Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 46

I just found this board and downloaded the despecialized versions of all three films and they are fantastic.  I'd choose these copies over any of the special edition versions Lucas has ever created.  So I wanted to say a big thank you to anyone and everyone involved in this massive project to restore the original glory to the Star Wars Trilogy once and for all.

I wanted to ask about one thing though, I don't know if this was brought up before or not, but I've noticed something in Return of the Jedi.  The scene at the end where the Emperor is killing Luke with the lightning bolts, in the special editions the color of the lightning was changed to purple, but I remember clearly the original color of the lightning was blue from my pre 1997 VHS tape of the film.  It seems the despecialized version still contains purple looking lightning.  Is this going to be changed to the correct blue color in version 2.0?

Also I noticed when Darth Vadar has his helmet removed an attempt was made to replace his eyebrows that Lucas decided to wax off for the special editions for some unknown reason.  The restoration needs a bit of tweaking to get those brows right, but apart from that the movie is absolutely flawless, and I can't wait for version 2.0.  Thanks so much!

This will be fixed indeed, according to Harmy.

Also, the 2.x series has gotten serious color attention for the other films, so I expect it will be the same when Jedi is given that treatment.  Jedi didn't fade as much as the other films, so reasonably accurate references should be pretty easy to come by, and I expect the color grading in the 2.x series should be fairly uncontroversial (famous last words).

Yeah the eyebrows are a much discussed change when it comes to this project.

If I remember correctly, Harmy said he will be replacing all of the eyebrow shots with cleaned up TeamNegative1 film scans.

Yeah, the eyebrows are top priority. Once the eyebrows, Lapti Nek, and Yub Nub are properly despecialized GOUT-free, Jedi should be in good shape. Also that weird shot of Jabba that was cut in order to include a shot of Boba talking to the 80s back-up dancer. I think Harmy needed to add a bit of smoke to cover up the low quality GOUT footage, which from my understanding that particular GOUT shot was pretty fuzzy even for the GOUT.

I just want to give a despecial thank you to Harmy and all of the talented people working to give the fans around the world the truest version of the Star Wars trilogy possible. Your amazing work has blown me away. I recently sat down to watch Star Wars: Despecialized 2.5 for the first time with my wife a few nights ago not knowing what to expect and I was floored. I was grinning the with excitement the whole time!

To all of you incredible hard working people, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I never thought I would see Star Wars like this again. Please know that your efforts are being appreciated by so many.  I cannot wait to see how Return of the Jedi 2.0 turns out!

Harmy if your out there...

I believe the DeSpecialized Editions could ultimately be superior to any re-release just based on the sources your using.

Please tell me your not gonna put back in the matte lines around the Rancor or that kind of stuff.

Well, these are unbelievable. I'm watching SW 2.5 for the fifth time now. I'm sure Jedi 2.0 will be mindblowing. Thanks for everything. I enjoy these all to often.

I look forward to seeing the rancor matte lines back where they belong. :)

 I think you've misread who you're talking to! /luckyday

The matte lines were a result of the methods used to make the film. It's a product of its time. Embrace the matte lines!

I kinda spoke before I thought. I understand the project to restore the film to therr original state (the ones I grew up with also). I will embrace the matte lines lol. I will always watch this version over any SE if I have a choice.  ...move along.

I would be totally OK with that, as a purist and fan of the original cuts.

Curious on the progress of ROTJ 2.0

Do you think it will be released this year?

No rush, I think 1.0 looks great! The only thing that I think even looks odd is one shot of Luke on the plank looking down at the Sarlacc

Yeah, that and the dip in quality at Lapti Nek are the only things that jump out at me, otherwise everything's really stellar. That said, I thought the same thing about Star Wars and Empire 1.0 and then was totally blown away by the later versions.

Right on! I just watched SW 2.5 in Mono and it really took me back in more ways than one. We as fans are in debt to Harmy and the others who helped make this possible. I have a huge SW collection but I bet I cherish the Despecialized Editions the most.

I'd also like to thank Harmy for these Despecialized Editions. It's actually changed how I feel about Star Wars as I was one who struggled to watch the originals after the prequels and altered special editions came out. I had lost the passion for my favorite movies as a child, but being able to see them again in high quality without the horrible changes has renewed my love for these films. It's all I ever wanted.

THANK YOU HARMY!!!

Also, (I know shameless self promotion), but I actually talked about them on my podcast last week for a segment after discovering them. I wanted to encourage other jaded, cynical Star Wars fans that there is a way to get back to where we were.

The despecialized talk starts at  49:00 minutes in if you're interested.

I can't wait for version 2.0, just don't forget about the blue lightning bolts!  I hate the special edition purple.

I think bolts have become purple because of the reddish 2004's color grading (in fact they were blue in '97), so no doubt he has already fixed that :D

JEDIT: It seems they were purple from the beginning. If anything, they got even more purple :D

I could have sworn the original lightning was completely blue in coloring, I do remember that very clearly from my old VHS tape that I bought in 1995.  When I saw the special edition version of Return Of The Jedi in theaters in 1997 the purple lightning caught my attention immediately because it was a change and I remember spotting anything that looked new very easily since I'd seen these movies so many times before, and that was actually exciting at the time.  I'll have to go back and check that old tape and see what that color looks like.  Hopefully it still plays because I wore it out in the 90s from overuse!
