What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like? — Page 9

But it is pretty much clear as day a fact at least to me, as long as the original movies no longer exists.  I would not have a problem with the special edition if it did not replace the real films i grew up with.

Lucas is of the opinion that allowing choice is bad and that multiple versions should not compete with each other, not based on his words but based on his actions.

Ridley Scott had a final definitive vision of blade runner but it did not stop him and the studio from releasing the other versions of that film.

True. Lucas even tries contradicting his quote from the '80's of how films should be preserved. He now words it that its wrong for people who were not involved with the making of the film to get to get their hands on classic films and make changes. Lucas feels that should be the directors choice which is why he's moved forward on continually changing his films. Do I agree with it personally? Yes and no. Directors I agree should have a say in how films are going to be presented on future releases. Spielberg said a few years ago he is not making any further changes to his films. It'd be a shame that after he's gone and cant control what happens to his films that studios are now getting their hands on it, adding CGI in Jaws, removing the guns again in ET, ect. Regardless of if it enhances the films for better or worse, my vote would be worse, its an insult to Spielberg's choice to leave his films untouched. Now do I think George has no right to do what he does? No. Its his films so he can do what he wants. But rewriting history and pretending that there's only one definitive version when he keeps making changes anyway I disagree with. And as far as him updating to match his 'vision', that claim is getting old. The fact he wants to make changes to connect with the prequels shows he's going against his original vision. And frankly some of the recent changes are ridiculous. Vader saying 'noooo', Obi-Wan's 'call', the dug in Jabba's palace, Jabba's new palace door.

Lightsaber colors are still wrong in some frames, but more clear in many other ones.

As for Christensen, why should they change it back? Actually they should just improve it, but I doubt Christensen would be called just for some reshoots.

Every version of the movies should be released, that's for sure.

Also it makes no sense. Lucas claims he did it because thats the way Anakin appeared when he 'died' as in assumed the identity of Darth Vader and Anakin was no more. But Anakin had redeemed himself when he died and was once again a good man. If Jedi's are suppose to take on the form they were in when they 'died' it would make sense for Anakin to appear old. The old Anakin represents the redeemed Anakin Skywalker, the Anakin who did indeed bring balance to the force by destroying Palpatine.

slask, if you find most of us agreeing with impscum over you, you've really gone off the deep end here.

As I said, I won't waste time anymore, that reply itself proved exactly what I was saying in the other topic...

Mythic was established in 1995 and developed a name for itself with MMORPG Black Age of Cheap Maplestory Mesos Camelot, which was published in 2001 and has stayed reinforced ever since. In 2006, Electronic Artistry obtained the studio and relabeled it EA Mythological.

I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone here on the most intrusive changes (Greedo shooting first, Hayden's ghost, Vader's "NOOOO" in ROTJ, Boba Fett's voice change, Jawas on Rondos)

What I liked/didn't mind:

 Star Wars

-improved matte lines
-new Sandcrawler shots
-Landspeeder underside
-extended Sandtroopers on Dewbacks scene
-improved cell block perspective
-tractor beams
-Ben's hut
-"Open the blast doors!" being reinstated
-Biggs scene on Yavin IV
-air traffic of Mos Eisley, Falcon take off
-improved Vader lightsaber color when hanger doors are closing
-approach to the Death Star
-Death Star explosion (pretty unnecessary though)
-ugly stand-ins at the ending celebration replaced

Didn't like: (other than the obvious)

-I use to not mind the Jabba scene when I first saw it in '97, but in retrospect, it's pointless, and the CGI Jabba looks awful in all three iterations of the SE.. Would be great as an unaltered deleted scenes via extras, but having it in the film serves no purpose.
-Replacing the wolf aliens in the Cantina.
-The CGI robots, Rontos, and other CG creatures added into Mos Eisley. The Ronto walking directly past the screen when Ben and Luke arrive, as well as the Jawa falling off of one, are grossly out of place, and all around terrible.

The Empire Strikes Back

Liked:

-suitmation Wampa (Not needed, but not completely out of place)
-improved mattes in Snowspeeder cockpits
-Falcon's approach to Cloud City
-Cloud City windows (though I can't recall if I prefer the '97 or '04 versions)

There were other small changes done in '97 that I didn't mind, but I wouldn't say I "liked" them. (Vader's extended landing, and the people of Bespin reacting to Lando's announcement, for example). I still much prefer the straight and to the point "bring my shuttle".

Disliked:

-Boba Fett's voice change. I hate this with every fabric of my being. I understand why it was done, but it takes me out of the movie every time.
-Ian McDiarmid's hologram. Sounds like a good idea on paper, but the execution left a lot to be desired, and the change in dialogue was beyond unnecessary.
-Luke's scream. Like somebody else said, why would he scream if he jumped voluntarily? It's so dumb, and really quite distracting.

Return of the Jedi

Liked:

Actually nothing, really. I didn't mind Oola's extended scene, or the herd of Banthas, though

Disliked:

-New song at Jabba's palace. Not only does it remove most of the practical effect shots that were originally there, it's garish, and completely alters the mood of the scene. The extra shots of Boba Fett were pointless, and the CG Sy looks horrendous. It's a mess.
-CG Sarlacc. Completely unnecessary.
-Darth Vader's "NOOO" inserted into the 2011 version. Absolutely horrendous change, and IMO, one of the worst changes in any version of the SE's.
-Ghost Hayden. Arguably, one of the worst changes made to any of the movies, and on par with being as bad as Greedo shooting first (if not just as bad).
-Replacement of Yub Nub. Yeah, I know it wasn't great to begin with, and I don't mind the new song that much, but it just wasn't necessary.
-Removing Anakin's eyebrows.

I'm lukewarm on the expanded ending celebration. It's just kind of there.

Here's a change I don't see anyone take note of. Anyone notice in the SE for ESB the breathing of 'Vader' is changed in the cave? I assume it was done to hint that it's not the actual Vader but I think that sorta ruins it in a way. It loses that whole 'How did Vader get to Dagobah?' vibe before the scenes twist ending is revealed. I don't know. Just my thought.

I've noticed that one.  It bugs me too, for the same reason.

Yet another case of the SE over-thinking it and changing things that were perfectly fine and didn't need changing, just because they could do it.

I didn't realize before now that Vader's breathing in the cave scene was a later change. It's always bugged me, though.

Would that change be from the '04 version?

It's in the '97 and '04 versions. I'd assume its in the 2011 versions as well.

Yup, it's a '97 change.  In the original version cave-Vader has the same breathing sound as in every other scene, but in the SE it is changed to a more generic, lower-pitched, and more raspy sound.  The difference isn't hugely obvious, but it is there, and it is certainly a pointless thing to have done.

No, was making a lame joke about you for using "every fabric of my being" rather than "every fibre...."

For all I know, the former is an actual thing, but I've never encountered anyone even partially made out of fabric before.

The Vader 'NOOOOOO' is pretty much the best thing that could have happened for our cause. It turns people against the special editions better than Han shooting second ever could.

Nothing beats Hayden at that though.

I really liked the extended scene with the dance lady falling into the Rancor Pit. The song is trash, but unlike the Wampa scene, the excitement of what kind of monster was in the pit wasn't ruined by showing it. If anything, the addition actually builds more excitement since it doesn't show the rancor at all.

OH, so we're just nitpicking about obvious typos. Got it.

Jesus, is it really that dead around here?
