As for the "definitive" nomenclature, I believe to most ordinary folks it means "my go-to version".  That is how they probably should describe it because we have seen definitive versions surpassed by more definitive versions .... the name sake of this forum is certainly a predominant offender.

It is a personal opinion and in no way a permanent or thorough all-in-one description.  We all have personal tastes and each should be taken as-is and not forced on anyone either.

That's all I got right now, really.

It is a shame Alien Resurrection cannot be corrected

+1

Like, color corrected, or actually corrected?  Because that movie needs all kinds of correction.

+1 in favor of all the corrections needed.

:)

Color correcting Alien Resurrection without doing anything else to it is like putting lipstick on a pig, and then [REDACTED] the pig until your [REDACTED] falls off.

I quite like the colour in Alien Resurrection - could someone please do an edit which removes the rest of the film?

Author

The colour is 100% off. It looks nothing like an ENR print.

Author

Wasn't the U.S. laserdisc mastered from the ENR print? It was mentioned on the sleeve notes on the back how it was filmed

Now for the real challenge. Can you regrade the 3D version? :)

hah, regrading the 2D version of Man of Steel was challenging enough for me. You offering? :)

The 3D blu-ray.com review does say though that the 3D release of Man of Steel is pretty flat and that the 2D release is the one to go for.

Author

yeah, don't even bother with the 3d version. The conversion stunk.

Author

I have to admit, a good majority of the 3D conversions I've seen after a while I barely notice anything's even in 3D.

So far, the titles to beat in 3D have been Avatar, Prometheus, Guardians of the Galaxy and Mad Max: Fury Road. Everything else I've seen hasn't quite blown me away.

I gotta ask... why take the time to fix a film's color timing only to create a encode less than full 1080p HD??? Or are the files correctly color timed in full HD and then down converted for easy download?

Jurassic Park had good 3D for a conversion. Surprised me.

Just finished watching the regraded MoS and for the most part I loved it. My only "huh?" moments were some of the scenes that still had a very teal color to them. I didn't mind so much the underwater moments as I figure that makes sense there, but any scenes with the Army in their underground bunker (Superman in handcuffs for example), the teal was still there. Way too much to be a hiccup that got missed, so I'm assuming it was the editor's choice. My question is, why? TBH, those scenes were so teal that I'm guessing it was too much to try and change the color to anything else, be it blue, gray, or whatever. The only other nitpick I have is that some of the more darker scenes were still just as dark and I was hoping the brightness would've been upped just a tad.

But again, it was still a blast to watch this after having not seen it for about a year I think. It's made me curious to check out some other fan edits that have been done for MoS that change to plot/structure/sequences of scenes as well.

Glad you enjoyed it. What I did with the Man of Steel regrade was remove the blanket tint across the whole film and increase the saturation using a single setting, not selectively regrade certain scenes to my preference.

I agree that the scene that you mention in the army bunker is quite extreme in terms of colour grading but it seems perfectly consistant within the colour scheme that has been created for the film by Zack Snyder, it is a creative decision by him and his DOP so I want to preserve it exactly as it is, whether I agree or disagree with his choice doesn't really matter. I maintained the same brightness and contrast for exactly the same reason, I only change those when something has clearly gone seriously wrong, like with the Star Wars Original Trilogy blu-rays.

I see the purpose of this regrade of Man of Steel as enhancing Zack Snyder's vision of the film rather than enforcing my own.

By full 1080p HD I assume you mean 1920x1080 blu-ray compatible resolution? My regrades have exactly the same resolution except with the top and bottom black bar cropped, as is standard with 1080p mkv releases. They are cropped at the same time as they are regraded so there is no down conversion, no loss of image quailty.

From my experience a cropped mkv encode always has noticably better image quality than a 1920x1080 encode of the same size. There is also the matter that an mkv file has better compression than a m2ts file, a 20gb mkv file converts without image quality loss into a 22gb m2ts blu-ray file to fit on a bd-25. If you write the cropped mkv release to a bd-25, that 2gb lost can instead go towards the bitrate of the mkv release, making it a 22gb mkv encode that you can write onto a bd-25, with once again noticably better image quality.

So the difference in image quality between a cropped mkv regraded encode that fits on a bd-25 and a 1920x1080 regraded encode that fits on a bd-25 is pretty big for those two reasons, at least from my experience. For a guy like me that streams films from his laptop onto his TV, its a nobrainer to create cropped mkv regraded releases where the image quality is much better.

Thanks for the explanation, I understand now. I don't know why I didn't get it at first. haha

I thought since it was no longer 1920 X 1080 that you down converted the films and now I see that you simply removed the black bars. By the way the Alien film's screenshots look awesome! I am snatching them as I write this.

This is just wow! This is how a Superman movie colour grading should be. However, the movie is so serious in tone that I feel no colour grading will be able to lift the movie's spirits. Besides, the regrade kinda fits a Donner Superman, not Snyder's. Still a very good effort! Now if someone were to regrade Superman Returns, that'd be something!

What with tehparadox down for good it seems like a good time to resurrect this thread. I haven’t been idle these last fews days since coming back from my holidays (mostly to get my mind off tehparadox having gone down) and I’m happy to share the fruits of my labour with you guys.

My latest release is a regraded IMAX version of Titanic to mark the 20th Anniversary of this great film. I removed a strong blanket yellow tint that has been added to the whole film on the Titanic 3D blu-ray. The release is 22.8 GB and includes the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track from the blu-ray. I’ve put it up of Myspleen for those that are interested in checking it out. If there is interest, I can also put up the 46GB version of this release that I created to have as good image quality as possible.

In my honest opinion, the blue tint looks unnatural. Something in-between the Blu-ray grading and your version might look better.

All i’ve done is remove the blanket yellow tint that was there on the Titanic 3D blu-ray and boost exposure slightly.

I don’t think its my place to subjectively decide that I would prefer the film to look warmer and reintroduce some of the blanket yellow tint.

I personally think it looks great and is a big improvement over the blu-ray, whether people like the colours found underneath the blanket yellow tint though is entirely subjective of course, my releases just offer the option to watch these classic films without feeling like you’re wearing yellow sunglasses.
