And I agree that without a new version on the horizon, continually bitching about colors on SW is now bordering on beating a dead horse.  Everyone should focus their opinions on Jedi right now and after that on Empire when V2.5 (with even less GOUT and correct credits) comes into focus.  Never your minds on where we are, what we are doing, you are all reckless.

I agree. Color looks great, and miles better than the official alternative, even if there is room for improvement.

Mildly off topic, but to include more positive notes about color: Watched ESB 2.0 again last night and in my meaningless opinion, the color is absolutely wonderful throughout.

Congrats on making the jump to projecting, Harmy.  Which model projector did you choose and what did you go with on the rest of your setup (receiver, screen, etc.)?

I have a Benq W1070+ DLP. It's decent but I can't wait for 4K projectors to become more affordable - I have a 10ft roll-down Elite Screens screen (135" diameter) and my viewing distance is about two meters (6.5ft) and I feel like the screen could still be bigger (I'm one of those people who prefer to sit in the first few rows in the cinema) but at this size and distance, the pixel grid is pretty noticeable on a 1080p projector (as it is in cinemas that still have 2K projectors).

I bought 5 pairs of 3D glasses with it and the 3D is fantastic - way better than on my 58" 4K Panasonic TV - no ghosting whatsoever and the colors are also really good after some adjustment.

As for sound, I have a Panasonic 5.1 BD Home Theater system - nothing fancy but it has a 3D BD player and the sound is really good (at least to my ears).

I play most movies from my computer hooked to the projector via HDMI for picture and to the Panasonic HT system's audio receiver via toslink. I could also use my BD player but this is actually simpler and produces better quality image, so I usually only use the BD player for stuff that requires menu (like extras) or for 3D BDs.

What software are you using to play your movies Harmy?

MPC HC with Mad VR. I use Any DVD HD to decode BDs, so that I can play them in MPC as well and the results are far better than when I play them in my BD player - less banding, less visible compression artiifacts, more detail, plus FFDshow allows me to add grain, which helps a lot with hiding DNR and compression artifacts.

Off of that one dark shot of the projector, I was actually leaning toward guessing the W1070.  Been running one of those myself for a few years now (well, I don't know what the + version is, but still probably pretty close).  Watched the DeEd with it quite a few times, and I certainly can't complain about that.  Likely going to do it again this evening, to celebrate the day properly.

...how would you feel about making one of those babies for the guy who made the Despecialized Edition? I'd be happy to cover the cost of postage and material. Pretty please...

I would also love me one of these:
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Blu-Ray-and-other-HD-box-size-STAR-WARS-covers/post/745885/#TopicPost745885

so I'd like to extend the same request to spheretronic or anyone willing to make that from the files he provided.

It would make me all giddy to have these on my shelf and even more so if I knew and could tell people that they were made by fans of Despecialized!

I'd also be happy to give you some kind of special credit in future DeEd projects.

Harmy... your box set is finally finished. I'll try to ship it to you this week. Let me know when you get it and what you think.

And of course, any credit in one of your projects would be amazing (I could maybe even design something special for one!).

Best,

Ron

Does your receiver support video pass-through via HDMI? In that case it would be preferrable to connect your PC to the receiver via HDMI and transmit the audio too in lossless format. TOS Link only supports 2 channels of lossless audio (PCM) or lossy 5.1 DTS / Dolby Digital. The projector gets the video via HDMI from the receiver then.

I saw this posted on io9.com & thought it would be good to copy here. Kudos Harmy.

This weekend I took my 5 year old son to a screening of the despecialized versions in a small movie theater for a private party. Lightsabers were handed out to everyone, food was served from the Star Wars cookbook and Star War toys were at the front of the theatre for kids to play with them if they wanted. Everyone there had seen the movie a 100 times with the exception of the children. People cheered, screamed, hollered and high-fived, they waved lightsabers when they were in play on screen and made blaster noises throughout the movie. There were people in costumes and costumes to try on at a photobooth. It was wonderful.

My son, who has seen two movies in actual theaters, turned to me when it was over with a gleam in his eye and asked “daddy, how come all movies aren’t like this?” And then, a smile broadening on his face “I think I want to watch these ones again a few more times.”

I don’t have a time machine to take him back to 1977 when I first saw Star Wars and experienced a communal epiphany with a group of strangers. But this, for sure, was the next best thing.

That's the affect authentic legitimate Star Wars has on people, and it's great to hear about a new fan getting to experience the true Star Wars for the first time. :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

@Brumous

Could you give us the io9 link as well? Couldn't find it through search engines.

Whoever had the idea of a private theater Despecialized party with the kids, toys, photo booth etc. was brilliant.

I'm planning one of my own. That's why I was so interested. I'm researching it at the moment. Seemingly, as long as it's a private function and I don't charge in, we can screen whatever we want. I am a but nervous about it though.

Thanks for the link

I wanted to download these movies and I am completely tech-illiterate.

When I download them from public torrent sites, can I just do it without any protection or IP masking?

It's not really so much about that and just more about standard morality.  You really should own either the blu ray or digital versions of the film.

Watching Despecialized last night, I noticed that during the Alderaan asteroids/tractor beam sequence Luke and Han have orange blotches on their faces. I wondered if it was a colour correction thing but then I considered it was makeup. Anyone have an idea?

 It's probably makeup.
