With this V2 release of The Phantom Menace, as well as adding grain to make the film look more filmic, I have also regraded the film to remove the constant blanket red tint found throughout the whole blu-ray.
The overly red sunburnt fleshtones of the blu-ray have also been adjusted to closely match the more natural fleshtones of the Star Wars Semi-Specialised Edition V2.2, making this film more visually appealing and consistant with the latest Semi-Specialised Editions. Like the Star Wars Original Trilogy, The Phantom Menace was also shot on film, as will be the new Star Wars films coming out thankfully. Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were both shot on digital.
Like many, I was unhappy with the all the DNR (Digital noise Reduction) that the official blu-ray of The Phantom Menace had that scrubbed away lot of the detail, making everybody in the film look very waxy, so I decided to try and see if I could reverse the DNR by adding some film grain myself.
By adding some fine grain to the transfer, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail that I was able to recover that I hadn't even noticed before on the blu-ray. All this detail that had been hiding beneath the DNR had just come right up to the surface, making this new regrained version of The Phantom Menace look more filmic, as it should do because it was shot on film, but more detailed as well, all considered, a big improvement over the original blu-ray transfer IMHO, especially when viewed in motion.
I hope you like what i've done here. Please post back here with your thoughts or even a simple thanks, it would be really appreciated :)
