Yep, 97 Jabba is awful - not that 04 is so much better...

Hence, why I described it as "10% less ugly" ;) Still ugly.

I've been trying to get on fanres, but the website seems to be offline.

DrDre, fanres is up and running, waiting for your SuperResolution article! (^^,)

OK, finally I got the Flunk - no, that's not a fancy named exotic flu...

What's is very good is the fact it has more details at the side - maybe just 1% more, but it's enough to me... I tried to integrate the Flunk with the Gkar+TB combined, and here you are the result:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/126355

it seems very well integrated, don't you think? The fact is, in many, too many shots, the two don't blend so well, and I'm too lazy to align them shot by shot; so, I think to focus on restoring the Flunk alone - that, by the way, *should* be better than the other two, at least according to the file sizes... and yes, Flunk has some garbage frames, that will be replaced with one, or both, the other sources; until now, I found only the shot when Leia gives the plans to R2D2; maybe there are other shots around, I still have to check the whole film - if someone is aware of other messed shots, please post here!

More natural colours, are you serious? These definitely got too much blue.

I've noticed on the Super 8 topic and on your last corrected 35mm scans that you also have some bluish clips. Is it a strange coincidence or do you maybe have a badly calibrated monitor?

I don't want to sound pretentious, I just wanted to clear the things up because I thought the colours didn't look "like they should".

@ilovewaterslides: even if I agree they are too blue for my tastes, the phrase "With more natural colors" may refer in comparison with an even more blueish, untouched version...

Judging by the previous raw screenshots that they posted, I'm pretty sure the print itself is not that blue at all. It has a pretty obvious golden tint to my eyes.

I don't think you sound pretentious. I am also puzzled by -1's extremely blue samples being posted from multiple projects in the last day or so. Surely the whole team doesn't have miscalibrated monitors. Perhaps the individual doing the uploading is doing these color adjustments on a bad monitor and not running them by the team before posting?

Actually, the print is not like either of those samples. Those are merely different settings used on the scans. They will be corrected later on. These are merely for resolution and detail purposes as you can imagine.

We've never claimed these are final, as people are assuming.

I don't think they're finished color correcting yet. The original raw stills they released were very blue, shots since then have varied.

Hmm, looking at the Super 8 thread, though, I do see what you mean. Strange.

Nice, finally better colors. But I think -1 will also do color correction when the time for it has come.

Darth Id on ‘Why “Ben”?’:

And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle.  It just doesn’t make sense!

Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!

Damn You!!!

Oh they've made it clear they will, I just thought I'd take a crack at it.

Any developments with respect to the 97 SE? The previous screenshots looked really impressive. Got anymore? :-)

Nope... I'm working to something else now, but, as you started your project before mine, now I'm waiting to see your GOUT SR version of all the three films! (-^,)

I know miracles don’t come often, but I would love to see some more of these '97 SE screenshots. The prospect of having what looks like scanned 35mm reels of the '97 SE makes me all giddy. I like the aesthetic of the colors even without correction; It’s a bit more surreal and vibrant in a good way!

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

Wanted another screenshot? Here you are!
GKar bicubic Vs GKar + TB merge, denoise, grainplate
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189560

Just relived my old PC, and played a bit with the latest avisynth script… what it does?

  • merge GKar and TB
  • deblock
  • slight color and contrast correction
  • denoise
  • upscale
  • grain plate

I like the overall result, but still a bit undecided about contrast… it boost some small details, but lose others; going to release a small clip to watch it in action.

Someone still interested in this project, anyway?

Thanks guys! I retrieved the color correction I developed years ago for my 1997 laserdisc project, and it fit quite well; I remember I worked a lot on it at the time… going to give it a try, who knows?

Here you are new screenshot comparisons:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189694
(this used just TB as source)

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189695
(note how macroblocks are removed, like on C-3PO’s head)

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189696
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189697
(the famous Mos Eisley shot seems spot on, colorwise)

The previous shots have all important color correction - the first was really pink on GKar, while a lot better on TB; the others are similar in both GKar and TB, and I used the same settings for all of them.
For the rest of the movie, I just diminished the pink tint a bit, indeed difference is more subtle, but still noticeable in a direct comparison:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189699
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189700
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189701
(look at the sky, macroblocks are greatly reduced, and a lot less visible in motion now)
