Star Wars 97SE in HD using super resolution & more — Page 3

'04 looks like CG crap to me. The '97 one ALMOST looks like a puppet and reminds me more of the ROTJ Jabba.

Edit: Wow, sorry negative1. I think we posted at the same time. Anyway, these shots are looking great. I personally kinda love these colors to be honest, feels authentic.

Those from your 35mm scan, Negative One? The colours look fantastic.

We have not announced anything regarding the 97 SE versions yet. But we plan on preserving those also when the time comes.

Here are some more scenes from the SE with CGI (and some of the new ones):

Oh I meant your '77 theatrical version.

Wow, those frames make me more excited for a 97 preservation than I thought possible.  Looking forward to the possibility of that down the line, -1 team.

Oh hold up, I'm confused: the Artoo and Rebel soldier shots at the top of the page---are those from your theatrical '77 scan in progress or from the '97 SE material you have?

Looks fantastic either way.

All these frames are from the 97 SE, (which we have not announced yet).

Anyway, I would almost prefer a raw scan of the print like that to a color corrected one. These colors look just too darn good for me :-)

@team_negative1: thanks for the screenshots!

Here you are the comparison between yours, and GKar+TB enhanced - no color regrading, reframed to match, more or less, the film frames

Me too. The colors of the raw scan look spectacular.

@ Laserdisc Master

Looking good! You're upscales come surprisingly close to the 35 mm, despite the fact that the source has a 5x lower resolution.

The comparisons are good! While the resolution is of course, no where near the 35mm, it does allow for minor detail comparisons. Such as as the comparisons of frame 22309. In the LaserDisc upscale, you can see the individual sand 'ripples', whereas the 35mm scan, it is somewhat obscured. That may be because the color is quite faded, and it took those details with it. But as of now, there are areas where MagicUP actually does have more detail!

Although I suspect that once color correction begins on the 35mm scan, a lot more detail will be restored.

Those '97 SE scans look beautiful!

It's funny, when I see '97 Jabba the nostalgia of seeing Star Wars for the first time allows me to see past its gaping flaws. When I was seven, CGI Jabba was real, dammit. When I look at the '04 version I just see a digital effect, albeit a much improved one.

(And '04 Jabba is actually a damn good effect, just visually inconsistent with everything else in that movie.)

I totally agree with you :D

That's good. I'd love to see the actual theatrical versions, the REAL ones, but I can't dismiss the '97 SE, as this is the version I grew up with.

Those 97 screenshots almost don't even look like they need color correction, imo!

Better dynamic range and apparently more detail (like in R2's scratches), but it seems there's a bit of sharpening's artifacts.

Just noticed something in http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/126123: -1's scans' colors are temporary, but the escape pod is definetely blue here, while looks greyish in yours, which means...? Could it be was a last minute fix by retiming for the broadcastings? In comparison, in http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/126124 looks like there's more blue in yours.

Indeed, film frames are beautiful, and colors look good "as is", even if need some adjustement; I also noted that sometimes few details are lost in the film, while present in the DVD, and vice versa...

But if you think the MagicSR (yes, I used the Super Resolution for the GKar+TB combination) is made using broadcast SDTV, the result is outstanding... the worst offending thing, to me, is not color, or detail, but the fact that it's heavily cropped, while film has, obviously, the whole picture intact!

Hope to see the film preservation ASAP - even if 97SE is not my preferred version, I want to see it "on film" as well!

I tend to be skeptical of people who say they'd watch a raw scan, but those '97 SE shots are making me reconsider my stance.  Had to come back today just to get another look, haha.

@Andrea: as John Doom says, there are some sharpening artifacts present in your latest comparison.  While unavoidable in an upscale to a certain extent, look at the haloing around R2.  Just keep that in mind while you continue experimenting.
