Depending on your machine speed & storage (files are big & mostly uncompressed during capture), you can do this:

Fraps can capture audio and video up to 7680x4800 with custom frame rates from 1 to 120 frames per second!

     World Of Warcraft - 1600x900 @ 30fps
     Trackmania Sunrise - 1280x720 @ 60fps
     Far Cry - 512x384 @ 25fps

I don't see full hi-def video examples. Maybe 1920x1080 @ 30fps is just beyond present software capabilities (but that's why there are hardware solutions).

over the months, i captured lotta stuff from Netflix, Hulu & even TIDAL, but somehow, every time i cannot capture “lossless” , for example, i captured a Beyonce Concert from Tidal, which lasted almost 2 hours, but after capturing for 40 minutes, suddenly it stops capturing & freezes & when i continue, every 3-5 Minutes, there are a lot of frame drops!!

Somehow, i cannot choose 1080i60, if i choose in the nVidia Control Panel i am getting a Black Screen, but if i choose 1080p 30Hz (natively), i am getting successfully a screen. I thought this card can capture 1080i60Hz?! If the card is not capable of capturing in 60Hz, then i am really thinking about selling the card again…

Hi!
I’ve been trying to record a Chromecast stream for a while now without any luck.
May sound strange but my streaming service only allow a 4 h lag behind on live sports, which is way too short when you have kids.
I have tried with a HD pvr, a hdmi to component converter and HDCP stripper in different combination.

Anyway, is there a device capable of recording Chromecast? If it linux compatible it would be even better.

Thanks!

Hi, I have just found your Website in my search to find an answer to overcoming HDCP encryption. I use the Black Magic Intensity Pro capture card through the View HD splitter to record from the Virgin cable box, all cables are HDMI and I use Windows 10… This set-up has worked perfectly until fairly recently, but now, using Black Magic Media Express, I have the picture, the audio level meters are active, yet I get no sound. I have exactly the same result when looking at Black Magic on the Control Panel/Sound page, audio levels active but no sound. I am now tempted to try either the Chinese sound card option or the Hauppage Collossus mentioned on your post, having tried other possibilities (without success) I am now a little wary of spending yet more time and money, but will happily do so if I can get a positive result.

Hi, I totally agree with digitalfreaknyc, Hauppauge is the only place to go. I have been trying for several years now to do what Colossus and the HDMI splitter have achieved within a quarter of an hour of installation.
The Asian capture card was no good at all and with rubbish graphics, neither was Fury HD any good. So, very many thanks for the info on this website it has, in the end, been very helpful. Mike T.

Can you give any specifics – on which Colossus card (apparently, there is the first card and now a 2nd), what version software/driver it works with, and your splitter (there seems to be inconsistant results with those boxes)? Thanks!

All of Blackmagic’s products are designed to be used in production, so they have no need for supporting compressed audio capture. Unless your STB can decompress the audio to 5.1 PCM over HDMI, their products won’t help you.

Hi, I found a hdmi ac3 to hdmi+LPCM 7.1 Audio converter:
Gefen, LLC - HDMI to HDMI Plus Audio Converter

How can I attach this device to a Blackmagic Video Capture Card to record multichannel?
Is there anyone out there which has this equipment?
I think this should work?!

For an academic project, I’m bulk recording TV news broadcasts from a channel that transmits in 1080i and every so often I need to edit down the recordings to particular segments of relevance but there’s a frequent problem where in every video editor that I’ve tried, (Avidemux, MPEG Streamclip and F.C.P.) the recordings either don’t play properly (often because of video corruption) or simply crash the software. I’ve tried VideoRedo and other programs but with mixed results. Some files I can fix but not all.

However I’m always able to review the recordings on my PVR and watch them on my TV without any problems, so that’s got me thinking that surely I could just connect my PVR’s HDMI out to an HD capture box and let it capture the content in a lossless format that would be free of the problems and also easier to edit than AVCHD.

How viable is this idea and if so, what you would recommend as an external capture box for this purpose?

Thanks! Just had a look on eBay UK and they can be picked up quite cheap. It’s Mac compatible too, which is a must for me. 😃

This would capture in a lossless format?

The external device is probably the best choice as none of my boxes have any free PCIe slots and plus, I can use it with my MacBook Pro during situations where I want to capture stuff when I’m away from home. 😃

Cheers.

I went with the UltraStudio Mini Recorder and so far, so good. Now, I need a HDCP stripper that works with 1.4a. Can anyone recommend one? The ViewHD is 1.3 and my PVR is 1.4a, so I need something more recent and I’m wary after looking through countless reviews for these devices and seeing warnings by people who had their HDMI ports blown by these removers.

Forgive me if this has been pointed out before, but are there any devices currently on the market that can record in at least 1080p video and 5.1 LPCM audio in tandem?

I’m really eyeing the Inogeni 4K HDMI to USB 3.0 Converter (really dull name) except for one thing. While the audio is recorded losslessly, it’s maxed out at 2.0.

If there are none with all 3 requirements, I guess I’ll get that one and be done with it.

I have the ViewHD and it’s been working just fine. Not to mention I have friends who use it too.

Ok but are you capturing from devices with HDMI 1.4 and above? Does it remove the HDCP on those?

Unfortunately, I have not tried to capture anything 3D or 4K so the answer would be no.

However, I did stumble upon the Goronya splitter which is totally equipped with HDMI 2.0 capability and though it says it has HDCP 2.2, they all say they have that and it also says it’s compatible with Blu-ray players among other HDCP-laden things, so I say it’s worth a trial run. And if it doesn’t work, Amazon will take it back; No questions asked.

I may have to switch to Dish Network in the next few months. I’ve always been able to either record programming directly from the wall using a PCTV stick or using a firewire cable out the back of a Motorola box.

I’d like to get as lossless as possible captures from a Dish receiver. What is my best bet on a capture card and/or device. Internal is probably best so I don’t have to power multiple devices.

Easy. Get the Inogeni 4K2USB3 capture device or the Epiphan AV.io 4K capture device (they both capture audio losslessly too) and use Amarec with the LAGS codec to capture. Of course, you’ll need the ViewHD 4K HDMI Splitter to do any real capturing. XD

If you have any further questions, let me know.
